Well, good morning again. In Job chapter 9, Job asked this
simple question, how should man be just with God? How can a holy God be just in
punishing every sin and justify sinners at the same time. How
can it be? I hope we leave here this morning,
this afternoon with an answer to that question in our hearts,
a clear answer. He went on in the next verse
to say, if he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one
in a thousand. If man is going to contend with
God, God's questions are unanswerable. by man. Let's stand together. Brother
Burt is going to come and lead us in the hymn on the back of your
bulletin. Brethren, let us join to bless
Christ our peace and righteousness. Let our praise to Him be given,
high at God's right hand in heaven, high at God's right hand in heaven. Son of God to Thee we bow, Thou
our Lord and only Thou. Thou the woman's promise see,
Thou who didst for sinners bleed, Thou who didst for sinners bleed. ? We, we praise our free and king
? ? Worthy is thy name of praise ? ? Full of glory, full of grace
? ? Full of glory, full of grace ? Thou hath the glad tidings brought
Of salvation fully wrought Wrought, O Lord, of Almighty Wrought to
set Thy people free Wrought to set Thy people free Thee, our
Lord, would we adore, serve and follow more and more. Praise and bless Thy matchless
love, till we join Thy saints above, till we join Thy saints
above. Be seated, please. Good morning. Our scripture reading,
our call to worship is in Psalm 121. Psalm 121. I will lift up my eyes unto the
hills. From whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the Lord,
which made heaven and earth. And this is the only place where
the believer finds help. It's on the Lord Jesus Christ,
because we know that the Lord Jesus Christ was the creator
of heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to
be moved. He that keepeth thee will not
slumber. This is our security. Our security
is not in ourselves. Our security is in Him and what
He does and how He keeps us. He's not going to suffer our
foot to be moved. And He that keepeth will not
slumber. He does not sleep. He's alert. He's the Lord. Behold,
He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber no sleep again
repeating that he doesn't sleep it's like a night watchman night
watchman watchman could possibly fall asleep because he's human
yeah he may be tired but not our lord our lord keeps watch
on israel means us the believers he does not slumber sleep the
lord is thy keeper the lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. He keeps us, and I believe that
he also is the shade upon the right hand. It's a reference
to his righteousness. He is our righteousness, the
Lord Jesus Christ. The sun shall not smite thee
by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee
from all evil. The Lord is always preserving
from any evil. All that happens to the child
of God is for his glory and for our good as well. There's no
evil that happens. We might see it temporarily if
we take our eyes off of Christ, but there's no evil can come
upon the child of God. He shall preserve thy soul. Now,
this is the most important and the most important thing that
we need is for him to preserve our soul, our eternal soul is
all in Christ. The Lord, notice how everything
here is done by the Lord and not by us. The Lord shall preserve
by going out and by coming in from this time forth and from
evermore for our destination forever. And our destination
is to be with Christ. That's what we want. Father God,
we come before you to thank you, Lord. We come before you in the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving you praise and giving
you honor, Father. Thank you that we have a place,
Lord, that we can come and hear about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you for what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us and keeps
doing for us and will do forevermore, Father. Thank you for the Lord
Jesus Christ overall. pray for Greg and he's preaching
next hour. Father, may he be full of the
Holy Spirit. May he preach Christ clearly
and we also definitely need your Holy Spirit to teach us. We need
your Holy Spirit to fill us and to be able to have ears that
hear all about the Lord Jesus Christ and what he means and
what he has done. Father, we pray this for all
the other churches that preach the gospel as well. We remind
you also that in Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Would you turn to number 296
in the blue hardback candles, number 296, All the Way My Savior
Leads For. Would you please stand? All the way my Savior leads me,
what have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy,
who through life has been my guide? Heav'nly peace, divinest
comfort, here by faith in Him to dwell. For I know what e'er
befalls me, Jesus doeth all things well. For I know what e'er befalls
me, Jesus doeth all things well. All the way my Savior leads me,
cheers each winding path I tread, gives me grace for every trial,
feeds me with the living bread. Though my weary steps may falter,
And my soul a thirst may be, Gushing from the rock before
me, Lord, a spring of joy I seek. Gushing from the rock before
me, Lord, a spring of joy I seek. All the way my Savior leads me,
O the fullness of His love. Perfect rest to me it promised
in my Father's house above. And my spirit clothed immortal,
wing its flight to realms of day. This my song through endless
ages, Jesus led me all the way. This my song through endless
ages, Jesus led me all the way. Please seated, please. Would you open your Bibles again
to Mark, please, Mark chapter five. I've titled this message, Deluded
or Delivered. Deluded or Delivered. And my hope is that we will each
be able to identify ourselves with this poor man who was possessed
of a legion of devils and that we will find our hope in the
Lord Jesus Christ who delivers those who are by nature deluded. Chapter 5 verse 1, and they came
over unto the other side of the sea into the city of the Gadarenes. Now I looked up that word Gadarenes
and this really applies to the previous hour more so than now.
But the word Gadarenes translated means reward at the end. Reward at the end. The Lord took
them over safely to the other side. to the Gadarenes. What did he find there? And when
he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out
of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling
among the tombs, and no man could bind him, no, not with chains. because that he had been often
bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked
asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces, neither could
any man tame him. He was a threat to society, and
they had banished him to the graveyard and were doing their
best to try to control his rantings and ravings to keep themselves
safe from him. And always, night and day, He
was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself
with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off,
he ran and worshiped him and cried with a loud voice and said,
what have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou son of the most high
God? I adjure thee by God that thou
torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out
of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, not for his
own. When the Lord asks questions, it's never for information for
himself, but for those that are around him. He asked him, he
said, what is your name? And the demon spoke out of the
man and said, my name is Legion, for we are many. Now, Roman Legion
was 6,100 foot soldiers and 175 horsemen. So it's a large army and this
demon is calling himself legion. And he besought him much that
he would not send them out of the country. Now they were there
nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding and all
the devils besought him saying, send us into the swine that we
may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them
leave and the unclean spirits went out. and entered into the
swine. And the herd ran violently down
a steep place into the sea that for there were about 2000 and
they were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled
and told it in the city and in the country. And they went out
to see what it was that was done. And they came to Jesus and see
him that was possessed with the devil and had legions sitting
and clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. What a contrast. Here we find
this man sitting. When you rest in your sitting,
he was clothed now, had the nakedness of his body covered in the righteousness
of Christ, and he was in his right mind. He was no longer
deluded. He thought clearly about the
truth. What a picture of conversion.
It's what the Lord does to a deluded sinner. He sits him down, enables
him to rest in Christ. He covers his nakedness with
the robe of righteousness that he might find acceptance with
God. And then he changes his mind. That's what repentance is. Repentance
is a changed mind. We come into this world with
a perverted mind, a deluded mind, a confused mind. Everything we
think about God is contrary to what the truth is. And God has
to give us a new mind, the mind of Christ. That's what He does
for this man. In verse 16, And they that saw it told them how
it befell to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning
the swine, and they began to pray him to depart out of their
coast. We'd rather deal with this deluded
demoniac than deal with God. And when he was come into the
ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that
he might be with him. How be it Jesus suffered him
not, but said unto him, Go home to thy friends and tell them
how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion
on thee. meets with his people and speaks
to their hearts. And God's people long for that
day when he'll take them home and they'll see him in all of
his glory. The destination of their journey
is their goal in life. And yet the Lord says, no, you
can't come with me now. You're going to stay here. You're going to be my witness. Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria,
and the other most parts of the world, all your friends and family
members what great things the Lord hath done for you and what
great compassion he has had on you. And the scripture says that
he departed and began to publish in Decapolis. Now Decapolis is
10 cities. Decapolis was an area of 10 separate. So this man traveled from city
to city and told them, published to them. That's the word, the word published
there is the word to preach. When we publish what great things
the Lord hath done, we're not debating with people, we're not
asking people for their opinion, we're declaring unto them, we're
publishing unto them what God has done. In all of Decapolis,
in all men, did marvel. And by way of introduction I
want to say that though we may jest, make light of, joke sometimes
about being crazy or losing our minds, the truth is that mental
illness is a serious and heartbreaking problem for those who have to
deal with it. And I hope that This portion
of God's word will give a message of hope to those who deal within
their family and themselves with the problem of mental illness.
The second thing I want to say is to remind every one of us,
every single one of us live on the edge of insanity. If you don't know that about
yourself, you don't know yourself very well. Just think how easy
it is for you to lose perspective when things don't go right. How
quickly you can get angry. How quickly you can get in a
fog. And all the Lord would have to
do is remove his restraining grace. Maybe disrupt the chemicals
in your body just a little bit or give you a traumatic experience
that would tilt you and tip you over the edge. We're all there,
aren't we? We're all there. Lord, keep us. That having been said, this poor, possessed man who is obviously
out of his mind represents spiritually every single one of us. Regardless
of our mental stability, he represents our condition spiritually. And that's where I want you and
I to see ourselves identifying with this man. We all, by nature,
come into this world held captive by Satan and his lies. That's how we come into this
world. Every thought that we have about God by nature is just
the opposite of what it is, of what the truth is. The Lord Jesus
Christ, when talking, remember when he asked the disciples,
whom do you say that I am? And Peter said, thou art the
Christ, the son of the living God. Blessed art thou, Simon
Barjona, flesh and blood didn't reveal the son to you. You didn't
come to this conclusion on your own. You didn't study this out.
You didn't figure this out because of your intellect or because
of your sharp mind. No, my father which is in heaven
has made this known unto you. And upon this rock, I shall build
my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Now, what'd the Lord mean when
he said the gates of hell shall not prevail against it? That
means the power of God is going to break down the gates of hell
and go into the very pit of Satan's captivity and lead, as the Lord
said, those who are captive, captive. He came to lead captivity
captive. Were you ever held captive by
Satan? Darkness? kingdom of darkness. That's what the Lord said. I
came to translate them out of the kingdom of darkness into
the kingdom of light. So I've never been under control
of Satan. I hear some people say that. And I would say with
a broken heart, I fear you still are and you don't know it. Every child of God that's been
given eyes to see knows that there was a time when they were
held captive. They could not believe, they
could not see, they could not come. Turn to me to the book of Ephesians,
please. Chapter two, Ephesians chapter
two. Verse 1, and you hath he quickened
made alive. Who did the quickening? He did
it. And you hath he quickened who were dead in your trespasses
and sins. You and I come into this world
speaking lies from the womb. spiritually dead. Unable to save ourselves, unable
to discover any truth about God. Why? Because we are held captive. Our minds and hearts are by nature
held captive by Satan and if the Lord Jesus Christ doesn't
do for us what he did for this demoniac, we'll die in that condition. Wherein, in times past, you walked
according to the course of this world, according to the prince
of the power of the air." Who is the prince of the power of
the air? That's Satan. You walked according to him. Which way the wind blew. You
thought, well, there's a new way. There's a different way.
There's a better way. And you just followed The wind,
you know, however, whatever you thought. The spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience. Now that disobedience means to
not believe. Among whom also we all had our
conversation in times past, in the lost of our flesh, fulfilling
the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and we're by nature,
we were by nature just like the children of wrath. That's what
the meaning there is. See, God's elect have been loved,
they're loved with an everlasting love. They're chosen by God.
They're going, the Lord's going to open their eyes. He's going
to save them. But here he's saying, you were just like, there was
no difference. Who made you to differ? The Lord made a distinction
when Moses went down into Egypt. The Lord made a distinction between
the Israelites and the Egyptians. And He brought the Israelites
out and killed the Egyptians. God made a distinction. So had
the Lord not made a distinction, you'd be just like the children
of wrath, even as others. But God, but God who is rich
in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us even when we were
dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, for
by grace are you saved, and hath raised us up together." When
were we raised? When Christ was raised. When
the Lord Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, all those for
whom God put in Christ were raised with him. Paul said that I might
know the power of his resurrection. raised together with Christ and
made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. We're
God's people right now. In the heavenlies. In Christ. Really there. Really there. Now the word exist is very similar
to the word exit. And it means to stand out of. That's what the word exist means,
to stand out of. Now all the stuff that we say
exists, the physical properties of this world and of our lives,
they stand out of that which is eternal. They stand out of
God. And so in the eternal sense,
And in the spiritual sense, the things that we say exist really
don't exist. The only thing that exists, the
only thing that's real is that which cannot be shaken, the spiritual. God's going to shake everything
that's been made so that those things which have not been made,
that's the reality of it all. That's the reality of it all.
will not be moved. Everything else is going to be
moved. So the Lord says that we came
into this world spiritually dead. We came into this world blind. And the Lord had to do for us what
he did for this demoniac of the gatherings now if i could give a layman's
definition to insanity i would say that insanity is being out
of touch with reality insanity is being completely
out of touch with reality, a person who is delusional, believe the
absurd to be true. There is no darker delusion,
nothing more insane, nothing more out of touch with reality
than to think that you can approach a holy God based on anything
other than the blood of his darling son. That's insanity. That's demon possession. That's
death. That's darkness. And if God doesn't
come and deliver us from that lie, we will die insane. We will die believing a lie. An attempt to atone for your
own sins by your will or by your works or by your wisdom is to
be mentally deranged. And we come into this world with a deranged mind. So, back
to the title of this message, Deranged or Delivered? Deranged or Delivered? Has the Lord delivered you from
that thinking, that thought that you had about yourself and about
God and about how it is that God is pleased to save sinners?
Has He delivered you from that? Has He given to you the mind
of Christ? Now the world thinks that we're
mad. You remember in Acts chapter
26, when Paul was witnessing the gospel to Festus and Festus
listened and listened and listened. And then finally Festus said,
Paul, he said, you are beside yourself. Much learning has made
you mad. Now here's a man who's deranged
calling a man who's been delivered deranged. And Paul said, I'm
not mad. I've spoken to you the truth
in sobriety, in simplicity. I've told you the truth. I'm
not the one that's mad. Now they even thought that about
the Lord Jesus Christ. Turn with me to John chapter
10. verse 14, John chapter 10 verse
14, I am the good shepherd and know my sheep and am known of
mine. As the father knoweth me, even
so I know the father and I lay down my life for the sheep. If you've been told and believed
that Jesus Christ died for everybody, you are deluded. You're deluded. You're insane. You're out of
your mind. You're holding on to something that's not true. And other sheep I have which
are not of this fold, them also I must bring. and they shall
hear my voice. And there shall be one fold and
one shepherd. I must bring them. I'm not gonna
lose one. I know where my sheep are. The
Lord went all the way over to the Gadarenes, that whole boat
trip that we've read about in Mark chapter four and everything
that took place with the, to save one man, one man. And then he gets back in the
ship and goes back. Just like when the disciples wanted to
go around Samaria, I must needs go through Samaria. Why? Because
I've got some lost sheep there. I'm not going to lose one of
my sheep, every single one of them. Therefore, doth my father love
me because I lay down my life that I might take it again. No
man taketh it from me, but I lay it down to myself. Don't feel
sorry for me. Nobody's taking my life from me. I'm laying down
my life willingly. For what? For my sheep? I have
power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This
commandment have I received from my Father. I've got the power
to lay my life. When the Lord Jesus Christ, the
last thing that's said about the Lord on the cross, yes, it
is finished. Father, into thy hands I commend
my spirit. And he gave up the ghost. He gave permission for his spirit
to leave his body. That can only be said about the
Lord. He was controlling every aspect of his death. There was
a division, therefore, again among the Jews, verse 19, verse
20, and many of them said, he hath the devil and is mad. Why hear you him? Now here's
deranged, deluded, demon-possessed men looking at the Son of God
saying, He's mad. Others said, These are not the
words of Him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of
the blind? And it was at Jerusalem, the
Feast of Dedication, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the
temple. in Solomon's porch. Then came
the Jews round about him and said unto him, How long doth
thou make us to doubt if thou be the Christ? Tell us plainly.
And Jesus answered them, I told you and you believe not. There's
a little article in your bulletin this morning, I titled it, Complicated
or Contrary. The gospel is not complicated.
What the Lord Jesus Christ was saying about himself is not complicated. It's not complicated. Salvation
is of the Lord. That's the message of the Gospel. It's contrary to everything that
man believes by nature. Why? Because he's deluded. He's under the domain of Satan. He thinks everything backwards
about God. That's why the Lord said, My
thoughts are not your thoughts. It's just the opposite of what
you think. I told you, but you believe me
not. The works that I do in my father's
name, they bear witness of me. They bear witness of me. See
healing, healing this demoniac in the Gatherings, that bore
witness of who Christ was and what he came to do. because you believe not, because
you are not of my sheep. As I've said unto you, my sheep
hear my voice. They know them. I know them and
they follow me. And I give unto them eternal
life and they shall never perish. Neither shall any man pluck them
out of my hand. My father, which gave them me
is greater than all. And no man is able to pluck them
out of my father's hand. And I and my father are one. Then the Jews took up stones
to stone him. Why? They thought he was mad. And we saw in Mark chapter three,
even the Lord's family, his mother and his brethren said he's beside
himself. He's beside himself. He's lost
touch with reality. Oh no, no. He's the only one that speaks
the truth. Having a sound mind is having
the mind of Christ. Having a sound mind is believing
what God has said. In Isaiah chapter 44 verse 25,
the Lord said that my people are going to see that the diviners
are mad. I'm going to make the diviners
mad. And you see that, don't you,
when you hear someone preaching lies about God, pointing to will
and works and man's wisdom, you see that those diviners are out
of their mind. They're out of their mind. They're
mad. Now, how do I know if I've been delivered? Well, I'm resting in the Lord
Jesus Christ for all the hope of my salvation. I'm not looking
to an experience. What are the three things about
this man? once the Lord delivered him from his delusion. He was
sitting, he was clothed, and he was in his right mind. So he was resting in the finished
work and glorious person of the Lord Jesus Christ for all of
his salvation. He wasn't looking to a decision. He wasn't looking
to an experience. He wasn't looking to his works.
He wasn't looking to his knowledge. He was resting in Christ. His nakedness. When Adam sinned,
God, Adam tried to clothe himself by sewing together fig leaves,
didn't he? Deluded men are doing the same. The whole world. Everybody knows
that there is a God. Everybody knows that that God
is holy. Everybody knows that they've
got a problem with a holy God. And so what are they trying to
do? They're trying to cover their nakedness with the works of their
hands. They're trying to sew together
fig leaves. Not sufficient, is it? They're
bringing God the fruit of their labors, hoping that somehow God's
going to have mercy on them. That's the most delusional thinking
that a person can have, that you can actually bring something
before a holy God that's going to give you acceptance with Him. And so the Lord had to what?
He had to slay a lamb in that garden and take that fleece and
cover the nakedness of Adam. And the third thing, he was in
his right mind. He was thinking clearly. He was no longer cutting
himself. He was no longer running around,
screaming and hollering, breaking the chains. That's religion.
That's religion. That's all it is. You remember
the story that the Lord told about the man who had a demon
in his home and he cast him out? And then he garnished his house.
He, I mean, he dressed it up. He vacuumed the floor. He painted
the walls. He put up new curtains. He put
flowers in the place. He had it all fixed up really
nice. And when the demon came back, he saw that the house was
still empty and he brought back seven demons stronger than himself. Now, what does that story represent?
It represents men and religion. who get in trouble because of
their addictions, because of their lifestyle, and they get
religion, and they decide to repent of those things. I'm going
to change my life, and I'm going to garnish my house with religious
trinkets. I'm going to fix everything up
and make it look nice. And the demons come back seven
times stronger than they were before. You see, the demons of
man-made freewill works religion are much stronger than the demons
of addiction, much stronger. And so whether you got a demon
of addiction or you got a demon of religion, you're still under
the domain of demons. So I don't know if I have a right
mind. There's nothing more deluded than to have any thought that
you're not a sinner. A sinner, a biblical sinner,
a scriptural sinner, a sinner who is incapable of doing anything
that's righteous or acceptable to God, a sinner who is dead
unable to present anything to God that's going to earn him
favor with God. He can't pray a prayer. He can't
make a decision. He can't produce a work. If you
think, if you think that a decision you make or a prayer that you
prayed or a work that you performed or some knowledge you've come
to is going to earn you any favor whatsoever with God, you're not
a sinner. You're deluded. You're believing something that's
not true. You're out of your mind. So what do you believe about
yourself? Have you been delivered from that delusion? Have you
been delivered from that delusion? There's nothing more mad, there's
nothing more insane, there's nothing more deluded than to
think. that God has not sovereignly,
according to his own will and purpose, elected a particular
people in the covenant of grace before the world ever began.
Place them in Christ and love them with an everlasting love.
If you don't believe in a God who elects, it's because you're
insane. It's because you're out of your
mind. It's because you're still under the domain of Satan. I know this is strong language,
but this is what this story is about. This is not about a person
who's way out there in left field with mental illness. This is
about humanity. This is about every single one
of us. There's nothing more deluded
than to think that the Son of God came into this world and
made an offer of salvation to all men, making a sacrifice that
was sufficient to cover the sins of everybody. There's nothing
more deluded than that. Have you been delivered from
that thinking? Are you in your right mind? You see, you're either
deluded or you're delivered. If you've been delivered from
that thinking, then you know that what the Lord Jesus Christ
did on Calvary's cross was not an offer to us, it was an offer
to God. And that he satisfied the demands of God's holy justice
by his precious blood, putting away the sins of his people once
and for all. Are you deluded or are you delivered? Are you in your right mind or
are you still thinking backwards about the things of God. There's nothing more deluded
than to think that God Almighty would make an offer of salvation
to men and that that offer could be resisted. I get to decide. I get to either accept or reject
the offer that God's making. No, those who are in their right
minds know that grace is irresistible, irresistible. When God's, I know
my sheep, they hear my voice, they follow me. When I went to, when he went
to the Gadarenes, what that man do? He ran to him and worshiped
him. What was the force behind that? It is the power of the Lord Jesus
Christ. It is called irresistible grace. When God makes you willing in
the day of His power, you do not have anything to say about
it. You just bow. You just come. You just believe. You cannot believe. Why? Because
it is irresistible. Are you deluded or have you been
delivered? You know what I'm doing. I'm
going through the five points, don't you? And the last point
is perseverance. And perseverance is much more
than one saved always saved. Perseverance means that God has
to keep you because the more you see of His grace, the more
you see of your sin, and you're not getting better. But, oh,
there's so many people that think, well, I'm not, I'm getting better. Not doing things I used to do.
I'm a better person now. And then in religion, there's
a hierarchy of holiness, isn't there? To see who's more holy
than the other person. There's competition to see who's
going to be more holy. What did the Apostle Paul say?
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief. If you think you're getting better,
it's because you're deluded. It's because you're out of your
mind. It's because you don't have the mind of Christ. You're
more dependent upon His grace now than you've ever been in
your whole life. And the more you grow in grace and the knowledge
of Christ, the more dependent you're going to become upon Him. Now, our hearts go out to anybody
suffering with mental illness. Might God give them some deliverance
and some peace. But this man's you and me. Every
one of us. So again, the question is, are
you out of your mind? Are you insane? Are you deluded? Are you demon possessed? Or have
you been delivered? Our merciful Heavenly Father,
we're thankful for your word and we ask now for your Holy
Spirit to do what only you can do. giving us faith to believe
