Kingsport Sovereign Grace Church,
located at 905 Yadkin Street in Kingsport, Tennessee, would
like to invite you to listen to a message of sovereign grace
by their pastor, Gabe Stoniker. And now, Pastor Gabe Stoniker. The title of this message is,
Noah, a Type of Christ. I want us to take a look at this
man, Noah, and see how he is a picture of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. And I want us to see why this
event of the flood took place. Let's begin in Genesis chapter
six, and we'll read the first six verses. And it came to pass,
when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters
were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters
of men that they were fair. and they took them wives of all
which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit
shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh,
yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. There were
giants in the earth in those days. And also after that, when
the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they
bare children to them, The same became mighty men which were
of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness
of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of
the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that
he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."
Do you know why God sent the flood? It's because it repented Him
that He had made man. And it grieved Him at His heart. That's why. That's the entire
reason God sent this flood. Now we know the word repent to
mean a change of mind. That's the most common definition
of the word repent, a change of mind. So does that mean that
God changed His mind? It says it repented the Lord
that He had made man. Did God change His mind? Did
God wish He had never made man and change His mind? Malachi
3 verse 6 says, I am the Lord, I change not, therefore you sons
of Jacob are not consumed. And Hebrews 13 verse eight says,
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever. No, he did not change his mind.
So what does that mean? Well, between the words repent
and repentance and repented and repentest, repenteth, repenting,
repentings, All those words, they're in the Bible 112 times. In those 112 times, there are
five different definitions of this word repent. One of them
is a change of mind, that's one of the definitions, but that's
not the definition of this one. One of them is irrevocable. The gifts and the calling of
God are without repentance. They're irrevocable. But that's
not the definition of this one. One of them is to retreat. There
are some accounts here in the Word of God of armies who were
losing the battle, and they repented. They retreated. But that's not
the definition of this one. One of them means to regret,
to care afterwards. God has no regret. God cannot
do wrong. He cannot do anything other than
what's right and absolutely perfect. That is not the meaning of this
one. Here's what it means. To sigh, to breathe strongly,
to comfort self. It grieved him at his heart. Our God is a man. He's a man. Sometimes we think of our God
as being like the Lincoln Memorial, just a concrete statue on a throne,
but that's not our God. Our God is a man. We would never
want to deny that He's God Almighty. God is Spirit. But we would never want to deny
that He's God manifest in the flesh. That's all of our comfort,
you know that? That God was manifest in the
flesh. When we get to glory and we approach
the throne, we're not going to approach a straight-faced statue. We can't have a relationship
with the Lincoln Memorial. Our God is a man with a heart. A heart full of emotion. He said
all throughout the Old Testament, I'm a jealous God, didn't he? I'm a jealous God. He walked
into the temple one time and saw all the money changers profaning
his temple and he got angry. His anger was kindled. Matthew 9 says He saw the multitudes
and He was moved with compassion. He feels pity. Our God gives thanks. He said,
I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You've
hid these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them
unto babes. Psalm 2 says He laughs. He that
sits in the heavens shall laugh. Our God loves. He said, I've
loved you with an everlasting love. He has a heart. He said,
David is a man after my own heart. He cried. When he saw Jerusalem,
he cried. When he was at Lazarus' tomb,
he cried. He's a God of emotion. Isn't
that wonderful? We worship a man. We worship
the God-man. He said, in the day that you
sin against me, you're going to surely die. But in Ezekiel
33, he said, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked. It
grieved him at his heart. But because our God is holy,
He is holy. He is so holy. Because He can do no other than
the law of God. He can do no other than what
is right. Because of that, everything on
this planet had to die. It was all sin. Every imagination
of the thoughts of His heart was only evil continually. Verse 8 right here in Genesis
chapter 6 says, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah found grace. Now our Lord
said, search the scriptures. These are they which testify
of me. Search the scriptures and find out how they point you
to me. That's what we're supposed to
do. And verse 8 says, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the
Lord. Noah, Noah did. Noah. Now when God destroyed this world,
he destroyed the whole world, didn't he? The whole earth, millions
of people. How many people at the time that
he destroyed the world, How many people does it say found grace
in the eyes of the Lord? How many people? In the eyes
of God, Jehovah, how many people? The answer is one. One. But Noah, but Noah, if any mercy was had,
It was only because of one, that's it. Had it not been for Noah,
there would have been no mercy shown. No mercy shown, not to
anything on the face of this earth, had it not been for Noah.
Do you know who the only one that can keep a sinner from suffering
the judgment of God's wrath is? The answer is Christ. There's only one way a sinner
will be spared eternal damnation. It's if that sinner is in Christ. There's only one way a sinner
can find favor with God. That sinner must be in Christ. Christ is the only one. who has
found grace in the eyes of the Lord. He is the only one. This is my beloved Son in whom
I'm well-pleased. He's the one I'm well-pleased
in. You see, we're all sinners. We're the reason God flooded
this earth. Christ is the well-beloved. If
it were not for Christ, No mercy would be shown, none. Now let's
go through a few of these scriptures, a few of these verses and see
Noah as a type of Christ. Look at verse nine, Genesis six,
verse nine. It says, these are the generations
of Noah. Noah was a just man. That's Christ. Noah wasn't just,
Noah was a sinner. There are so many scriptures
right here about Noah that are awful. Terrible. On his own,
he was just a sinner. But in Christ, in Christ, Noah
was a just man. Christ is the just man. And in
Christ as he is, so are we. So it says, Noah was a just man
and perfect in his generations. Can that be said about anybody
but Jesus Christ? Pilate said, I can find no fault
in Him. None. Verse 9 says, And Noah
walked with God. In the beginning was the Word.
The Word was with God. The Word was God. The Lord Jesus
Christ walked with God because the Lord Jesus Christ was God.
Verse 13 says, God said unto Noah he communed
all this to Noah God said unto Noah the end of all flesh has
come before me for the earth is filled with violence through
them and Behold, I will destroy them with the earth Verse 14. He said make thee an ark You
see that make thee an You're going to have to do the work.
Make thee an ark. Verse 14 says, rooms shalt thou
make. You're going to have to prepare
the place. Verse 14 says, you're going to
have to pitch it within and without with pitch. We'll see what that
means in just a minute. Verse 18, he said, with thee
will I establish my covenant, with thee. Who is God's covenant
with? It's with Christ. God didn't
say, well, I'm gonna make a covenant with a dead, vile, wicked sinner.
If you will, then I will, I'll make a covenant with you. No,
he didn't say that. A sinner can't keep any side
of a covenant. God's covenant is in Christ. God said to the Lord Jesus Christ,
if you will die for their sins, I will receive them in you, in
your blood. His covenant was with Christ. His covenant is in Christ. Verse 19 says, and of every living
thing, of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the
ark to keep them alive with thee." You're going to bring them. You're
going to have to bring them. You're going to keep them alive.
Verse 21, and take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten. And thou shalt gather it to thee,
and it shall be for food for thee and for them. You're going
to provide for them. You're going to bring them, they're
going to be safe in you and you're going to provide for them. Verse
22, thus did Noah according to all that God commanded him, so
did he. Now I've always seen pictures,
children's pictures, different pictures of Noah's ark, the scene
of Noah's ark. And you always see Noah and you
see Shem and Ham and Japheth and you see a framework of the
ark. And you see a couple of men on
each side of a saw, sawing a big tree trunk, chiseling a beam
out of it. And I cannot imagine Noah building
this ark without any help. I just can't imagine that. This
ark was huge. But as a type of Christ, as a
type of the Lord Jesus Christ, nowhere in this book does it
say that anyone helped Noah build this ark. From all that we have
been told by God, Noah built this ark alone. Alone. If you have your Bibles
open, turn with me to Hebrews chapter 11 and look at verse
7. It says, by faith, Noah being
warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared
an ark, to the saving of his house, by the which he condemned
the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by
faith." That's Christ. Christ did this work alone. Christ secured salvation alone. Alone. Back over in Genesis. This time chapter 7, Genesis
chapter 7 verse 1 says, And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou
and all thy house into the ark, for thee have I seen righteous
before me in this generation. Can we not hear the father talking
directly to his son? Come thou and all thy house."
Over in Isaiah chapter 6, verse 1, it says, in the year that
King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne,
high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. His train,
you know what that is? It's all those who are riding
His coattails. It's all those who are hiding
under His garment, robed with His own righteousness. God the
Father says, welcome in my son. And all those who are with Him,
all those who are in Him, they're welcome too. Right here in Genesis
chapter 7 verse 13 says, In the self same day entered Noah, and
Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife,
and the three wives of his sons with them into the ark. They
and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their
kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth
after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of
every sort, and they went in unto Noah. They went in unto
Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the
breath of life." They went in unto Noah. If a sinner is going
to enter in, he has to come to Christ. He has to come to Christ. Verse 23 says, and every living
substance was destroyed. which was upon the face of the
ground. Both man and cattle and the creeping things and the fowl
of heaven and they were destroyed from the earth and Noah only,
Noah only remained alive and they that were with him in the
ark." Noah only. and they that were with him.
He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son
of God hath not life. What is a sinner's hope? What's
our hope? Look at chapter eight, verse
one. It says, and God remembered Noah. My only hope is that God remembers
Christ. That's my only hope. My only
hope is that when God sees me, God sees Christ in me. God sees
what Christ has done for me. As soon as He looks on me, my
only hope is going to be to start crying, Christ, Christ. When I stand before that judgment
throne, the only plead I'll have is Christ, Christ alone, His
blood alone, that's it. I just want to be found in Christ.
Chapter 8, verse 6 says, And it came to pass at the end of
forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he
had made. Let there be light. Let there
be light. The day star has risen. God's wrath is over. All those
inside that ark are safe. Let there be light. The day star
has risen with healing in His wings. Verse 13 says, and it
came to pass in the 600th and first year, in the first month,
the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off
the earth and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked
and behold, the face of the ground was dry. The veil was rent, removed
the covering. remove the covering, see Him
as He is. Because of what Christ endured
for us, our ark, the one that we suffered God's wrath inside,
because that wrath is over and because of what we are now in
Him, that cover is going to be removed. We're going to see Him
as He is. Verse 20 says, And Noah builded
an altar unto the Lord, and took of every clean beast and of every
clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the
Lord smelled a sweet savor. And the Lord said in his heart,
I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake. For
the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth, neither
will I again smite any more everything living as I have done." Oh, the
sweet smelling savor of Christ. He paid it all. He paid it all. When God sees Christ on that
altar, Noah built the altar and Noah made the sacrifice. And Christ Himself is our High
Priest. He offers the sacrifice. And
Christ was the sacrifice. And Christ Himself, our sacrifice,
is such a sweet-smelling savor to God. Satisfied. Chapter 9, verse 1 says, And
God blessed Noah and his sons. He blessed Noah and his sons.
Verse 8 says, And God spake unto Noah and to his sons with him,
saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you and with
your seed after you. How shall we not, with him, also
freely receive all things. He has made us to be joint heirs,
you know that? My covenant is with you and your
seed. Everything that He inherits,
we inherit. All things. Verse 11 says, God said, and
I will establish my covenant with you. Neither shall all flesh
be cut off anymore by the waters of a flood. Neither shall there
any more be a flood to destroy the earth." And God said, this
is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you
and every living creature that is with you for perpetual generations. I do set my bow in the cloud
and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the
earth. No more wrath. Neither shall all flesh be cut
off any more by waters, no more wrath. And I'm giving you a token
of this covenant. I'm making a covenant and I'm
giving you a token of it. It's a rainbow. Every time we
see that rainbow in the sky, we need to be reminded of God's
mercy in Christ, our ark. But there is a place that we
are physically going to see this rainbow. A place in the heavens,
you know where that is? Look over at Revelation 4 with
me. Revelation chapter 4 verse 1, it says, After this I looked,
and behold, a door was opened in heaven. And the first voice
which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me.
which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which
must be hereafter. They must be. And immediately
I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and
one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon
like a jasper and a sardine stone. Now a jasper stone is clear as
crystal, perfect, pure, holy, spotless. And a sardine stone
is ruby red, blood, blood. A lamb as it had been slain,
seated on his throne. That's Christ our Lord. And he
that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone,
and there was a rainbow round about the throne." There was a rainbow round about
the throne in sight like unto an emerald. There's a rainbow
around the throne of God. And every time we approach that
throne, we're going to see a token. You know that? A reminder. We
now have access to approach the throne of God with boldness. That's what Hebrews 4 says. We
have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling
of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we
are, yet without sin. Christ our ark suffered God's
wrath. When that rain came down, It
beat on that ark. Christ felt the wrath and the
judgment of God because of the sins that he bore on his body
for his people. We have not a high priest which
cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in
all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us
therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may
obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Every single
time we approach that throne, we're gonna see a token. We're
going to see a reminder. This is a throne of grace. You
cannot be condemned. It's Christ that died. Isn't
that good news? Until next Sunday morning, may
