Good morning. Let's open this
morning's service with hymn number 21 in the softback or the spiral
gospel hymns hymnal, number 21. And let's all stand together. God the Father and the Son and
the Spirit, three in one, in eternal ages past, made a covenant
sure and fast. God my Father chose His own in
the person of His Son, and ordained that I should be one with Him
eternally. God the Son agreed to come in
the flesh to bring me home. He would keep God's holy law
And retrieve me from the fall Christ in love so willingly Stood
as my great surety For my price He offered blood to appease the
wrath of God. God the Spirit, heav'nly dove,
promised to come down in love, bringing life and peace and grace
to the chosen, purchased race. The lost heals the lame, and
He brings us to the Lamb. By His mighty sovereign call,
God's elect are gathered all. This poor sinner is secure, for
God's covenant will endure. It is sealed by God's own word,
by His Spirit and His blood. Blessed Holy Covenant God, I
am yours by ties of blood, ties of grace and ties of love. Hold me to my God above. Please be seated. chosen by the Father, redeemed
by the Son, and regenerated by the Holy Spirit. That's a salvation
that's sure and steadfast. Salvations of the Lord. What
a glorious covenant. I love that hymn. The whole gospel's
in that hymn. Good morning. Let's open our
Bibles together to Acts chapter 2. Acts chapter 2. No, that is not what the building
is going to look like out there. That's just a block sealer that
Bert put on there this weekend. And actually, the outside of
the building will be just like the outside of this building
and have the lap siding on it. So that'll just help keep some
of the moisture out. Let's ask the Lord's blessings
on our time together. Our merciful and gracious Heavenly
Father. What great hope you give us.
And knowing that we come into thy presence. In the name of
thy dear son. That we have. Perfect acceptance,
forgiveness of sin. Hope of eternal life. Or that
we have your heart and your ear. Lord, how hopeful we are that
Be pleased this morning to rend the heavens and come down. We
pray that you would send your blessed spirit. To open the eyes
of our understanding. To impart to us the gift of faith. To enable us to set our affections
on Christ. Lord, we. Thank you for the hope
of eternal life. We thank you for the shed blood
of Christ and for the forgiveness of our sin. We pray Lord for
those who may remain strangers to your grace. And we ask Lord
that she would call them out of darkness into your marvelous
light. And that you would reveal to them. The glory of Christ
and the hope of their salvation. For it's in Christ's name we
ask it, amen. In Deuteronomy chapter 16, the
Lord gave to the Old Testament church three feast days or holy
days that they were to observe without exception, every male,
in Israel was required to come to Jerusalem to the temple and
make a sacrifice on these three holy days. One of them was the
day of Passover, the first one, also called the Feast of the Unleavened Bread.
And we know what that was all about. That was in recognition
of what God had done when he passed over the Israelites, when
he saw the blood of the Paschal lamb that was placed on the doors
of the homes of the Israelites. And the Lord said, when I see
the blood, I'll pass by you. And so once a year, every Jewish
male was to come bring a blood sacrifice and acknowledge God's
mercy and God's grace in the Feast of the Unleavened Bread
or the Passover. The second one was called the
Feast of Weeks, seven weeks after Passover. also known as Pentecost. And so on Pentecost, every male
was to come to Jerusalem and a blood sacrifice had to be made
before they engaged in their harvest. And so at the very beginning
of the harvest time, they were to come and make a sacrifice
and acknowledge the fact that everything that they were about
to harvest was given to them by God. And how significant it
is that the Holy Spirit comes on the day of Pentecost, acknowledging
the fact that the harvest of God's elect, the harvest of men's
souls, that are about to take place and begin taking place
that very day was going to be the work of God's grace. And
so the spirit of God comes on that day. And then the last festival
that was to be celebrated and that was required from Deuteronomy
chapter 16 was the festival of tabernacles or booths. And that was after the harvest.
And the children of Israel were to build makeshift tents or booths
out in the wilderness or out in the yard. And they were to
spend seven days out there, eating their meals and sleeping, acknowledging
the fact that this world is not their home. that this world,
that they are sojourners, they're just passing through. And those
three ceremonies, those three feast days were acknowledging
the work of the Lord Jesus Christ in redemption, the work of the
Holy Spirit in regeneration, and the work of the Father in
glorification. Turn to me to 1 Corinthians 15.
1 Corinthians chapter 15. There's
so much about this that I don't even begin to understand, but
I believe it. But here's the glorification
of the Father. 1 Corinthians chapter 15. beginning
at verse 25, for he must reign. Speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ,
God has given to him all preeminence. Everything is under his feet
and he must reign till he hath put all his enemies under his
feet. Until the Lord Jesus Christ finishes
his work of, of bringing glory to the Father, he's going to
reign. The last enemy that shall be
destroyed is death. So here's the Lord's, he destroyed
that in his resurrection. But for us, we still have an
enemy to deal with, don't we? And that enemy is death. For
he hath put all things under his feet. When he saith all things
are put under him, it is manifest that he, now that's speaking
of the Father, is exempted, which put all things under him. So
what the Lord's telling us is that God the Father is not under
the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ. And we know that the Lord Jesus
Christ is the fullness of the Godhead bodily, We know that
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all equally
possess all the attributes of God. But here the Lord is telling
us about the submission of the Lord Jesus Christ to the Father.
Look what he says in the next verse. And when all things shall
be subdued unto him, when the work of regeneration and the work of
calling out God's elect is complete. Then shall the son also himself
be subject unto him that put all things under him that God
may be all in all. Now I bring that out because
this feast of tabernacles is an acknowledgment of that very
fact. that God the Father ultimately
in the end is going to be glorified as all in all. So here we have
in these three feasts, the glorification of the son, the glorification
of the spirit and ultimately the glorification of the father. Turn back with me to Acts chapter two. Pentecost, the Feast of Weeks,
50 days after Passover, the males of Israel were required to bring
a blood sacrifice and acknowledge all that they were about to receive
in the harvest had come from the Lord. And so on this day
of Pentecost, the Lord, remember, told the children of Israel,
said, you go back into Jerusalem and the Holy Ghost will come
upon you. They didn't know when it was gonna be. They've been waiting
about 10 days now. And, and he will make you my
witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost
parts of the world. And so they're waiting and they're
sitting while they're waiting. They're not, they're not doing
anything to, to try to manipulate or control the things of God.
They're just waiting on the Lord. And on the day of Pentecost,
look what happens. Verse 2, they were, you remember
from last week, they were all in one accord. They were all
in agreement about the gospel of God's grace, about who Christ
was and about what he had accomplished and about who they were and about
how God how God saved sinners. They were all in one accord and
they were all in one place. They were meeting together in
this one place. They had unity of spirit waiting on the Lord. And suddenly, I want us to pause
right there for just a moment. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit is
not going to be controlled. He's not going to be programmed. He's going to come. in his time, according to his
purpose, suddenly, suddenly. Paul speaks of this. He uses
this word in Acts chapter nine, when he tells of being stopped
by God on the road to Damascus. And he said, suddenly a light
came down from heaven. And a voice from heaven spoke
and the Lord suddenly stopped Paul or Saul of Tarsus in his
tracks. And Saul later on goes on to
say that his conversion is a pattern for all. You see, we are dependent
upon the Holy Spirit for our salvation. We're dependent upon
the Spirit to take out the heart of stone and put in a heart of
flesh. We're dependent upon the Spirit to give us eyes to see.
We're dependent upon the Spirit of God to give us faith to believe. But we don't program that. That
happens suddenly. I love it when I hear someone
say, you know, I've been sitting here for years and just suddenly
I heard. Suddenly the Lord did something
for me. I can't explain it. I wasn't looking for it. No man
seeketh after God at any time. He is pleased suddenly to reveal
himself. When it pleased God, Paul later
said, when it pleased God, when it pleased God, who separated
me from my mother's womb. and revealed himself in me."
They were pleased God he did that. In Acts chapter 16, you remember
when Paul and Silas are chained to the wall in a Roman dungeon
in Philippi and the scripture says at about midnight. Oh, by the way, Paul tells us
in Acts chapter 9, and when he recounts his testimony in Acts
chapter 22, he says, and it was about noon when suddenly a light
shined from heaven. It was in the middle of the day.
And now in Acts chapter 16, Paul and Silas are in a prison in
Philippi and they're praising God and the scripture says, and
about midnight. So we've got God coming at one
moment at noon in the middle of the day and another time coming
at midnight in the middle of the night. And just showing us
that and what the scripture says in Acts chapter 16 is suddenly
there was a great earthquake. And the doors of the prison were
opened and the chains of the prisoners all fell off. It just
happened. God, God suddenly did it. So
he's not, he's not controlled by time. He's not controlled
by circumstances. He does things according to his
will and his purpose. And he may do them at noon and
he may do them at midnight, but when he does it, it's going to
be obvious that he did it. And it'll be sudden. Lord, would
you suddenly work on me? Would you make yourself known
to me? Would you send an earthquake and rock loose anything that
I might be trusting in or hoping in other than Christ? Would you open the windows of
heaven and shine a light down like you did Saul of Tarsus and
knock me off my high horse? And cause me to say, what would
you have me to do, Lord? Would you do that for me? Luke chapter two, another place
where this word suddenly is used in the scriptures is in Luke
chapter two, when those humble shepherds, and we don't think
about it often, but these were, these were not the owners of
the sheep. The owners of the sheep don't watch the sheep in
the middle of the night. They go home and go to bed at
night and they've got hirelings that they hire for minimum wage
that stay up all night and wash the sheep. And so the angel came
and suddenly there was with the angel a host of heavenly angels. singing and praising God and
saying glory to God in the highest for on earth, peace, goodwill
towards men spoke to these humble servants suddenly and pointed
them to Christ in all of these incidences. When the spirit of
God comes suddenly, just like he did here on the day of Pentecost,
his work is to point his people to Christ. You remember in Mark chapter
nine when Peter, James, and John were meeting with the Lord Jesus
Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration and all of a sudden the veil
of his humanity was taken away and the radiant glory of his
deity shined forth as the noonday sun so that Peter, James, and
John were driven to the ground holding their eyes and remember
Moses and Elijah were there. And the Lord spoke with Moses,
the law, and Elijah, the prophet, concerning those things which
should be accomplished at his death. And Peter foolishly says,
Lord, let us build three tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses, and
one for Elijah. And then the scripture says,
and suddenly, suddenly, they looked up. and they saw no man
save Jesus only, suddenly. How do I know if the Lord has
suddenly worked in my heart? He has caused me to believe that
the Lord Jesus Christ has satisfied the demands of God's holy law.
The law has been fulfilled. He has caused me to believe that
all the promises of God are yay and amen. All the prophecies
that God has made were fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. And
he has brought me to the place to where suddenly I can see no
man for the hope of my salvation, save Jesus only. He's the only
one I can see. Suddenly here's here's when the
I've titled this middle when the Spirit of God comes down
And we want the Spirit of God to come down And when the Spirit
of God comes down he will come down on his time schedule Now
you notice in our in our in our passage notice and suddenly Is
that we don't program the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit is the
third person of the triune? Godhead he's not going to be
controlled by man. He's not on our time schedule
and That's why it's so important that we take seriously what the
Lord has told us about waiting on him. Don't think you're going
to do something to force the hand of God. Don't think you're
going to provide God something that's going to manipulate him
or make him to do things the way you want them to be done.
The Lord says, they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their
strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall
run and not be weary and walk and not faint. How many times
we're told to wait, wait on God. What was it that came suddenly?
Notice. And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven. There it is. A sound from heaven, the voice
of God has spoken. Has the, has the spirit of God
opened your ears, unstop your ears and giving you a heart to
believe so that when you hear the word of God, you just know
that it's the word of God. You're absolutely convinced of
it. This is not the word of man. This is not the opinion of a
preacher. This is none other than the very word of God, a
voice from heaven has spoken. When John saw the Lord Jesus
Christ in Revelation chapter one, the scripture says, and
his voice was like the sound of many waters. If you've ever
been around a large waterfall, You know that the sound of that
waterfall is so intense that you can't carry on a conversation.
That's all you can hear is the sound of that waterfall. And
that's what the Lord's saying. He's not saying, now, Robert,
you brought out that the Lord, when the Lord speaks like he
did to Elijah, he speaks with a still small voice. And that's
so true. But that still small voice is
so clear. It, it, it's, it drowns out all
other sounds. And so here's when the spirit
of God comes, he comes suddenly and he opens the ear and speaks
from heaven and causes us to believe the word of God. Faith comes by hearing. And hearing comes by the word
of God. The Lord, the Lord causes us
to believe, you know, once a, once a person believes everything
that God says, you know, that that's, that's faith, isn't it? Faith is not. It's not believing
that God's going to do something because I've because I believed
he's going to do it. It's not. It's not forcing the
hand of God to do something that you've that you convinced he's
going to do. Faith is believing everything
that God has said. This is God's word. I believe every word of it. I've heard. And I believe. The Lord has spoken and I believe
what he says, everything he says. So the day of Pentecost has fully
come. They were all in one accord, they were all in one place. The
Spirit of God came suddenly, he didn't come because he was
programmed to come or he was manipulated to come, he came
at his time. But he came according to this
feast day of harvest that was about to
take place, which is the real harvest. The Lord said, say not
that there are yet three months unto harvest. So I say unto you,
the fields are already wide unto harvest. Pray that the Lord of
the harvest will send forth laborers unto the harvest. Oh, there's
a harvest. Is there ever, there ever been
more men that don't know Christ in need of salvation, in need
of the forgiveness of sin? They're everywhere, aren't they? If the Spirit of God comes, he
will cause us to look out into the world and see that the world
is lost and undone. A sound came from heaven. In order
for that sound to be heard, we have to have ears to hear, don't
we? Three times in the book of Revelation, the scripture says,
and let them that have ears to hear, hear what the Spirit saith
unto the churches. We've got to have an ear to hear
what the Spirit says, don't we? Lord, you're going to have to
unstop my ears. You're going to have to give me faith to believe you.
You're going to have to cause me to know. And then in the first
instance in Revelation chapter two, verse 11, he says, and here's
what the Spirit said to the churches, he that overcometh And what is
it to overcome? It's to believe God to the end.
It's to believe God to your dying breath. That's what it is to
overcome. He that overcometh shall not
be hurt by the second death. God gives you ears to hear. When
the spirit of God comes, you don't worry about that second
death. The second death is having having your soul cast into the
eternal lake of fire. And we don't worry about that
second death. The Lord Jesus Christ has quenched
that fire. He's put the heat of that fire
out by absorbing the wrath of God on Calvary's cross. So here the Lord says, he that
hath an ear to hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
and he that overcometh shall not be afraid of or should not
be hurt by the second death. In the second instance, he said,
he that overcometh shall I give to eat of the hidden manna. And
we know who that manna is. The manna that came down from
heaven, that bread that the children of Israel, that the children
of Israel feasted on in the wilderness, that's Christ. And the scripture
says, he that overcometh, I will give to eat of the hidden manna. The world doesn't see Christ.
He's hid from them. But he that has ears to hear
will also have eyes to see. And, uh, and they will feast
on Christ. They will eat of his body and
drink of his blood. They will look to his life for
all their righteousness. And they will look to his sacrificial
death on Calvary's cross as the atonement for their sins, all
their justification before God. And then in the third instance,
he said, he that have ears to hear, let him hear what the spirit
sayeth unto the churches and he that overcometh, I will give
to him the morning star. Now, you know what that morning
star is, don't you? I read somewhere recently where a certain percentage
of of young people didn't know that the sun was a star. And that's the morning star,
the sun that rises. Malachi calls it the sun of righteousness,
which has risen in our hearts. And what does that sun do when
it comes up? I mean, we saw it this morning. It came up a little bit later
this morning than it normally does, didn't it? And what happened?
It was dark when you woke up and all of a sudden the darkness
is pushed away by the light of the sun. I will give to him not
only the hidden manna, but I will give to him the morning star
to drive away the darkness of fear and sin and unbelief and
to lighten his path with the truth of Christ. What happens when the spirit
of God comes down? Look at, look at our text. And
suddenly, suddenly there came a sound. That's the voice of
God. Where'd it come from? It came
from heaven. It came from heaven. It doesn't
come from a man. If all we hear is the voice of a man, we haven't
heard from God. But if through the voice that
through that audible voice, we hear that still small voice,
that thundering sound, the many waters in our hearts that convinces
that drowns out all other sounds, then the spirit of God's come
down. That's what he does. He gives us, he gives us ears
to hear as of a rushing mighty wind. Now, what does the wind
do? What's the wind do? The Lord
said to Nicodemus, said, Nicodemus, you've got to be born of the
spirit. Accept a man be born of the spirit. He cannot see
the kingdom of God. He cannot even begin to perceive
of it. And, and then Nicodemus thought he was talking about
going back into his mother's womb and couldn't understand
that. And so the Lord said, Oh no, Nicodemus said that which
is the flesh is flesh. You were born physically of the
flesh. That's all. That's all it is. The flesh profited
nothing, but that which is of the spirit is spirit. And the
spirit's the spirit that quickeneth. It's the spirit that giveth life.
And the spirit is like the wind. He's like the wind. He listeth
whithersoever he wills. You're not gonna control him,
but when he comes, when he comes, he's gonna bring life. Just as
God breathed life into the nostrils of Adam, so the Lord has to send
his spirit to breathe life into our hearts. And the wind, we're
dependent upon the wind. Have you ever been out in the
middle of the ocean and you get in a doldrum? It's hot. I mean, it's hot and there's
no sight of rain or clouds or water. We're dependent upon the
wind to bring rain. If the wind just ceased to blow
all over the world, weather would stop. And we'd be in an eternal
doldrum of nothing but heat and drought. And so we're dependent
upon these wind currents to bring the showers of God's blessings,
aren't we? And so the Lord, the Lord makes it clear on this day
of Pentecost that when the spirit came, he came as a sound of a
mighty wind bringing the, bringing the rain of God's blessings. And, uh, in Genesis chapter eight,
after the wind had brought a great torrent of rain and flooded the
entire earth. The scripture says in Romans,
in Genesis chapter eight, verse one, that God sent a great east
wind and the waters did assuage. The Lord used that wind to blow
the waters back. What were those waters a symbol
of? They're a symbol of judgment, weren't they? A symbol of God's
wrath and judgment on the earth. And it was the spirit of God
that blew the wind, that blew the waters away so that the land
now becomes dry again and there's a place of life and hope for
the people of God. And then it was that same wind
that the Lord used to divide the Red Sea, didn't he? And give
the children of Israel safe passage across the, on dry ground. was
a great east wind that blew and the waters did wall up on both
sides and uh... if the Lord's going to bring
us across onto dry ground and into safety from the destruction
of the Egyptians he's going to have to blow by his spirit this
is the wind that's blowing now you see we're just as dependent
upon the wind to blow now we're just as needful that God would
suddenly open the windows of heaven and come down and that
he would cause his voice to be heard and that he would blow
back the waters of wrath and that he would open up the rivers
and provide for us by his spirit safe passage from the taskmasters
of the law and of the Egyptians. When the children of Israel were
in the wilderness and all they read him with manna and they
cried out to God for something more than manna. The scripture
says that it was the wind that brought the quail. Uh, no, the,
the wind of the spirit is the one that brings the meat of the
gospel to our hearts. And, uh, Lord, Lord, send your
spirit, send your spirit and power. Do for us what you did.
Here's the thing about it. If our church is not exactly
like this church, then we're not a church. We're not a church. Just talking
to somebody this week and they were talking about some religious
organization they attend. And I just said, well, that's
not a church. That's not a church. They responded by saying, yeah,
but there's a lot of good people that go there. Well, maybe, you
know, but there's not a church. The gospels, what makes a church?
What makes a church? Only one thing makes a church.
The preaching of the gospel. The presence of the Spirit of
God, the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the presence
of those who believe what God has said. That's what makes a
church. And there's only one reason to ever leave a church.
And that's if the gospel ceases to be preached there. That's
the only reason. I read an article, I think, that
Spurgeon wrote this week. He was talking about those people
who are looking for a perfect church. And he said, you know, it's not there.
Don't, you know, you're not going to find it. And if you do find
a perfect church, don't join it because you're going to ruin
it. I had somebody tell a pastor
friend of mine, I can't go to your church because there's too
much sin there. And I told him, I said, well, what you need to
tell that person is good, because we don't need any more. Isn't
that so hypocritical? Yeah, there's sin here. There's
sinners here. But if the gospel's being preached, this is God's
church. This is where God's people are saved. This is where Christ
is lifted up. This is where the Spirit of God
is pleased to make the Lord Jesus Christ known to our hearts. You
see, we're a Pentecostal church. And we're not engaged in all
the foolishness that this Pentecostal group got. But, you know, they've
got the right name because this is the Pentecostal era. We're between those three feasts.
Remember, we're between the Passover, now we're at Pentecost. We're
at the harvest time and we're still harvesting. And one day
we're going to have the feast of booths and tabernacles where
we're going to realize everything in this world was just a tent. That's all it was. When David was delivered from
Saul in 2 Samuel chapter 22, he said that the Lord was seen
upon the the winds, the wings of the wind. The Lord was seen upon the wings
of the wind. When the spirit of God comes,
the Lord will be seen. His voice will be heard. It won't
be by anyone's programming him or trying to force him to do
something. It'll be suddenly. When he comes,
he'll come as a wind. The wind also is seen in the
scriptures as discerning. It's the wind that separates
the chaff from the wheat, isn't it? We're going to look at that
more in the next hour, but this matter of being able to discern
the law from grace, the gospel that saves from the one that
doesn't, that's the work of the wind of God, separating the chaff
from the wheat. And the wind of the Spirit is
also seen in Ephesians chapter 4 when the Lord said, be no more
children tossed about by every wind of doctrine. Don't believe
every spirit. Don't believe every wind that
comes around. Try the spirits and see whether
they be of God. How do I try the spirits? Is
what I'm hearing consistent with what God has said? That's the
only way you're gonna try the spirits. You don't try the spirits
by asking yourself, well, how's it make me feel? A lot of people
go to church based on how it makes them feel. The only question
we have to ask ourselves is, is it true? Is it true? Is it consistent with everything
that God has said in his word about Christ and about salvation? And how else is it? How else
is the spirit seen in chapter and in, in Acts chapter two,
verse two, not only is the mighty rushing wind, um, but also he's
seen as a fire, a fire. Cloven tongues of fire. That
just means that the whole room wasn't on fire. The word cloven
means divided. In other words, there were, there
was tongues of fire over each believer in that room. And what
does that fire represent? Well, what does fire do for us?
A fire gives us light. Fire gives us warmth. Fire is
seen as purifying. Fire is seen as destroying. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed
by fire. The earth will one day be destroyed
by fire. And when the Spirit of God comes,
what does he do? He destroys all our hope. anything
other than Christ. He gives us the light of the
gospel in the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. He purifies us
before God and sanctifies us in Christ. How many times we read in the
scriptures that there was an offering made by fire. Offering made by fire. That's
the real picture of fire, isn't it? The fire of God's wrath that
fell from heaven and was consumed by the sacrifice, the Lord Jesus
Christ. That fire has been put out, it's
been quenched. That's why they who have ears
to hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches and they that
overcome, believe unto the end, have nothing to worry about with
the fire of the second death. One last thing I want you to
see in this verse, look at verse two. And suddenly there came
a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all
the house where they were sitting. Now this Pentecostal church was
not engaged in all sorts of foolishness. They weren't, they were all sitting
down. They were sitting and they were waiting. And what does the
Lord say? Be still and know that I am God. Don't think that by, you remember
when the Lord went over to the Gadarenes and that demoniac was
cutting himself and breaking the chains and running around
like a maniac? That's what people in religion
do. If I can just break the chains of my sin and cut myself enough
and make enough sacrifices, I can somehow, and the Lord saved him. And what's the scripture say?
And he was clothed and in his right mind and sitting. There's the work of grace. There's the work of the spirit
of God. He clothes us in the righteousness of Christ. He gives
us the mind of Christ and he causes us to sit down, sit down. We are seated right now, physically
we're seated, but spiritually we're seated too. We're seated,
the scripture says, in the heavenlies, in Christ right now. The work's
been done. The work is finished. David told Mephibosheth, sit
down here at my table. You'll lead to the king's fair
the rest of your life. Just sit. Just sit. And don't you love what Naomi
