Why is understanding grace and works important for Christians?

Answered in 4 sources

Understanding the relationship between grace and works is crucial to ensure a true faith that does not mix human effort with divine grace.

The interplay of grace and works is profoundly significant in Christian doctrine. As stated in Romans 11:6, 'And if by grace, then it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.' This underscores the fact that salvation is solely by God’s grace and not a result of human efforts or merit. When individuals juxtapose grace with works, they undermine the essence of the Gospel and risk falling into false teachings that Paul warns against in Galatians. True faith produces good works as a fruit of salvation, but these works are evidence of the grace already received, not a means to gain favor with God. A proper understanding leads to assurance in Christ and prevents the destructive belief in a works-based righteousness.
