What does the Bible mean by 'fig leaf righteousness'?

Answered in 1 source

'Fig leaf righteousness' refers to attempts to cover one's sin through self-made efforts rather than finding true righteousness in Christ.

The term 'fig leaf righteousness' metaphorically stems from the actions of Adam and Eve after their sin, when they sewed fig leaves to cover their nakedness (Genesis 3:7). This represents futile human attempts to establish a righteousness of their own. The Bible clearly indicates that these self-made coverings are inadequate and insufficient, as all self-righteousness is ultimately as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). True righteousness is found solely in Christ, who fulfills the Law perfectly on our behalf. Without recognizing the ineffectiveness of our 'fig leaf' efforts, we remain separated from the perfect covering found in Christ’s blood (Hebrews 9:22).
