How do we understand the concept of total depravity?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity means that every part of human nature is affected by sin, rendering us incapable of saving ourselves.

Total depravity asserts that every aspect of humanity—mind, will, emotions, and flesh—is deeply affected by sin due to the Fall. This doctrine teaches that because of our sinful nature, we are unable to respond to God in our own strength and need divine intervention for salvation. As reflected in Romans 3:10-12, there is no one righteous; we all fall short of God’s glory. Recognition of total depravity leads to a greater understanding of the necessity of grace and the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning work on the cross, affirming that salvation is solely by God’s grace and not influenced by our works.
