Why are Old Testament sacrifices considered ineffective?

Answered in 1 source

Old Testament sacrifices were ineffective because they could not take away sin or attain true righteousness.

The Old Testament sacrifices were instituted to point to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, but they could not actually remove sin or make the worshippers perfect in the sight of God. Hebrews 10:1-4 explicitly states that these sacrifices were merely shadows of the good things to come and were repeated because they could not provide true atonement. Instead, they reminded worshippers of their sins. The inability of these sacrifices to cleanse the conscience and achieve righteousness signifies the need for a better offering – that of Christ, whose one sacrifice atones for sin once and for all, offering believers complete redemption.
