Rebekah; wife of Isaac . . . is a type of every child of God with an old man and a new man within; a constant and lifelong struggle. Why? As Rebekah inquired of the Lord, so does every believer . . . Why is it so? If a child of God, why must I be always struggling with my sinful flesh?

Now go back to Genesis 25 with
me. Genesis 25. We read Romans 7, in which Paul spoke of an inward
warfare. between the old man and the new
man, and every child of God, every one born of God, every
believer, every one of Christ's bride, his wife. That's what
this story is a type of. Genesis 25, let's read verses
19 through 23. These are the generations of
Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham beget Isaac, and Isaac
was 40 years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter
of Bethuel, the Syrian of Paddanim, the sister to Laban, Syria. And Isaac entreated the Lord
for his wife because she was barren. And the Lord was entreated
of him. And Rebekah, his wife, conceived. And the children struggled together
within her. And she said, If it be so, why
am I thus? And she went to inquire of the
Lord. And the Lord said unto her, Two
nations are in thy womb, two manner of people shall be separated
from thy bowels. The one people shall be stronger
than the other people, and the elder shall serve the younger."
No doubt that the Lord here is speaking of the nations, two
nations are in thy womb, and no doubt he's speaking of those
things historically. Our Lord Jesus Christ once said
to his disciples, My word are spirits. Spirit. So the first meaning, the true
meaning, the reason which this was written and all of God's
Word was written is a spiritual reason. Okay? Now, my hope is
that not only will we marvel at God's Word, His truth, but
that the true child of God in here, the true bride of Christ,
will rejoice and be comforted and have some assurance that
God has done a real work in me, that there's life in me, that
I'm not dead in sin, that I've been quickened. And I hope the
same message the Lord will be pleased to plant his seed in
someone else and quicken them, that Christ, as Scripture says,
may be formed in you. Isaac. Verse 19, the generations
of Isaac. He's the son of promise. Isaac
is a gift to Abraham. Isaac is the heir. of all things. Isaac is a type of Christ, the
son of promise, the prophesied son of God who was to come, the
gift, the unspeakable gift of God to his chosen people. The
only begotten son and all the promises of God in him are yea
and amen to the glory of God the Father by us, all the blessings
All the blessings, salvation is completely in the Lord Jesus
Christ. And we're heirs. God's people
are joint heirs with Him. All the fullness of God. Verse
20, Isaac took a wife. He took a wife. He took Rebekah. God gave this wife to Isaac,
didn't He? Miraculously. the Spirit of God
made this woman willing, and the day of his power did. And
our Lord Jesus Christ was given a bride before the foundation
of the world, given his beloved, his wife, to him by the Father,
betrothed to him before the world began. Our Lord Jesus Christ
is our husband, given to him by the Father, chosen by God
like Rebekah was for Isaac, prepared by the angel of the Lord to meet
Christ like Rebekah was for Isaac. We have heard the gospel. This
is how we fell in love with and came to know the Son of God,
like Rebekah, from a servant. Fell in love with him, an unseen
man. left home, left everyone to go
to him, like Rebecca. Isaac prayed and treated the
Lord for his wife because she was barren. She had no fruit. Her womb was dead. So Isaac prayed
for her. He didn't pray for everyone.
He prayed for his bride. He didn't pray for the world.
He prayed for Rebekah. And the Lord was entreated by
him. The Lord heard him. Our Lord,
people, it doesn't say anything about Rebekah praying before
she conceived. It doesn't mention Rebekah praying
until after she conceived. We're not saved by our prayers.
I know whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be
saved. I know our Lord said, Ask, and you shall receive. Seek,
and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened.
I know that. But the Lord also said, I am
sought of them that ask not for me. I am found of them that sought
me not. How can that be? Ask Philip. He'll tell you. He wasn't looking,
but he found it. And we don't call. God's people
don't call until he first calls us. You understand that? If you've
been called, you do. Everyone that's been called understands
completely that they would never have called on him had not he
called them first. They would never love him had
not he loved them first. They would never choose him,
if you want to call it choosing him. He would never have done
that had he not chosen him first. Because he gets all the glory.
We don't share it. We don't share it. It's his choice. It's his call. It's his power. It's his sovereign will. Not
ours. Not of the will of flesh. Not
of the will of man. But of God. Born of God. Called
of God. Chosen of God. Loved of God.
Redeemed by Christ. Saved by his Call, bring, brought, drawn. It's all to the praise of the
glory of His grace. Rebecca's passive. In this whole
story, Rebecca is passive. She's a receiver. She's a recipient. She's not doing anything. It's
all been done to her. It's all been done for her. Her
husband's praying for her. Her husband's going to impregnate
her. She had nothing to do with it. So it is in salvation. All of Christ's bride know that. They realize that. That's their
language. That's their testimony. To Him
be the glory, both now and forever. They sing in glory right now,
not unto us, not unto us. but unto thee be all the glory.
Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins and his own
blood. Unto him be all the riches, power, glory, strength, honor,
all things. Unto him, our beloved husband,
the Lord Jesus Christ. We were recipients. We were vessels
of mercy which you prepared before. Unto glory. I could close the
book. And I told you the gospel. I
told you the whole counsel of God, the whole message in this
gospel. If that's your story, you rejoice. Isaac prayed for his wife. She
was barren. And so are we. We're born that
way. We don't bear fruit under God. In fact, we're rotten apples. There's no life in us. We're
dead and trespassing sin. How long was Rebecca barren? 20 years. 20 years. Long time. How long was
some of you barren? No faith. No understanding of
God. No lights. Blind. Deaf. Dumb. Haught. Lame. How long? 20, 30,
40, 50. sixty, seventy years. It doesn't matter how long. With
God, all things are possible. She's barren. But God promised,
you see. God promised Isaac, in you, my
seed will be called. You will have a child. So what
did Isaac do? Nothing? No. He prayed. Here's the paradox. Says, come unto me, all ye that
labor. But he said, no man can. Call
upon me, but no man will call. No man will. Ask, but they won't
ask. They're dead. But here's the
point. We, as believers, like Isaac,
trust the promises of God, the sure word of God, the promises
that cannot fail. And he says, ask. He said, call.
He says, preach. Can these dry bones live, Ezekiel? Paul, can these bones live? These
people that sit there listening to the gospel and they don't
hear a thing. What am I going to do? Here's what you do, preacher. Prophesy. Preach. And call unto
the wind. Oh, wind, blow upon thy garden
and let the fruit come out. The wind bloweth where it listeth.
He cannot tell the sound thereof. But here's what you do. You just
preach the Word. Instant, in season, out of season.
You just preach the Word. Don't beg, don't plead, don't
bribe, don't try tricks, don't try gimmicks, all that. You just
preach the Word. Just cast a hook. I'll put a
fish on it. Cast a net. And I'll apprehend
them. I'll bring them. So my hope is
that the same message that gives comfort will break the heart
and pierce the heart this morning. It does. That's what it does.
The Lord was entreated by Isaac, and the Lord will hear. The eye
of the Lord is upon the righteous, those in Christ, and his ear
is opened unto their prayer. He'll hear them. Keep praying,
Isaac, ten years. How long did he pray? Keep praying
twenty years. If she's like most women, when
she was a young woman, she wanted to have a baby. And Isaac kept
praying. You see, it doesn't tell us,
does it, how long, how much time went by here. She kept praying,
Oh, Lord, my son is barren. Oh, Lord, my daughter is barren.
Oh, Lord, my grandchild is barren. Oh, Lord, my wife is barren. There's no faith. She doesn't
have, please, Lord. And the Lord was intrigued. The
effectual perfect prayer of a righteous man availed her. Keep praying.
Keep praying. As I said, there's no mention
of Rebecca praying until afterward. Verse 22, after she conceived,
she went to the fire of the Lord. When Saul of Tarsus, who was dead, he was
religious. And many people that are religious
think they know God. They don't. They're like Saul
of Tarsus. They're just self-righteous. They have a form of godliness,
going about to establish their own righteousness, ignorant of
God's righteousness. Like Saul of Tarsus, that's where
he said, I will. I was dead. I didn't know God,
didn't know Christ. I was moral. I thought I was blameless. Slew me. That's what we raised.
Slew me. Killed me. Got to be killed to be made alive.
Got to be a leper to be cleansed. And the Lord slew that religious
man, revealed himself to him, brought him down off of his high
horse, his religious self-righteous horse, into the dust before the
Lord Jesus Christ to see who he was and see that Saul is nothing. And nothing he ever did is all
done. All he ever thought he knew,
all he ever thought he did for God was in vain. to show him
that Christ is all. Your only hope of heaven to be
accepted by God as Jesus is me, Saul, me. And it says later on that Ananias,
the Lord told Ananias to go down to the house of one Saul to talk
to him, to speak to him, to preach to him. He said, Oh, Lord, he's a mean man. The Lord said,
no, behold, he prayeth. He is now calling on God through
me, the Lord Jesus Christ. That's how you know. He's now
seeking. He's now asking. That's how you know when the
Lord's called somebody, they start asking. But they're not
given life because they call. You're not given life because
you call. You're not given life because
you believe. You believe because you've been
given life. You call because he called you,
quicken you. Quicken you. Call. You've never
heard that voice before. Call on me. Rebecca conceives. Conception is not easy. Some
women think so, don't they? Some women think so. Oh, it's
easy to conceive a child. No, it's not. It's a miracle.
It's a miracle of God's grace. All of the hindrances, all of
the things that can go wrong, perfect temperature. And I'm
not going to go into that. I'm not a whatever, a doctor. But it is, it's not easy. It's
a wonderful, marvelous miracle of God's power and grace. Ask
some women who tried it and failed. No matter what happened, God
gives life. And religion would have us think
that salvation is easy, 1, 2, 3, Romans road, you know, step.
You do this, you do that, and then you say, oh no, with man
it's impossible. You don't give yourself life.
No baby ever decided to have life. How foolish can you get? They aren't even in the picture.
Somebody else decided. A man, a woman said, Let's get
together. That's just the type there. With man, it's impossible. And
as I said, the Lord said, this is the way it's done. How shall
they hear without a preacher? How shall they call on Him whom
they've not heard? How shall they believe in Him whom they've not
believed? How shall they believe in Him whom they've not heard?
How shall they hear without a preacher? How shall they really preach
the truth except there be sin? And so, preach. Oh, Lord, I'm
such a poor preacher. It's not You. It's not by might. It's not by power. It's by my
spirit, saith the Lord. It's by my word. It's not your
ability to convey it. It's not your ability to say
it. You're not planning that. I am, God said. Get up there
and just preach to the best of your ability, which is not much,
but do it anyway. And stand back and watch. And you will know. You'll know.
The preacher will know better than anybody if God does something
through this poor vessel, like the servant of Isaac looking
for Rebecca. Why? God does this. It's of the
Lord, not me. And he does. He does just that,
this thing called foolishness by the world. Quickens, a dead,
uninterested, blind, death-sinner with no ears, no eyes to see
Christ, no ears to hear his voice. One day, in the fullness of time,
God sends His Son in the preaching of the gospel, His Son looking
for His Bride through the messenger of a servant, and His Bride hears
His voice at the well. He's at the well. By the way,
Isaac came from that well when Rebekah saw him. He was at the
well, the holy one. And when God does that, they're
quickened. When the Word is planted, when
the gospel is planted, they're quickened. New life begins. The seed, the Word, new life
begins. A new creature is formed within
them. What is this new creature? Christ in you. The hope of God. Faith in Christ. Love for Christ.
A new man in the image of Christ. You're not going to believe this.
But you ought to if I tell you. And I called Hannah, my daughter,
to ask her about symptoms during pregnancy, because I wouldn't
know. I called her to ask her about
what were some of the first symptoms that you felt. Mindy was not
home, and I couldn't get a hold of her. And I called Hannah.
And she said, you know, you're going to love this. You're not
going to believe this, but science, pediatrics, medicine has given
a term, a phrase, a term, a word to those first symptoms felt
by a pregnant woman. She said, you know what they
call it? Quickening. When a woman finally conceives,
there's life in her. She's been quickened. First feelings. Something's happening. Something's
in me that wasn't there before. And what happened? Here's what
happened with Rebecca. He says the children struggled
within her. There were two in her. Twins. Twins that came out. They were
not identical. But they were both men. Male. Not identical. They were poles
apart. Completely different. But they
were men. Creatures. And the first thing
she felt was this inward struggle. this inward conflict, trouble. And she was thinking, not knowing
what pregnancy is about, thinking, oh, if I could just have a baby,
I'd be so happy. If I could just get pregnant,
I'd be so happy. It would just be a wonderful
experience. And let some woman tell her who
had several, Oh, honey, it is wonderful. But oh, are you going
to suffer. Oh, are you going to go through
conflict. Oh, are you going to go through
inward pain. And oh, in the labor, oh, are
you going to labor. And oh, when that baby's born,
for joy that a man is born into the world, you're going to forget
all the pain. What a beautiful picture, huh?
What a beautiful picture. But she said, if it be so, verse
22, Lord, if you'd bless me. You told me you'd give me a child
and you've given me a child. And you have. You give me two.
And we've received at the Lord's hand double. You give me two. Two children. But they're struggling
within me. Why is this? Why is there this
struggle, this battle, this conflict? within me? What's wrong with
me? Am I going to lose these babies?
Am I going to have a dying child
birth? No, the Lord's not going to bring to the birth and bring
forth wind. He that hath begun a good work
in you, he's going to finish it. The child's going to be born
again and be mature. Why am I this? And she went,
verse 22 says, she went to inquire of the Lord. Where'd she go?
Did you see that? She went to inquire of the Lord. Where did she go? You know, Matthew
Henry, John Gill, and a couple of others said she went to Melchizedek. He had the Urim and Thummim.
You know that we mistakenly think Abraham is dead right now. He's
not. Abraham lived 15 years. You know that? I thought, no. Matthew Henry pointed that out.
She went to Abraham. He's the friend of God. He's
the man of God. He's the one that God raised
up. Who better to go to? How wise would it be? And she
did. She went to him, and she inquired
of the old man, whoever it was. Or if she went to a private place
to pray, or if she went to a public place of worship where prayer
was wont to be made, like Lydia. If she went where prayer was
wont to be made. And she's inquiring of the Lord. You see, that's
of the Lord. Life has begun. Behold, he prayeth. She prayeth. She went to inquire of the Lord.
Who comes to inquire of the Lord? Whoever inquires of the Lord,
the Lord is going to answer. Whoever calls on the Lord will
be saved. Who does? Those who have been quickened. She went to inquire of the Lord. And she said, Lord, if you bless
me, if I'm chosen by you, why do I feel this way? Why do I
have this terrible inward struggle? As I said, she was probably worried
about losing the children. It was such a terrible struggle
within her. And the Lord said this, There
are two nations in thy womb, and two manner of people shall
be separated from thy bowels. The one people shall be stronger
than the other people, and the elder shall serve the younger. There are two manner of people
within you. Now go to Romans 7 that Brother
Matt read for us. Go to Romans 7, which Brother
Mack read. Two men are a people in you.
And the Lord, this is what He tells us here, what He tells
every one of His people, His chosen ones, His bride, His wife.
The Lord Jesus tells us all, there are two men in you now.
Now that you've been quickened, now that the seed has been sown,
conceived, you've received power, spirit, the Word, the truth,
the love of the truth. Life has been given you. There
are two men in you now. You're no longer barren. You're
alive. There's two men in you, flesh
and spirit. Before, there was only flesh. Now, there's a new man. And this flesh is flesh, and
that which is spirit is spirit. And they're both men, but they're
poles apart. And the fact that they live in
one person, it's a constant battle. You never had this battle before,
did you? Are you with me? This is how
you know you have life. This is how you know. Romans
7 verse 21 says, I find a law that when I would do good, evil
is present with me. Whenever I try to do good, there
is something in me evil. Anybody? It's just a constant
struggle. I delight in the law of God.
See, there was a time when I didn't. There was a time when I did not
delight in the law of God. I had no pleasure in righteousness,
as Romans 6 says. There was a time when I found
no pleasure in the Word of God and the reading of it and the
hearing of it and meeting with God's people, singing these hymns.
It was noise. A little while, it was a noise
to my ears to hear these. What happened? Why do you now
love him? See? Take comfort. But there's this other man in
me. I see a law in my members, verse
23, warring against the law of my mind, bringing me into captivity,
holding me down, wrestling with me. Law of sins in my members. Oh, wretched man, he said that
I am. Galatians 5 says the flesh lusts
against the Spirit, fights against the Spirit. And bless God, the
Spirit against the flesh. And our Lord, oh, blessed be
His name, He came to His disciples at His most trying hour, and
they're asleep. He gently rebukes them. They
needed to be. But yet He knows our frame. That's
why He came. He came to do it for us, to pray
for us, to die for us. We're miserable failures. Everything
we try to do good, there's this old man in it that keeps us down. And our Lord knows that. And
He said this, oh, get comfort from this, people. Get comfort
from this. He said the Spirit is willing. There's a new man in you that's
willing, made willing in the day of His
power, that wants God's will, that wants God's way, that wants
God to be like Christ, to be holy, to be without sin. There's
a new man in there that loves holiness and loves righteousness
and loves God's Word, loves God's love, loves the people of God,
but there's an old man that hates everything. The flesh is weak. The Spirit is willing, he said,
but the flesh is weak. But get up and pray that you
enter not into temptation. Not with standing. Get up and
pray. Not with standing. Look at verse
25 here in Romans 7. It says, I thank God through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Who is going to deliver me? The
Deliverer. That's His name. So then, he says, verse 25, with
the mind I serve the law of God. With the flesh, the law of sin. Before life is given, before
the Spirit of God comes in to dwell in His people, there's
no conflict with sin. No conflict at all. That old
man loves it. He doesn't wrestle with it. He
doesn't hate it. He loves it. He's dead to righteousness.
He's dead to holiness. He's alive to sin. That's what
Paul said before the law came. I was alive. Paul was in religion. It's just as dead. You can be just as dead in religion
as you can in the gutter. You can be just as lost. In fact,
our Lord said, if the light is in you, as you think it's light
and be darkness, you're in a double darkness. If a person is in a
refuge of lies, oh my, it takes the same blood and righteousness
to save a religious person as it does a murderer and a thief. Saul of Tarsus and the thief
on the cross were saved one way. Saul of Tarsus and the thief
on the cross were saved one way, by Jesus Christ, His blood, His
righteousness, His will, His sovereign choice, His power,
everything He did for them. It's clear about the thief and
it's equally clear about solitarists. Christ is all. Christ is all. Well, there are two different
natures, two different men in the same body. Some deny this,
but I don't know how they could deny God's Scripture. Or as Brother
Cunningham said, men will argue about the new birth until they
experience it. They'll argue about these things
until they experience it. Then there's no more argument.
Like Saul. There's an old man that we were
born and raised with. There's an old man in us that
we were born and raised with. And he's like Esau. He hates
God. Yes, he does. Esau, we're going
to see, I don't know when, Wednesday or next Sunday, sold his birthright
for a pot of beans. The birthright was everything
that had to do with God. All the blessings of God. He
said, I don't care about that. You can have it. Just give me
a boat, something to eat. My God is my belly. I don't care
about God. I need to eat. And that's what
Paul said, I say now even weeping of many that their God is their
belly. Oh Lord, quicken them, would you? Quicken them. There's
an old man that hates God that sells the birthright. There's
another one loved by God. Jacob have I loved. And he's
a prince with God. An old man that's going to always
be with us as long as we're in the flesh. So is this man of
flesh. So is this old man within us.
Old thoughts are going to be with us. The
same thoughts that we had as a teenager when we were 70 years
old. Right, men? Right, Henry? Right?
The same thoughts that you had as a teenager are going to rise
up in your mind as an old man. The same desires The same sins
that you think, someday I'll be done with that. No, you won't. No, you won't. Sins are like
weeds. There's one weed, Spurgeon brought
it up, horseradish is a weed that's over in England, very
common, not over here. I planted it in my garden. I
planted a weed in my garden. They would laugh at me over there,
but I did. But you know what? Like Spurgeon
said, that stuff is almost impossible to get rid of. It will crop up
where you least expect it. It will run a chute all the way
across under the ground and come up somewhere else. Isn't that
the case? I thought, I've got it confined
here. I've got this horseradish, this weed, I've got it confined
where I can watch it. Where does weeds, sin crop up? You say, I'm done with that.
That's over. That's out of my life. When will I ever be rid of this?
Never in this lifetime. We come here to get weeded. The old man is a devil. He thought
his father was a devil. The serpent's seed. The new man's
born of God. And do you know the seed of the
serpent and the seed of the woman have always been enmity. Since
the garden, every single son and child of God has been, Satan
has assaulted them. He doesn't bother people in religion. He doesn't bother people out
in the gutter. Got him right where he wants him. Got him right
where he wants him. But when God comes, sends his
gospel to set the captive free, oh, then Satan's not going to
let go. He does. He must. That's stronger
than him. Takes him captive. But then he
keeps us out. Think, I'll have him back. And
war with the Lamb. And there's a warfare that never
stops in this world. It only gets stronger. Evil is
always there. That's what Paul said. It's always
there. And every child of God goes to
inquire of the Lord. They come here and they go in
their closets and they go inquire of the Lord. Lord, why am I thus? If I have found grace in thy
sight, why am I like this? If I'm a child of God, why am
I like this? If I've been born again and old
things have passed away, why do these old things keep coming
up? Why am I thus? If it be so, if
I'm saved, why do I still have these things that bring me into
captivity? Why do I think these thoughts?
Why am I so sinful? Why can't I get rid of sin? Do
you ever think that? If I could just be rid of sin. No, it must be so. It must be so. And you know,
there's a verse over in Isaiah, where is it? Over in Isaiah 60. Oh, the people of Israel said
this, Oh Lord, listen. Oh Lord, they said, they prayed,
why hast thou made us to err from thy ways and harden our
hearts from thy fear? Do you know what that's talking
about? Every believer knows. They're not blaming God for their
sin. What they're saying is, why don't you get rid of this? Why do I remain hard? You can soften me. Why do I err
when you can stop me? They're not blaming him at all.
They're just saying, Lord, if I could just quit sinning, if
it be so, why am I thus? Now, listen to me, for your comfort. For your comfort. It's good.
It's good. It makes us inquire of the Lord. We wouldn't. We wouldn't call
until we got in trouble. We wouldn't. Everything's going
just fine. That's what our Lord warned the
people of God in Deuteronomy. He said, beware lest you've built
houses and this and that and the other, and you're healthy
and wealthy, fine, and everything's going fine, but you forget God. Forget God. Then they get in
trouble, Psalm 107. Then they get in trouble because
of their own sin. Then they call on the Lord, and
what happens? And they're so thankful. It makes
us thankful for mercy and grace. The angels can't enter into that.
The angels can't enter into mercy. The angels can't enter into grace.
They can't. Such love as that, they can't
enter into. It makes us call, makes us seek, makes us keep
coming. If we didn't sin, we wouldn't come to Christ. If we
come to Christ, for what? Forgiveness of sin. It's good. Because it makes the gospel of
Christ's blood and righteousness imputed precious. It's only precious
to a sinner. Christ, to you that believe,
believe what? That you're a sinner, that in
your flesh dwells no good thing. To you that know that from experience,
he is precious. The blood of Christ is precious.
The righteousness of Christ to some is just a doctrine to a
sinner. It's his life. It's his garments. It's his covering. It's his refuge. It's a good thing. That's how sin can be a good
thing. Why is it so? Why am I thus?
Because it keeps us humble, keeps us down if we didn't ever fail
or sin, we'd get so self-righteous. We'd be lifted up in pride, and
then we're in the condemnation of the devil. We'd be lifted
up with pride, and sin keeps us humble. I told you not long ago about Miriam
that everybody looked up to, a faultless woman, a leader. And she got lifted up in pride
when it gets to Moses, thinking she was something. God made an
example out of Mary. But what did the Lord do to her? Made her a leper. And cast her out. She was loathsome
to herself. A leper. And she finally realized,
I don't deserve to hear this gospel. I don't deserve the man
that the Lord put to lead me. I am loathsome in my person.
Dear Lord, I don't deserve to be with these people You brought
out of Egypt. Would You please let me come back?" And He did. That's what He does. We don't
have to do this. If we ever get lifted up with
pride, the sin keeps us humble, makes us compassionate to others
and forgiving. There wouldn't be a compassionate
bone in our body, a forgiving bone in our body, if we didn't
think we were capable of the worst thing that anybody's done. Oh, my. When we realize what
we're capable of or have actually done or thought, and only the
restraining grace of God kept us from it. We will be compassionate
with. We will be forgiving. We will
forbear. We will put up with. We will
understand our brother understanding something of ourselves. Then
and then on. Why am I thus? That's why. That's why. But good news, sinner. In our text, look at what our
Lord promises. Here's the good news. I close
with this. Our Lord said to Rebekah, why am I like this? He inquired
of the Lord, why is this going on, this struggle within me?
And you know, it's not going to get better, this thing between
Jacob and Esau. It's going to tear Rebekah apart. And the Lord said, Rebekah, two
nations are in thy womb, two manner of people, two different
people, be separated. They can't walk together. They're
going to be separated. The one people, here's the promise,
one's going to be stronger than the other. Who's that? Esau stronger
than Jacob? No, sir. No, sir. Greater is he that is
in you than he's in the world. The elder, that old man, And
this is good news. He's going to serve the younger. He's going to be brought into
subjection. Sin shall not have dominion over you. Oh, Lord,
it's got me. I'm brought into captivity. No, Paul. No. You've got to deliver. It shall not have dominion over
you. You're not under the law. You're under grace, and your
Heavenly Father, your husband, like Isaac, will take care of
you from now on. He'll see to those boys. He'll
deal with those boys. Oh, my. Greater is He. And Esau hated Jacob and went
after him from that day on. You know that? Hated him. Jacob's
life was one long struggle full of sin and sorrow and troubles
and trials and tribulations until one day, listen to me, one day
somebody said, Jacob, he's an old man, old man. He said, few and evil have been
the days of my years. Somebody said, Jacob, Joseph
is on the throne. Joseph is alive. And on the throne,
Jacob and his sending for you. You're coming home. All your troubles are over. There's going to come a day when
Esau is going to quit chasing us. Because Christ lives. Our husband. And we're going to hear that
call one day. Be blessed of my father. Prepare
to come. It's over. The warfare's over. All right. Let's sing in closing. I forget. What's the number, John? 129.
129. Let's all stand.
