What does the Bible say about why people can't believe?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that people cannot believe because they are spiritually dead and blind to the truth without God's revelation.

The key reason people can't believe the truth in God's Word is due to their spiritual condition. As the scripture states, they are dead in trespasses and sins, incapable of recognizing or accepting the truth without divine intervention. John 12:39 illustrates this point, saying, 'Therefore they could not believe because that Isaiah said again, He hath blinded their eyes and hardened their heart.' This blinding and hardening is an act of God, indicating that belief requires God's sovereign grace to be revealed to the sinner. Thus, without the grace of God opening their eyes, they remain unable to see and accept the truth of salvation through Christ.
