Why is self-justification a problem for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Self-justification prevents true reliance on Christ and His grace for salvation.

Self-justification is a significant barrier to salvation because it breeds a false sense of security based on one’s own works rather than faith in Christ. The rich young ruler exemplified this as he sought to justify himself by claiming adherence to the law (Matthew 19:20). However, Jesus pointed to the inadequacy of such self-righteousness and the necessity of faith in Him. Romans 3:20 teaches that by works of the law, no human being will be justified in God's sight, underscoring the futility of trying to earn God's favor through personal merit. Christians must ground their assurance and acceptance solely in Christ's righteousness.
