Why is the concept of original sin important in Reformed theology?

Answered in 1 source

Original sin is crucial because it explains humanity's fallen state and need for grace.

In Reformed theology, the doctrine of original sin illustrates that all humanity is born dead in trespasses and sins due to Adam's transgression. This foundational concept demonstrates that sin is not merely an act but a natural condition inherited from our forefather. As a result, we cannot attain righteousness by our own efforts or merit. Understanding original sin drives home the necessity of sovereign grace: we are utterly dependent on God's initiative to redeem us through Christ. It reminds us of the depths of our depravity, leading us to exalt the sufficiency of Christ's redemptive work on our behalf, where He is the last Adam who provides restoration to the fallen.
