What does the Bible say about prophecy?

Answered in 4 sources

The Bible teaches that prophecy is not of private interpretation and is meant for the whole community of believers.

The Bible asserts that prophecy is not a personal or private matter but is intended as the collective property of God's people. In 2 Peter 1:20, we read that no prophecy is of any private interpretation. This indicates that the prophetic words spoken by the inspired authors were meant to resonate with the entire family of God, both in their time and through the ages. For example, David’s confessions of sin, although deeply personal, apply to all who recognize their condemnation due to sin. Similarly, Joshua's promise from God, ‘I will never leave you, nor forsake you,’ though initially directed at him, extends to all believers, highlighting the inclusive nature of God’s promises.
