Alright, turn with me back to
Genesis chapter 5. Here in Genesis chapter 5, There are 13 names mentioned. We read 13 different names. And we're going to look at one
of them specifically this morning. Enoch. But before we do, I want us to
look at the amazing glory of this word. And what I'm hoping
is that we can Just for one quick second, just enter into how wonderful
this word is. Uh, not get too hung up on any
one definition, but just listen to the message. It'll take just
one quick second and listen to the message of Genesis chapter
five. In these 13 names, our God has
given us the gospel. in these 13 glorious names. All
right, I'm going to give you their definitions. Adam is the very first one that
was named. His name means ruddy, to flush
and show blood. That's what his name means, blood. Seth means appointed and it means
substitution. Enos means mortal man, frail,
feeble. Canaan means fixed dwelling. Mahalaleel means praise of God,
glory. Jared means to descend, to go
downward, to abundantly bring down. Enoch means to discipline,
to teach, to narrow one's self to death. Methuselah means man
of a spear, missile of attack, a branch, a weapon. Lamech means made low, made poor. Starting to see anything in this?
Noah means rest, comfort, quiet. Shem means name, position, honor,
authority, lofty, seated. Ham means hot, to be hot, to
inflame self, have heat, wax hot, warm at. Japheth means to open, made roomy,
made enlarged. That's the gospel. Now here's
what all that just said. Adam sinned. This whole thing
started because of sin. And there is only one remedy
for sin and that's blood. That's it. One thing, blood. So there was appointed a substitute for mortal man, for frail and
feeble mortal man, so that he might have a fixed dwelling. And every bit of this was to
the praise and glory of God. So Christ descended. He came
down. He abundantly brought himself
down. And he was obedient. He was disciplined. He was taught, obedient unto
death. But the Lord is a man of war.
A mighty and righteous branch. And he made himself poor. His victory was making himself
poor that we might be made rich. Rich in his death. He rested
in that grave. And his rest is our rest. His
quietness is our quietness. That's our comfort. And because
of that battle, because of that victory, Because he arose from
that grave, he has been given a name above every name. He is seated in the lofty place
at the right hand of the majesty on high. He has been given all
honor, all authority, and he is the judge of this earth. He
will wax hot against sin, but in him Every mere mortal who
he became the substitute for, in him, every one of them has
been made enlarged. The gates of heaven are going
to open wide. That's the gospel. That's the gospel. That's the
glorious gospel of who Christ is and what he has done and where
he is now in Genesis chapter 5. I love this word. I just love
this word, the glory of this word. Well, I want us to look
at one of these names. One name in particular, his name
is Enoch. Charles Spurgeon said about the
beginning of Genesis right here, he said, Abel taught the need
of approaching the Lord with a sacrifice. That's what Abel
taught us. The need of atonement by blood.
Then Seth and Enos taught men the necessity of a distinct avowal,
that means confession, of their faith in the Lord and the need
of assembling for his worship. For we read concerning the days
of Enos and Seth, then began men to call upon the name of
the Lord. He said, then came Enoch. whose life went beyond
the reception and confession of the atonement, for he set
before men the great truth of communion with God." Communion
with God. He displayed in his life the
relation of a believer to the Most High and showed how near
the living God condescends to be with his own children. He
said, we've seen the way with Abel. We have confessed the truth
with Seth. Now let us know the life with
Enoch. The way, the truth, the life.
Look at verse 22. Genesis 5, 22. It says, And Enoch
walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years
and begat sons and daughters And all the days of Enoch were
three hundred, sixty, and five years. And Enoch walked with
God, and he was not, for God took him." Enoch walked with
God. I cannot tell you how badly I
want that. I want that. I really do. Enoch walked with
God. Genesis chapter 6 verse 9 ends
by saying, Noah walked with God. Noah did. Adam walked with God
in the garden. God walked and talked with Adam. My hope is to one day, one day
soon, Walk around glory with Jesus Christ. That's my hope. I want to walk with God. That's my hope. The Psalm says, walk about Zion. I want to do that with God himself.
Can you imagine how glorious that will be? I thought about whenever his
disciples were going to walk around Jerusalem with him and
show him all the temple and the buildings, how glorious they
were. And he said, yeah, he said, they're all going to be torn
down. But can you imagine getting to glory and seeing the things
that God has prepared for them that love him walking with the
Lord as he shows us his creation? I want to walk with God. I want
to be called the friend of God. That's what I desire. How does
a man walk with God? If it's possible, I want to begin
doing that right now. Right now. Now, not much has
been written about Enoch. Not much at all. We have a lot
about Abraham and a lot about David and different men, but
not about Enoch. But he's mentioned in three places
here in the scripture. Genesis 5. Hebrews 11 and the
book of Jude, those three places. And from these three places,
maybe we can learn a little bit about his life and about his
walk. Okay. Turn with me over to Hebrews
11. Hebrews 11 verse 5 says, By faith Enoch was translated
that he should not see death and was not found because God
had translated him. For before his translation he
had this testimony that he pleased God. Now the first thing we can
see is this. Before his translation, before
he was taken, before God took him, while he was here on this
earth, he pleased God. That's scary. He pleased God. He had to have pleased God. He had to. The Lord God will
not walk with a man that he's not pleased with. He's not going
to do that. He said, how can two walk together except they
be agreed. And if a man or a woman is going
to walk with God, the first thing is God has to be pleased with
them. Now Enoch was a center. All right. He was a center just
like everybody else. He was a fallen sinner in Adam, just like everybody
else. So by nature, he was not pleasing
to God. Nothing about him was pleasing
to God. By nature, he stunk in the nostrils
of God. He was enmity. That means the
enemy. He was a vile, wicked rebel.
That's all he was by nature. But something made him pleasing
to God. I really want to know what that
is. Even when he was dead in sins, something made God's rich
mercy love him. Something made God raise him
up to sit together in heavenly places with Christ. What was
it? What was it? Look at the beginning
of verse five right here in Hebrews 11. It says. By faith. By faith. Look at verse six,
it says, but without faith, it is impossible to please him. For he that cometh to God must
believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently
seek him. By grace are you saved through
faith, right? Enoch believed God. He believed
God. He believed on the Lord Jesus
Christ. And he was counted unto him for
righteousness. Without Christ, it is impossible to please God. It's just impossible. How does
a man walk with God? He clings to Jesus Christ. by
faith. If that had said that Enoch pleased
God because of something he did, something in his character, something
about him, some talent that he had, some work that he did, that
would have scared us to death. Because I don't have it. I just
don't have it. The song says, when I look within,
all is dark and vain and vile. But it doesn't say that. It says,
God's gift of faith that caused him to cling to Christ pleased
God. That's the same faith that he's
given to you and me. Very same faith. Now, if I want
to walk with God, I must completely believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
That's the first thing. If I want to walk with God, I
must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians 2 says, As
you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in
Him. If I'm going to walk with God,
I must be walking in Christ. That's it. My flesh wants to
look to me to please God. My flesh gets me down because
I don't see anything in me that pleases God. Faith looks to Christ. Faith stops me from looking to
myself and it causes me to look to Christ. That's what faith
does. Hebrews 11 verse 5 says, By faith Enoch was translated
that he should not see death and was not found because God
had translated him. For before his translation he
had this testimony that he pleased God. But without faith it is
impossible to please him. For he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him. That tells us something about
Enoch's faith. Enoch believed that he is. Now, if the Lord
will let me enter in to this by faith, this will bless my
heart. This will bless my heart. I hope
he makes me ready. I'm ready. Okay. Enoch believed number one. He is. He is. You know what that means? He is. Is he? He is. He is. Enoch believed he is a
rewarder. He's a rewarder. Of them that diligently seek
him. Him. Enoch didn't just believe a bunch
of facts. Enoch believed him. You know the difference? Enoch
didn't just have a rule of life that he lived by. Oh, that man
walks with God. He didn't just have a rule of
life, a moral rule of life that he lived by. This wasn't just in his head. This was in his heart. This thing
was real to him. He was real. Enoch didn't just think about
God. He didn't just argue with men
about God. He didn't just read about God. He didn't just talk about God. He walked with God. He walked with God. His God. He didn't just walk with the
God. He walked with His God. His God. My God. This walk was as real to Him
as any walk with any man. If you and I set out down Center
Street, That's how real it was. He realized that God was with
him. You know what a blessing that
realization is. I lose it all the time, and if
God in mercy sends it back, I think, wow, what a blessing. Emmanuel. God is with us. If God be for
us, who can be against us? He believed God when God said,
You are my friend. He believed God. Without faith,
it's impossible to please Him. You know why God translated Him?
He was pleased. He believed God. The promises
in God's Word that have been revealed to us by faith, Enoch
laid hold of them. You know how we would love to
believe them, but what if Enoch laid hold of them? He looked to them. He handled
them. He tasted them in his soul. They
were sweet. With his God-given eyes of faith,
Enoch saw the invisible one. And he's beautiful. Enoch saw him to be his true
friend. One that sticketh closer than
a brother. Enoch talked with his friend
daily. Sometimes we have a particular
person that we call our best friend. Oh, he's my best friend. We've got a lot of good acquaintances. I'm sure you all have really
good acquaintances, but there's usually one person that you just
tell everything to. You just tell it all. You don't
hold anything back from them. When you need advice, you call
them. Sometimes you talk to them almost every day, every single
day. Enoch walked with God. He walked with God. I want to
learn this. I can't tell you how badly I
want this. He told him everything. He told
him everything. He didn't hold anything back
from him. He called on him every day. He
walked with God. Our God has told us His secret
things. You know that? Things that He
only reveals to those that fear Him. Enoch feared Him. He feared Him. It was a humble
walk. It says, walked with God. It doesn't say God walked with
him, although in his mercy he does, because we're dead. If
he didn't come walk with us, we couldn't walk at all. But
it says he walked with God. It was a humble walk. It doesn't say God was Enoch's
co-pilot. Man, is there a difference. It doesn't say God was a big
influence in Enoch's life. No, it says Enoch walked with
God. He walked with God. Wherever you go, that's where
I want to go. Whatever you do, that's what I want to do. Fork
in the road, Lord, which way would you take me? He followed him. He leadeth me. Like a father leads a child. Enoch was confident if a rough
patch comes, my father is going to pick me up and carry me over
it. He walked with God. You understand the difference? Me and Jesus have a good thing
going. He walked with God. I'm walking with God. Is God
going to get me through this? I'm walking with God, aren't
I? Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou
art with me. He walked with God. Enoch was a family man. Genesis
said he begat sons and daughters for 365 years. Everybody else
was in the eights, nine hundreds. His life was half of their life.
It struck me that our calendar has 365 days. His life represents
our walk on this earth, you know. He was a family man, though.
He had a lot of responsibility. He didn't just have time to sit
around all day and spiritualize. He had responsibilities. He had
a full house. If you get more than one child,
it's going to be a crazy and loud house. He lived in a very evil and corrupt
time. He lived just a few generations
before God wiped the earth away with a flood. When the wickedness of man was
great, that's what it says. The world was full of mockers,
haters of God's word. Enoch was vexed with it. That's
how he lived his life, vexed. You know how I know that? He
preached against it. Turn over to Jude 14. Jude 14 says, And Enoch also, the seventh from
Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with
ten thousand of his saints to execute judgment upon all and
to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly
deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard
speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him." That
man was direct. Life was not easy for this man. His world was surrounded by wickedness. In his day, very few people loved
God. All of God's people have hindrances,
all of them. Hindrances in the time that we
live in, the people that we're surrounded by. But do you know what every bit of
that causes a believer to want to do? Walk with God. Walk with God. What was the end
of Enoch's walk? Genesis said he was not. He was not. It doesn't say he
died. He believed God. Now, all those
men, you hear how much it said, and he died, and he died, and
he died. And Hebrews 11 said Enoch had
faith, God-given faith, and he walked with God and he was not. It doesn't say he died. He was just not, not here. Just not here. Gone from the
earth. He was there. Gone from here, but there. It's
where God translated. We went to this funeral visitation
yesterday, Brother Charles Ross. There was that man's body, precious
body. And I had this message in my
mind, and I was thinking, well, he's just not here. He's there. That body's laying there, not
him. It's his body, but it's not him. He's been translated. God translated him. He was changed
in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. Corruption put on
incorruption. Mortality put on immortality. He went from walking by faith
to walking by sight. walking by sight. That fast. Enoch, this man, this
precious man, he was living life, doing everything that he does,
walking down the dirt and gravel roads of Israel, wherever he
was, and all of the sudden, one foot stepped into glory. Do you know that's how it's going
to be for us? Amazing. And there's my Lord. I am walking with God. If a man walks with God, he'll
never die. I'm not a fan of death at all. And if a man walks with God,
he will never die. That's what God has said. Hebrews
11 said he was not found. That's what it said. He was not
found. What that means is he was missed. They went looking
for him. When Elijah was carried up, 50
men went searching for him. They missed him. They loved him. And we love God's people. We
love our brethren. And when He takes them, we miss
them. We really do. We miss them. But we have comfort
in the fact that they're not dead. They're just not here. They're just not here. They are
walking with God. I want that. I need Christ. You know that? I need the gospel of Genesis
5. I need His blood. I need that
appointed substitute to come make a fixed dwelling for me.
I need His God-given faith to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. I want this to become real to
me. I want to be the friend of God. I want Him to translate all of
us. I want all of us to be translated
into His presence and I want to walk with God with all of
you. I really do. May God allow us to walk with
Him.
