What does the Bible say about God's sovereignty in suffering?

Answered in 17 sources

The Bible affirms that God is sovereign over all circumstances, including suffering, and works everything for the good of those who love Him.

Scripture teaches that God has complete authority over every aspect of our lives, including times of trial and sorrow. Romans 8:28 assures us that 'God causes all things to work together for good, to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.' This reveals that even in our deepest struggles, God is orchestrating events for our ultimate benefit and His glory. The example of the woman in 2 Kings 4 illustrates this truth—despite her tragic loss, she affirmed the goodness of God's plan by saying, 'It is well.'

Moreover, through suffering, God may bring about growth, comfort, and deeper reliance on His grace. Our understanding is limited, but we can trust in God's wisdom and love, knowing that He allows trials for reasons we may not fully comprehend. The assurance that 'He has done all things well' (Mark 7:37) provides hope and strength as we navigate life’s hardships.
