How do we know that true wisdom is lacking in the presence of envy?

Answered in 1 source

True wisdom is marked by humility and love, whereas envy and ambition reveal a lack of grace and true understanding.

James teaches that wherever there is bitter envy and selfish ambition, there is a significant absence of true wisdom. Wisdom, as defined by scripture, results in peace, gentleness, and a willingness to yield (James 3:17). In contrast, when envy and ambition surface, they indicate not only a lack of godly wisdom but also a rejection of the grace that should characterize believers. The apostle emphasizes that envious hearts breed conflict and strife, drawing attention to the heart's condition as the source of these evils.

The implications of this reality are profound, as those who claim wisdom yet harbor such resentments are, in essence, living a contradiction. As noted in 1 John 3:15, anyone who hates their brother is a murderer, revealing the severity of envy’s nature. Hence, true wisdom opposes these negative traits by leading individuals towards self-examination, repentance, and ultimately, a recommitment to Christ’s teachings of love.
