Why is God's justice important for forgiveness?

Answered in 2 sources

God's justice is crucial for forgiveness because true forgiveness cannot compromise His holiness; it requires that justice be satisfied.

In understanding the relationship between God's justice and forgiveness, one must recognize that God's holiness demands that sin must be punished. Therefore, God cannot forgive sin at the expense of His justice. The justice of God is perfectly displayed in the person of Jesus Christ, who satisfied this justice on behalf of sinners by becoming the propitiation for sins (1 John 2:2). The reconciliation of mercy and justice is at the heart of Christian doctrine, wherein Jesus' sacrifice allows both aspects of God's nature to coexist harmoniously. Thus, forgiveness is not cheap; it is purchased at a high price — the blood of Christ — making it accessible to those who recognize their need for grace.
