What does the Bible say about sin and affliction?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that afflictions are meant to remind us of the seriousness of sin and are often light compared to what sin deserves.

The Scriptures reveal that afflictions can serve as a divine chastening to remind us of the consequences of sin. In John 5:14, Jesus warns, 'Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you,' indicating that our sins have serious implications. Afflictions, though difficult, are designed to lead us back to God and help us recognize the true source of sorrow—sin itself. These trials, therefore, should be viewed in the light of God’s mercy, as they prevent us from greater harm if we heed the lessons they impart.
