What does the Bible say about affliction and sin?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible teaches that while affliction is often due to sin, for believers, it serves a different purpose—ultimately for their good and God's glory.

In Job 5, Eliphaz argues that affliction is a mark of sin, targeting Job as a hypocrite. However, it is critical to understand that God's dealings with His children are distinct. While it's true that man's sin results in ruin, as stated in the passage, the believer's afflictions are appointed with a divine purpose: to grow them spiritually and to glorify God. Unlike the wicked for whom trouble arises without hope, believers are assured that their trials are orchestrated by a loving Father who works all things for their ultimate good (Romans 8:28).
