Chapter 4. And good morning. Genesis chapter 4. And I started
to go ahead to chapter 5, but I want to say a few things at
the close of Genesis chapter 4. A few things that I was looking
at this week, I think it's important to point
them out. Let me see where I want to start reading that. In verse
16. And Cain went out from the presence
of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife and she
conceived in Ber Enoch. And he built a city and called
the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch. And unto
Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begat Mahujal, and Mahujal begat
Methusel, and Methusel begat Lamech. And Lamech took unto
him two wives. The name of the one was Ada,
and the name of the other Zillah. And Ada bared Jabil, He was the
father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. And
his brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all such
as handle the harp and organ. And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain,
an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron. And the sister
of Tubalcain was Naima. And Lamech said unto his wives,
Ada and Zillah, hear my voice, you wives of Lamech, hearken
unto my speech, for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young
man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,
truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. And Adam knew his wife again,
and she bare a son, and called his name Seth. For God says she
hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there
was born a son, and he called his name Enos. Then began men
to call upon the name of the Lord. This is the book of the
generations of Adam. In the day that God created man,
in the likeness of God made he him. Male and female created
he them and blessed them and called their name Adam in the
day when they were created. And Adam lived 130 years and
begat a son in his own likeness after his image and called his
name Seth. I'll end the reading there. Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Our Father, we have come here
this morning before thy presence, desiring to hear a word from
our Father, to be instructed this morning by our Father. Teach us, Lord, teach us. And
we desire this morning, Father, to worship you in spirit and
in truth. Enable us to do so. Enable me
to rightly divide the word of truth. Send your word out in
power to the heart of your children. Arrest our attention this morning,
Father. And we pray for those in the
congregation, Father, who are under trials and heartaches. Father, you know who they are.
We pray for them, pray you would bless, pray you'd give grace.
And Father, I pray for every home here that you would bless. There's nothing like having a
home, Lord, where you dwell. And we pray you'd bless. In Christ's
name we pray, and amen. I didn't want to just leave chapter
four because, you know, I don't want to be guilty of just getting
the meat to the, you know what I'm saying, to just the very
meat of it and then leave the rest of it alone. It's like eating
the dessert and leaving everything else alone. But here, I want
us to see something of Cain and his descendants. And then we'll
end with a comparison between the generation of Adam and the
generation of the Lord Jesus Christ. Cain leaves the presence
of the Lord. And I might add, he leaves the
presence of the Lord willingly. He goes off into the land of
Nod. That means wonder, wonderer. It means unrest. And that described
Cain. He was a man of unrest. You know, it says he went off
and built a city, and I'm sure he lived there. But in his heart,
he was always a wanderer. Always discontent. Always unsettled. I don't know if there's a worse
feeling than being unsettled. You ever just feel just unsettled?
Just can't settle down. And that's explained, and that
describes Cain. He was a wanderer. He was a man
of unrest. He was a man of no peace. This
describes Cain. His heart was never settled.
He had no foundation. Without the Lord Jesus Christ,
we don't have a foundation. I was telling my younger son
about taking his two grandkids. I said, let's talk to him about
them going to services in church, you know, sitting under the gospel.
I said, whether God ever saves them or not, that's God's business. I said, but it will give them
a foundation for life. It'll give them a foundation
that when they go through life, they can have some understanding,
some little bit of an understanding of who's in control, that God's
in control of all of this. And it's not just willy nilly,
it's not just happening. God is bringing all things to
pass. I want them to hear that. I want them to hear that God
is. I want them to hear that God
is sovereign. I want them to hear that God
rules and reigns over everything. Give them some kind of foundation.
Secular education is not gonna give you that foundation that
you need. They can give you an education,
I know that. But not the kind that you and
I need. Not the foundation that we need
is built on God. And Cain never had that. He was
unrest. He was a wanderer. And it says
in verse 17 there, he builds a city and he begins to start
a family, creates a name for himself. He names the city after
his son, Enoch. Remember when Abraham Jacob,
you know when they named places, they didn't name them after their
sons, did they? They named them after their experience
with God. Bethel. Bethel, house of God. When Jacob had named that place
Bethel, house of God, they named places by their experience. Cain
named them after his family. to establish a name for himself. When you read of God's patriarchs,
it always had to do with their connection to Almighty God. Cain
was always about Cain. He sought his own glory from
the beginning. And in verse 18, we see that
more children are born to Cain, which are no better than Cain.
Like begets like. And here's what's sad. Cain had an opportunity. God
said, if you do well, shall you not be accepted? If you bring
the right sacrifice, if you do as I have commanded, shall you
not be accepted? And he refused. He absolutely
refused. And his family suffered for it. His family suffered for it. In
fact, In fact, God cut off the whole lineage, the whole seed
of Cain in the flood. All that Cain produced was drowned
in the flood. We don't read of any of Cain's
offspring entering into true worship. We don't read that at
all. We read nothing of God in Cain's offspring. Nothing. I thought when I was thinking
about that and writing this down, I thought what we do and the
choices we make can affect generations to come. They can. Of our family, it can affect
generations to come. Now verse 19, Lamech takes two
wives. And here we have the first case
of polygamy. This is where it started, right
here. Sin just leads to sin. Polygamy was not, listen, it
was tolerated by God, but not condoned by God. It was not so
from the beginning. but he takes two wives and then
more children are born to that family of Cain. And I want you
to notice in verse 20 and 22, what they produce. And Ada, Bear
Jabal, he was the father of such as dwell in tents and as such
have cattle. He was a cattleman. And his brother's
name was Jubal. He was the father of all such
as handled the harp and the organ. He made musical instruments.
And Zilla, she also bared tubal cane and an instructor of every
artificer in brass and iron. And the sister of tubal cane
was Naima. But this is what they did. When we read of Abraham,
we read of God, Isaac, God, Jacob, God, Cain's descendants, entertainment. That's what it was. It was entertainment. They were cattle farmers, metal workers. All this had to do with the satisfying
of the flesh. Now someone's gonna say, what's
wrong with this? Without God, everything. With
God, nothing. With God, there's nothing wrong.
But without God, all of this is used. It's just used for the
lust of the flesh. That's all it's used for. If
they were here today, I thought about this. If they were here
today, they would be the Microsoft. They would be. They would be
the cell phone companies. They'd be the internet. They'd
be all the inventors. Think over history. Think about
history. How many men or women in history
that's been great inventors of things that you know of, and
I don't know all their lives, but do you know of that believe
the gospel of the grace of God? Now I know God uses men, and
he uses, for the most part, he uses these people to employ his
people. But rarely, but rarely does God
make his people rich in this world. Usually if they're rich, they
were rich before God saved them. But when you read of Cain and
his descendants, You read of their entertainments, their works. You never read of God. That's the point, you never read
of God Almighty. God Almighty is totally absent.
He's absent from them. It's evident that Cain never
taught his children about worship. And if he did, whatever it was,
I assure you this, it was wrong. And that's why it's not mentioned.
And then we come to the second killing, second murder in the
scriptures. And I want you to listen how
Lamech boasts about killing a young man for striking him. And that's,
in another translation, this young man that he kills He takes
his life. He kills him because this young
man struck him. He may have hit him. Whatever
it was, he says he killed him for striking him. And Lamech
said to his wives, Ada and Zillah, hear my voice. And listen, there
is so much arrogance dripping off of this right here. There
is so much arrogance going on right here. And he's boasting,
he's popping his suspenders. That's what he's doing. This
old boy is popping his suspenders. He said, I got something to tell
you. Hear my voice, wives, listen to me. You wives of Lamech, you're
so blessed to be my wives, you wives of Lamech. Hearken to my
speech. I've slain a man to my wounding
and a young man to my hurt. And the translation is, I have
killed a man for striking me, a young man. And he's boasting about it. If Cain be avenged sevenfold,
in other words, God said, if anybody touches Cain, I'll avenge
him sevenfold. He said, well, if that's so, then if anybody touches me, then
I'll be avenged times 74. He said, I'm more righteous in
what I did than what Cain did. He boasts about not only killing
the young man for striking him, but that no one could touch him. No one could touch me. He sure misunderstood God's curse
on Cain, didn't he? He sure misunderstood that. He
justifies himself in his sin. And that's what all men and women
do apart from Christ. They justify themselves in their
sins. They have a just reason for why
they do what they do. But what I see here is this. No fear of God. No fear of God
whatsoever. Not even a hint of fear. Not even a hint of fear. But all is not lost. All is not
lost. It says in verse 26, and Adam
knew Eve, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth, appointed,
his name means appointed. God has appointed me another
seed, another child to take the place of Abel, whom Cain slew. Satan tried to destroy the promise
that God gave of the seed of the woman. He'd been trying to
destroy that since it was given 6,000 years ago. But God continues the line through
which Jesus Christ will come through Seth. And he's gonna
wipe out this lineage of Cain in the flood. God's gonna continue his promise
of the seed of the woman. Brother, we can't stop the purpose
of God. Nobody can stop the purpose of
God. Whatever God has purposed, that will he do. That will he
do. God promised that the seed of
the woman is gonna bruise the head of the serpent. And Abel, who truly worshiped
God, being murdered by his brother, Satan no doubt thinking he's
putting an end to this foolishness. Foolishness. Then God brings along Seth. This
is the one, listen, this is the one appointed. This is the one
appointed through whom the seed's gonna come through. Now after
Seth has a son, It says, men began to call on the name of
the Lord. See, now we go over to Seth. We leave Cain. We leave him out there with their
entertainment, their agriculture. We leave him out there with herself. But when it comes to Seth, the
appointed one, what does it talk about? True worship. We come now back to worship of
God. When we talk about God's people,
we talk about worship. worshiping God. Men, it said, began to call the
name of the Lord, or the correct translation is this, they began
to call themselves by the name of the Lord. Just as we are called, and I
know it's abused, we are called Christians, Christ followers.
Christ followers. Sons, here it is, sons of God. Now are we, John said, now are
we the sons of God. This separates them from the
Cainites. There was a distinct separation
made right here. Cain, he built a city, and they
create all these things for entertainment and to entertain the flesh. And then we have Seth, and we
have true worship. We have true worship. Nothing
is said about how they made their living. I mean, they had to go
to work every day, they had to do something. We had to go to
work every day, we had to do something, pay the bills. But
here's something, the thought that came to me, I thought was
interesting. Nothing is said about how they made a living,
but that they worship God. They worship God. If there's anything that you
and I want to be said about us, that's true. When we die, they
worship God. He, she worship Almighty God. It's not what I did in my life
to pay the bills, but that I worship God. True worship was established. Most of the writers said that
this is when public worship began, and there began to be a real
distinction between the line of Seth and true worship and
the Cainites and their hatred of God. And
now chapter five, and I'll just touch on this. I think it's interesting
here now in chapter five, and that's how, that's the end of
Cain. That's the end of Cain. That's about all we're gonna
deal with Cain. Cain's gonna, his whole posterity's gonna drown
in the flood. All of it. The whole human race
right now came through the line of Seth right now. The line of
Cain is gone. It's gone. It all came through
Seth. But anyway, it's interesting
how chapter five, it starts out, this, it says here, let me get
to chapter five. This is the book of the generations
of Adam in the day that God created man in the likeness of God made
he him. Now turn over to Matthew chapter
one. Only two times in the word of
God is it written like this. You have the book of the generations
of Adam. In Matthew chapter one, we have the book of the generation
of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. And one of the
things that jumped out at me was in Genesis 5, one says, this
is the book of the generations, plural. of Adam, and the day that God created
man in the likeness of God made he him. But in Matthew, when
it speaks of the generation of Jesus Christ, it's singular.
It's singular. This is what Adam produced, all
these generations. But when it speaks of the Lord
Jesus Christ, it speaks of it as one generation. It's just one family. One body. It's just one. It's just one
generation. You and I are just a part of
that. We're just a part of that. But it's just one. But throughout
the whole Bible, we have the first Adam and the second Adam,
that we really dealing with. The first Adam, and what he caused,
and the second Adam, and what he brought forth, what he brought
to us. Look over in Romans chapter five. Look at verse 12. Romans chapter
five, here's a comparison of the first Adam and the second
Adam. Wherefore, as by one man, Adam, sin entered into the world,
and death by sin. And so death passed upon all
men, for that all have sinned. For until the law, sin was in
the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless,
death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned
after the likeness of Adam's transgressions, who is the figure
of him that was to come. But not as the offense, so also
is the free gift, for if through the offense of one many be dead,
which is Adam, much more the grace of God and the gift of
God, which is by one man, the Lord Jesus Christ, the second
Adam, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that
sinned, so is the gift. For the judgment was by one to
condemnation. The judgment was by the one act
of disobedience, the whole world fell under condemnation. But the free gift is of many
offenses, many. Oh, brother, we have many offenses.
You see, the whole world fell under condemnation by one offense.
Adam disobeyed God by one command. He only had one command, and
he disobeyed God. But the free gift is of many
offenses because we have offended God many times since. unto justification. For if by
one man's offense death reign by one, much more they which
receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness
shall reign in life by one. Therefore, as by the offense
of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation, even so
by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto
justification of life. Can you see the wisdom of God in allowing the whole human race
to fall in one man? I know there's some say that's
not fair. No, it's not. It's wise. It's the wisdom of
God that he let the whole human race fall in one man. Because
by the obedience of one man, God can save all whom he's going
to save out of this human race. For as by one man's disobedience,
many were made sinners. That's how I was made a sinner.
I was made a sinner by one man's disobedience. It says back over there in Genesis
5.3, let me read it real quick. And Adam lived 130 years and
beget a son in his own likeness. That's all he can do. You can
only produce a son or daughter in your own likeness. That's
the wisdom of God. That's the wisdom of God. That's
what I see. Moreover, the law entered that
the offense might abound, but where sin abounded, grace did
much more abound, that as sin hath reigned unto death, even
so might grace reign." That's how grace reigns, that's how
God can keep forgiving you and me. I sin every day, you sin every,
more than every day, minute by minute. We sin minute by minute. And the only way God can have
anything to do with us is that His grace is able to rain on
me through the righteousness of that man, the second Adam,
Jesus Christ. That's how His grace keeps raining.
You think I'm gonna wear it out? If it could, you would. If it
were possible, you would. that as sin hath reigned unto
death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal
life by Jesus Christ our Lord. The first Adam was created from
the dust of the ground. The second Adam is the Lord from
heaven. The first Adam brought in sin
and death. The second Adam brought in righteousness
and life. The first Adam broke God's law.
The second Adam kept God's law. The children of the first Adam are all born dead to God. Every one of us, by birth, by
nature, are spiritually stillborn, dead to God. But all the children of the second
Adam are all made alive to God. The first Adam can produce nothing
but a bunch of canes, The second Adam produces nothing but angels. The second Adam. Well, Lord willing, we'll look
at Enoch, who walked with God. See, it doesn't say one word
about what Enoch did, does it? It doesn't say what he did for
a living. It just says Enoch walked with
God. The only thing that matters Is
my connection to the Lord, that I worship Him, is not what I
do for a living. It's not what I do. It's Christ
and Christ alone. All right.
