What does the Bible say about setting our affections on things above?

Colossians 3:2 instructs us to set our affections on things above, emphasizing the need for divine assistance to elevate our hearts.

In Colossians 3:2, the Apostle Paul urges believers to set their affections on things above, not on earthly matters. This instruction highlights our inability to elevate our own affections without the Lord's intervention. It is through the manifestation of God's love and beauty in our hearts that we can develop a longing for spiritual things. We are drawn to Christ as He reveals Himself to us, captivating our hearts and shifting our desires toward heavenly blessings.

The 'things above' refer to all blessings that exist in Christ, including pardon, peace, righteousness, and joy. These are not merely abstract concepts but tangible experiences of God's grace that transform our affections. As we behold Christ’s glory through faith, the Spirit deepens our love for Him, making everything associated with Him deeply precious. The divine truth presented to our souls—through promises, assurances, and the revelation of Christ—serves as the means by which our affections are lifted from earthly distractions to heavenly delights.

Colossians 3:2

How do we know that our affections can be directed towards Christ?

Our affections can be directed towards Christ when He reveals His beauty and blessedness to our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

The direction of our affections toward Christ is not a self-generated effort but a work of divine grace. The Lord draws our hearts through His loving manifestations, such as a gentle word, a sweet promise, or a glorious truth. This captivating of the heart by Christ's love allows us to instinctively channel our affections toward Him. It is essential to recognize that these affections do not arise from obligation, but from a heartfelt attraction to the beauty of Christ as revealed to us by the Holy Spirit.

In the process of spiritual transformation, when we see Christ as the source of every blessing, our natural inclinations begin to shift away from the earthly and toward the divine. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in this process by taking the things of Christ and applying them to our souls. This divine revelation births an affection that finds its rightful place in Christ, highlighting the truth that as our understanding of Him deepens, so too does our love for Him.

Colossians 3:2

Why is it important for Christians to set their affections on things above?

Setting affections on things above is vital for Christians as it aligns our hearts with God's purposes and the blessings found in Christ.

For Christians, setting affections on things above is of utmost importance because it aligns our hearts with God's will and purpose for our lives. The act of focusing on heavenly things helps us resist the temptations of the world and cultivates a spirit of gratitude and contentment in Christ. As believers, our identity and worth are rooted in our relationship with Christ, and by centering our affections on Him, we acknowledge His supremacy and the unshakeable nature of our hope.

Moreover, when our affections are set on Christ and the blessings stored up in Him—such as grace, peace, and righteousness—we are empowered to live out our faith with joy and effectiveness. These divine realities motivate our actions, enabling us to endure trials and temptations with the assurance of Christ's love and the anticipation of our eternal home. In this way, setting our affections on things above becomes not only an expression of love for Christ but also a vital aspect of our Christian witness to the world around us.

Colossians 3:2

"Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth."

— Colossians 3:2

How are we to set our affections on things above? Can we do this great work of ourselves? No; it is only the Lord himself manifesting his beauty and blessedness to our soul, and letting down the golden cord of his love into our breast, that draws up our affections, and fixes them where he sits at God's right hand. In order to do this, he captivates the heart by some look of love, some word of his grace, some sweet promise, or some divine truth spiritually applied. When he thus captivates the soul, and draws it up, then the affections flow unto him as the source and fountain of all blessings. We are not flogged into loving him, but drawn by love into love. Love cannot be bought or sold; it is an inward affection that flows naturally and necessarily towards its object and all connected with it; and thus, as love flows out to Jesus, the affections instinctively and necessarily set themselves "on things above, and not on things on the earth."

But what are these "things above?" They are all things stored up in Christ, that breathe of Christ, and come out of Christ. Pardon, peace, righteousness, love, "joy unspeakable and full of glory," with strength against sin, victory over death and hell; power against besetting lusts and temptations; in a word, every blessing with which God has blessed his people "in heavenly places in Christ;" these are the "things above," that the soul has to set its affections upon. But we must have some view by faith of the Person of Christ, the eternal Son of the eternal Father; he must be revealed to our soul by the power of God before we can see his beauty and blessedness, and so fall in love with him as "the chief among ten thousand and altogether lovely." Then everything that speaks of Christ, savors of Christ, and breathes of Christ, becomes inexpressibly sweet and precious.

This is "the golden oil" that flows into the heart; this is the sweet-smelling myrrh which drops upon the handles of the lock; this is "the aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces;" this is "the love which many waters cannot quench, nor the floods drown;" and by an experience of this the affections become set on things above.

And in no other way can they be lifted up from earth to heaven. We cannot control our affections; they will run out of their own accord. If then our affections be earthly, they will run towards the earth; if they be carnal and sensual, they will flow toward carnal and sensual objects. But when the Lord Jesus Christ, by some manifestation of his glory and blessedness, or the Holy Spirit, by taking of the things of Christ and revealing them to the soul, sets him before our eyes as the only object worthy of and claiming every affection of our heart, then the affections flow out, I was going to say naturally, but most certainly spiritually towards him; and when this is the case, the affections are set on things above.
