How do we know that salvation comes through grace and not works?

Answered in 1 source

Salvation is a gift of grace and not based on human works, as clearly stated in Ephesians 2:8-9.

The doctrine of salvation by grace is foundational in the New Testament. Ephesians 2:8-9 points out that 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' This establishes that human efforts cannot earn salvation or add to Christ's finished work on the cross. Historic Reformed theology emphasizes this truth, asserting that salvation is entirely God's work, initiated by His sovereign grace. The Apostle Paul, exemplifying this in his own life, radically shifts from trusting in his accomplishments to relying solely on the righteousness of Christ (Philippians 3:7-9), highlighting that salvation cannot be contingent on personal merit but completely on Christ's righteousness.
