How do we know total inability is true?

Answered in 1 source

Total inability is evidenced by Scripture which states that the natural man cannot understand or receive spiritual truths.

The doctrine of total inability holds that fallen humanity is unable to choose God or understand spiritual truth without divine assistance. Scripture supports this notion, particularly in Romans 8:7 and 1 Corinthians 2:14, which describe the natural mind as hostile to God and incapable of receiving the spiritual things of God. This inability arises not from a lack of opportunity but from the intrinsic preferences and desires of the fallen heart.

In a state of spiritual death, a person cannot respond to God because spiritual matters hold no appeal to them; they are perceived as foolishness. Therefore, it is God's sovereign grace that must change the heart and mind, enabling one to see the value and truth of Christ. Once the heart is changed, individuals willingly choose to come to Christ, exemplifying how God's grace transforms preferences, allowing the will to align with the divine.
