Why do many people today claim to be religious but lack true understanding of God?

The phenomenon of religious zeal without true understanding is pervasive today, echoing the issue faced by the Jews in the time of the Apostles. As discussed in Romans 10:2, they possessed a zeal for God, yet it was 'not according to knowledge.' This illustrates how many may engage in spiritual practices and outward displays of faith while being disconnected from the true knowledge of God. This disconnect arises from a church culture that often prioritizes emotional experiences over sound doctrinal teaching, ultimately leading to a generation that honors God with their lips but whose hearts are far from Him (Isaiah 29:13).
