You may wonder, if you didn't
look at the title of this morning's message, you may wonder what
we're going to look at here in this chapter. But there's much to be seen,
just a few verses. Genesis chapter five, this is a story, there's a story
in this chapter of a man who believed God. He didn't just believe in God, he
believed in God. And he walked with God, and I believe he taught his children
about his God, a man named Enoch, down in the middle of the chapter
there, a man named Enoch. We're going to look at him in
a moment, but first I want you to notice One very important
thing that we see throughout this whole chapter. Look at verse
five. It says, All the days of Adam
were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died. Verse eight. All the days of Seth were nine
hundred and twelve years, and he died. Verse eleven. All the
days of Enos were nine hundred and five years, and he died. Verse fourteen. All the days
of Canaan were nine hundred and ten years and he died verse seventeen
all the days of Mahalia were eight hundred ninety five years
and he died verse twenty all the days of Jared were nine hundred
sixty two years and he died verse twenty seven all the days of
Methuselah were nine hundred sixty nine years and he died
verse thirty one all the days of Lamech were seven hundred
77 years and he died. Did you notice what it said in
each one of those verses? Did you catch it? And he died. In spite of living, Methuselah
is the oldest one recorded here, 969 years. Nearly a thousand years this
man lived on the earth. But he died. Yet he died. Every one of these
people but one died. And everybody in here, perhaps,
if the Lord doesn't come first, will die. There's several scriptures
that came to my mind when I read this, several scriptures. The
first one was when our Lord said, What shall it profit a man to
gain the whole world and lose his soul? Can you imagine how
much you could gain in the course of a thousand years? Can you imagine what you would
accumulate in the course of a thousand years? What would it profit a
thousand years? Wouldn't the people in our generation
love to live a thousand years? They're so caught up with this
world. I don't. I'm kind of like our brother
who said, I can't even stand the thought of living another
thirty more years with myself. But nine hundred and some years.
Well, what would it profit if you lived that long and accumulated
everything you could and died? And I also thought of this scripture
in James chapter 4 verse 14. He says, What is your life? How many years are we promised
from the scripture? How many years is modern man
promised from the scripture? How many? Three score and ten. Seventy years. Next to Methuselah. What is your
life, Stan Anderson? It's a day for it. I bet Methuselah,
when he got 969 years old, he thought, where have the last
968 gone? I'm serious. What is your life? 70 years. Our oldest lady in here is 80
some years old. It's a vapor in the virgin. You
can probably remember when you were like one of these little
girls sitting here. What is your life? It's a vapor that appears
for a little time, 70 years. A little time. And then it vanishes
away. Also thought of this scripture,
Deuteronomy 32, 29. It says this, Oh, that they were
wise and would consider their latter end. And I thought of
Ecclesiastes 12 verse 5, which says, Man goeth to his long home. Long home. 1995. Unbelievable. If the Lord does not come, it
will be the year 2000. That's just inconceivable, isn't
it? What is your life? It's a vapor. And one of these days, you're
going to be in a coffin. It's gone. Then what matters? One thing is needful. That's
the last verse of Scripture that comes to my mind. One thing is
important. There's one thing needful. One
thing we need while we're on this planet. We need to know
Him. We need to know God whom we must
face someday and either live with or without. Right? Man was created by God, for God,
to glorify God, to know God, to enjoy God, to walk Now here's a story here in Genesis
5 of a man who did, who knew God
and walked with God, and one day he just walked into heaven.
All right, let's read it. Genesis 5, look at verse 21 through
24. And Enoch lived sixty-five years
and begat Methuselah. And Enoch walked with God after
he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. And all the days of Enoch were
three hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with
God, and he was not, for that is, he vanished. But God took
him. And five things I want you to
notice about this man Enoch. If you're taking notes, number
one is look at the man Enoch. The man Enoch. Number two, look
at the world of Enoch. The world of Enoch. Number three,
the walk of Enoch. Number four, the talk of Enoch. And number five, the end of Enoch. First thing I want you to notice
about this man Enoch is just that. He's just a man. He's just a man. There's nothing
written here that says he was any different than anybody else
does. It doesn't say Enoch dressed a certain way. It doesn't say
Enoch did this or did that. or had this, or didn't have that,
or this way or that way, or didn't do this, or didn't do that. It
doesn't say any of that, does it? It does not qualify or clarify
the character of Enoch, does it? It just says he was a man,
a man. The only thing it says about
Enoch is he walked with God, doesn't it? He was just a man. That means he was flesh. flesh
and bones, flesh and blood, like anybody here. Just a man, just
like John Davis there, and Dan Topp, and Ed Barrett. Just a
man. Just a man. No different than anybody else.
That which is flesh is flesh. Enoch was flesh. And every son
of Adam. Did you notice that in verse
1? It says it. No, verse 3. Adam lived 130 years and begat
a son. It's the only time it says it
in this chapter. In his own likeness, after his image, it makes sure
that we know that the rest of Adam's seed is just like him. You notice that, Steve? After
his image, in his likeness, he's just like him. All Adam's sons,
from here on out, are just like Adam. What's that? How's that? Adam was a sinner. So were all
his sons and his grandsons. And that means Enoch, too. A
sinful man. A sinful man. That's what Enoch
was. Just a man. Not superman, but
a sinful man. And he was a man with a home.
I don't care what the Catholic priests do and say, this was
a man who was married. He was a married man. There's
no sin in that. He was a married man with a family,
a job. You live 365 years, you better
earn some money. You beget sons and daughters,
and they had hundreds of them. You better have a little money.
You better have a job. He had a job. He had responsibility. Just a man. Just a man. He was a sinful man, as I said,
a sinful man. The scripture says, all have
sinned, and none righteous, no, not one. This man was not better
than anybody else. He's just a man. Because the scripture says that
in Romans 3, does it not? Romans 3, Psalm 14, Psalm 53,
none righteous, no, not one. There's none that doeth good,
no not one. Psalm 14 says they all together
become filthy. Right? That's what the scripture
says. All have sinned and come short
of the glory of God. This man was a sinner and it
said, did you notice it said that he didn't start walking
with God until after he was 65 years old. Doesn't it say that? Verse 22,
Enoch walked with God after. He begat Methuselah. He may have
before him, but it seems that he didn't. He walked with God
after. He's a sinner. That's what I'm
trying to say. Enoch was a sinner, yet he was
a righteous man. He was made righteous. That's
the only way anybody's righteous. They're made righteous. They're
made righteous by the Lord His righteousness. of God was he
in Christ Jesus who was made unto him righteousness. Right? He had a Lord who was his righteousness. Surely this man, from Isaiah
45, 24, surely this man Enoch said, In the Lord have I righteousness,
his dream. He was a sinner, yet he was a
righteous man. There's no contradiction. That's
just the way it is. He was righteous. He was made
righteous. We're going to look at that in a moment. All right?
Let's look at the world that Enoch lived in. The world that
Enoch lived in. Let's look at it. Look at chapter
6, verse 5. It says, And God saw that the
wickedness of man was great in the earth, that every imagination
of the thoughts, or that is the whole imagination, And the thoughts of his heart
was only evil. Only evil. Continually. Every day. From his waking hours
to his—before he went to bed. Only evil. Continually. Look at verse eleven and twelve.
The earth was corrupt before God. The earth was filled with
violence. God looked upon the earth, and
behold, it was corrupt all flesh. had corrupted his way on the
earth. It sounds like 1995, doesn't
it? It is. It's no different. It never has been any different.
It's always been the same. This is the way it was in Enoch's
day—a sinful, corrupt, violent, wicked world. That's what it
was. That's the world he lived in.
Look at verse four. Look at verse 4 in chapter 6.
It says there were giants in the earth in those days. Men are becoming giants, aren't
they? Again, aren't they? There ain't no midgets being
born like me anymore. They're becoming giants. Look
at verse 2. It says the sons of God saw the
daughters of men were fair, beautiful women, big men. big men and beautiful
women who prided themselves, I'm sure,
who prided themselves in the fact that they could slam dunk
a basketball. If they played it, they'd have prided in it. Whatever it was they did, they
prided themselves in being the biggest, the strongest, the fastest,
the prettiest. They gloried in their strength.
They gloried in their beauty. Count on it. They did. It was
a materialistic world. Matthew 24, our Lord said in
Matthew 24, he said as in the days of Noah when they were drinking
and eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage. He doesn't say there's anything
wrong with those things. You've got to eat, you've got to drink.
Our Lord blessed marriage. He said, The marriage is honorable
in all, the bed undefiled, holy. Marriage is holy. There's nothing
wrong with marrying and giving in marriage. Nothing wrong with
these things. But the materialism is in this. To be materialistic is this.
It's to be taken up with these things and forget God. And that's
what our Lord said of the day of Noah, and that's what is said
today. They were eating and drinking, marrying in marriage, giving
in marriage, and knew not till the flood came. Knew not what? Knew not God. Romans 1 says they
did not like to retain God and all their knowledge. So I'm certain,
it says, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be. I'm certain
these were an intelligent people. Adam was brilliant. Brilliant. Sammy, he passed it down to his
posterity. They were smart. They weren't
cavemen. They weren't monkeys living in
caves. They were creating the image of God, the image of Adam. They were intelligent, upright
creatures. Sinful, though they were. Yet
they were—look at chapter 4. Look back there. Chapter 4, verse
20. It says they dwelled in tents,
they were farmers. Verse 21, they created instruments, handled
the harp and the organ. They were artistic, musical,
intelligent, industrious. Verse 22, instructors of every
artificer and brass and iron. These were brilliant men and
women, talented people, beautiful, intelligent, Talented men and
women, and they walked this planet for hundreds of years. Imagine
the knowledge you would accumulate in hundreds of years. How smart,
how intelligent a man would become in the course of hundreds of
years. They walked this planet for hundreds of years and knew
many things, but they didn't know God. They walked the planet a long
time, but didn't walk with God. That was the day, and shortly
after Enoch, Noah came along, and the story of the flood. We'll look into that next week.
That was the day that Enoch lived in, a day just like ours, no
different. He lived in a sinful, vile, corrupt
planet of people who didn't care a flip about God Almighty. Beautiful,
intelligent, prided themselves in those things and didn't know
God. But this man did. This man did. Why? Who made him to differ? Did you catch the answer in the
question? It's not what made him to differ.
It's who made him to differ. Just like his grandson Noah,
this man found grace. in the eyes of the Lord. By grace
he was saved. Let's look at his walk now. And
the word walk means his life. That's what it means, his life,
or how he lived. And the first thing, again, I
want you to notice is that Enoch walks like a man. Walked like a man. Why? Because he was a man. You've got to be, that which
is flesh is flesh. We're subject to the flesh. We're
subject to the inferred. We're men of like passions, right? And it was said of Elijah, perhaps
the greatest prophet who ever lived, Elijah, they called the
Lord Elijah. They thought he was Elijah because
Elijah was the greatest man to walk the planet since that time,
before that time. Elijah was a man of like passions
as we are. He's a man that had the same
lust, the same thoughts, the same desire, the same sins. A
man. Enoch walked like a man. I want
to keep stressing that because this religious self-righteous
generation would have us to think that Noah and Enoch and apostles
and we can live some separated, sanctified, holier-than-thou
life. No. not only by his grace and
by his Spirit, not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit,
saith the Lord, only by his grace. Any man who does not do the worst
of sins, who is not the worst of sinners, is so because of
the restraining grace of God. He walked like a man. He was
a man. He looked like a man. He didn't look any different
than any other man. He was just a man. Our Lord didn't look.
The Son of God became flesh, and He didn't look any different
than any other man. He didn't wear His hair differently.
He didn't wear His beard any differently. He didn't wear His
clothes any differently. Is there anything to indicate that in
the Scripture, that our Lord wore black clothing to separate Himself? Oh, He was
separate from sinners, wasn't He? Oh, he was above sinners,
wasn't he? Huh? He was without sin, wasn't
he? But nobody noticed it on the outside. Oh, yes, his works
proved it. His voice proved it. His speech
betrayed him. But not his appearance, he said.
He looked like and walked like a man. Right? Yeah, that's right. Walked like
a man. Walked out, ain't it? Walked
like a man. He lived as a man. He walked
to work, walked to town, walked out in the field. But what's
so different about his walk then? It's who he was walking with.
There it is. That's the whole difference in
a big nutshell. It's who he walked with. He always
was walking with somebody. That's what made his walk different.
The scripture says here in Genesis 5 that Enoch walked with God. He walked with God. All right. What does that mean? He walked
with God. And I've already said that he
lived like a man. He was a man. He had a home, had a family,
had a job. He had to work his job. He didn't live in a cave
somewhere, a monastery somewhere. He didn't. He had a home and
a family. If any man provide not for his
own, he's worse than an infidel. This man had to provide for his
family. He didn't leave his family and go off and live a secluded
life. He walked and lived and worked like a man. Right? Well, how did he walk with God
then? How did he walk with God? Well, turn over to Hebrews chapter
11. It tells us over here, in Hebrews 11, the Apostle Paul
tells us, he clarifies what this means, how Enoch walked. All right? He walked. I'll tell you how he walked.
The Scripture says, we walk by faith. and not by sight. Enoch walked with God by faith. By faith. Enoch never saw God. Oh, no. Uh-uh. Enoch never saw God. God's a
spirit. Enoch was flesh. No man has seen
God at any time, our Lord said, did he? Enoch never saw God.
There's nothing to tell us, John, that God ever spoke to Enoch
out loud. Enoch probably never heard an audible voice from heaven,
right? Enoch never saw God, but he walked
with God, didn't he? That's what it said. Enoch never
heard God's voice, but he believed God, didn't he? He believed God. How? The same way you and I are
going to have to, by faith. Look at Hebrews 10 verse 38. Look at Hebrews 10 verse 38.
It says, Now the just shall live by faith or walk by faith. Same word. Live or walk, shall
exist, live before God, walk with God by faith. Read on down. Hebrews 11 verse
5. By faith Enoch was translated that he
should not see death or transformed into another world, and was not
found or disappeared because God had translated him, transformed
him. And before his translation, he
had this testimony that he pleased God. How? How did he please God? in the flesh, no man can please
God, the scripture said, doesn't it? Doesn't it say that? Verse six has the answer. But, now he says, but, now wait
a minute, he makes sure we know that Enoch was not special, or
holier than thou, necessarily. He pleased God, but, now, but,
without faith, It is impossible to please God. He that cometh
to God, or walketh with God, must believe that he is, that
he is God, that he, that man, is a sinner, that he, that Christ,
is the only way to God. And that God is the rewarder
of them that diligently seek him. Only those who from the
heart truly seek him. By faith, Enoch walked with God. By faith. Turn over, and Enoch
was a just man. Turn over to Galatians chapter
two. Galatians chapter two. This is a very, very fundamental
message. A very, very important message. A very basic gospel message. I'm trying to make this just
as plain as I possibly can. Speak in a manner so that everyone
can understand. Galatians 2. You see, Enoch was
justified before God. by faith. Didn't it say that
in Hebrews 10, 38? The just shall live by faith. Shall walk with God by faith. Didn't it say that? Amos 3, 3
says two cannot walk together except they be agreed. And you notice it says that Enoch
walked with God. Remember before, we talked about
when you're with somebody, that means that you're with them. If I, if I, John Sheasley there,
if I get in the car with him and go someplace, it means he's
driving. He's in charge. And wherever
I go, you know, I'll get there because I'm with him. Right? And wherever I end up, it'll
be because be because of him, or if I don't end up. If I end
up in the ditch, it's because of him, because I'm with him.
If I get to my destination, it'll be because of him. I'm with him. So can two walk together except
they be agreed? And to walk with God is not for
God to agree with us, and not for us to be co-equals or partners
in these things. It means us to be with him, in
him. Everything by him and with him,
he said. He's the pilot. We're not the
co-pilot. He is the captain of the ship.
We're just in the galley. We're galley slaves. If we get
somewhere, it'll be, if we get to heaven, it'll be because we're
with him. With him. Can two walk together
except they be agreed? We'll have to agree with God. We don't bring the Word of God
into agreement with us. We're going to have to be brought—our
thoughts and ways are going to have to be brought into agreement
with God. And the just shall live by faith. Galatians 2. Galatians 2. This is vital that you understand
this now. Verse 16 says, Knowing that a
man is not justified by the works of the law. Barbara, I wish that woman had
been here this morning, don't you? She's not here, is she? Maybe some other woman who had
never heard this before, who's never heard this before, will
hear it for the first time. Knowing a man or woman is not
justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. That is, a man came down to live
by faith for men, a man for men, a substitute. who lived a perfect
life by faith. Yes, Christ lived by faith. Without faith, it's impossible
to please God. Didn't the Scripture say that
God Almighty approved of His Son, pleased, God was pleased,
this is my Son in whom I'm well pleased, what did He do to please
Him? He lived by faith. He didn't do anything supernatural
to meet His needs. That's it, He lived by faith.
He believed God. by the faith of Christ, and Christ
did that for a chosen people. Even we have believed in Jesus
Christ that we might be justified—here it is, this is what I want you
to notice, Teresa, this is what I want you to notice—that we're
justified by the faith of Christ. not by the works of the law,
not by our deeds, not by our morality, not by our church going,
not by our quitting this, quitting that, doing this, doing that.
Don't you know that? Knowing this. We need to know
that, don't we? Or else we are not justified
by faith, that we don't please God. This is how we please God, that
we believe His Son. In my hands, Oh God what are
you bringing before me this morning to worship me what are you bringing
to me you're going to come into my prayer what are you going
to break what you got there Joe. Say it out loud. In your hands
no price you bring what you cling to. That's good. God's a By the works of the law, no flesh,
not one man born on the top side of this earth, will be justified."
Man, that's just as plain as the nose on your face. Some of
you got big noses. And that's a plain word, isn't
it? Therefore, seeing we only have
one hope, we use great plainness of speech. How's a man justified?
Not by works, not by religion, not by doing or not doing, but
by Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone. The just shall live and
walk by faith. How did Enoch walk with God? By faith in Jesus Christ. Now you say, wait a minute, preacher.
Jesus Christ wasn't even born yet. He wasn't born when Job
was born either. But what did Job say? He said,
I know my Redeemer liveth. Job said it's a question that
needs to be answered. How can a man be just with God? Didn't Job say that? Somebody
answer me, would you? He was talking to his friends
there that came up, his high self-righteous friends that came
in and thought Job was getting what came to him, was coming
to him. And all this came on because he was a rotten sinner,
and it didn't come on them because they weren't. And Job said, well,
just answer this question for me. How can he be clean that's
born of a woman? How am I going to be holy for
a thrice holy God? What can I do to please God?
How can a man be justified before a holy God, whom God looks at
the heart, the motive, the... He looks on the inside, not looking
on the outside. Y'all tell me that, would you?
How can a man be just with God? They didn't know the answer.
Job said that. I tell you what, I know. I know
my Redeemer living. The Lord my righteousness. There's
a just one. God's a just God and a Savior,
and He's going to send His just one to justify me. He's righteous,
and I'm not righteous, but He is going to be the Lord my righteousness. Job knew that. Enoch knew that. Enoch knew that. Where did he
hear that? Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. And how shall they hear without a preacher? Enoch heard
a man preach the gospel. You say, you sure are implying
a lot from this scripture. No, I am not. Enoch walked by
faith, all right? He walked and walked with God's
if you agree with God that just shall live by faith. It was justified
by faith and it walked by faith not by sight. How does faith
come? It's a gift of God. By grace
you save through faith and that's not of yourself. It's a gift
of God. Well, what's it faith in? Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ said no man comes under
the father but by me. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and you shall be saved. Don't believe, you'll be damned.
Enoch had to believe God's Christ, didn't he? Or he'd be damned.
Is that right, John Hughley? If it's not, then throw away
the Bible. God hasn't changed. One Lord,
one faith. Doesn't it say that? One faith. Enoch had to be justified the
same way you and I are. Enoch had the same faith you
and I do. in one person, one Lord, Jesus Christ. He didn't know his name. He didn't
know that there was going to be a man born someday and his
name would be Jesus. He knew there was going to be
one born someday. He didn't know his name was going to be Jesus.
Oh, he knew he'd be the Savior, but he didn't know his name was
Jesus. But he knew there was one going to be born who was
the Christ, the Messiah, going to be his substitute from God.
How do I know that? Adam knew that. Adam knew that. The woman's seed. We've looked
at that, haven't we? Faith cometh by hearing, and
hearing by the word of God. And what did Peter say? Hear
it, this is the word which by the gospel was preached unto
you. Faith cometh by hearing. Are
you with me? I'm laying line upon line here.
Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. It's
not just a man getting up and preaching the Bible. Everybody
believes the Bible. Every man that calls himself
a preacher preaches the Bible. Peter said, This is the word
which by the gospel is preached unto you. Without the hearing
of the gospel, no man is going to be saved. Enoch heard the
gospel. Adam preached it to Seth, Seth
preached it to Enoch, and on down the line the gospel was
passed. Enoch knew Adam. Did you know
that? Enoch knew Adam. Adam was his great-great-great-great-grandfather. He knew him. Adam told Enoch
the gospel. Guarantee it. Adam told Enoch
the gospel, because without it, no man's going to be saved. And
that's really what it means to provide for your own men. If
any man provide not this gospel for his own, if any man's not
the spiritual leader in his own, he's worse than an infidel. It's
the worst thing you can do. Let your kids starve. Let them
go naked. Don't let them go without knowing the gospel from your
lips. Adam preached to Enoch. What
did he say to him? Now here's what he said. He said,
Enoch, one day Adam, his great, great, great, great grandfather,
Adam Enoch's grandfather sat down with Enoch, his boy, one
day and he said, Enoch, let me tell you something. Something
you need to know. If you're going to walk with
God someday, if you want to know God, you got to know God, Enoch. We're sinners. And if we're sinners
because you're a great-great-great-great grandfather and grandmother,
that's me. And Eve, we rebelled against the Holy God. And we
brought this sin upon our race. We were holy and right, but we
sinned against God. And all those that come from
us are sinners, just like that. You ain't it? You're a sinner.
All born from us are sinners. And God's holy, ain't it? God
is holy, and he will by no means clear a guilty sinner. God can't
have anything to do with sinners. He's holy. He must punish sin,
ain't it? Sin demands death. He said, the
soul that sinneth must surely die. That's what he told us in
the garden if we'd only listen to it. He said, the day you eat
and rebel again, you'll die, and die and you shall die. Even
if we rebelled and were sinners, we died. We lost the life of
God, but God is merciful. God didn't leave us totally alone.
Should have. Could have. But He didn't. God
was merciful. You see, God said He would send
a man. He told us about woman seed. He thought that she got
Him when Cain was born. Oh, we were so wrong. You know,
I'd have to be better than Cain. We thought we got Him when Seth
was born. Your great-great-great-grandfather Seth. Oh, we were wrong. He'd
have to be better than Seth. And we've since learned, ain't
it, that that woman's seed is going to be the very seed of
God Himself. A sinless man. See, ain't it,
he can't have our seed, ain't it? He can't be born for me,
ain't it? Because we're sinners. This one's
going to have to be without sin. This man that comes, this woman's
seed, I don't fully understand it, ain't it? But this one that's
coming someday, he's going to have to be God with us. Amen? Yet God. I understand that. Because man
can't please God. Man can't satisfy God's justice.
Only God can. And this one's going to come
someday to succeed where I failed. He's going to live a holy life
for us, ain't he? And then one day, one day he's going to have
to die. That's what God showed us when
he killed that lamb back in the garden and clothed your grandmother
and I with the skins to clothe our nakedness and our sin before
God. God showed us in that that he's
going to slay the Messiah, the Christ, the mediator, the substitute
in our stand. He's going to slay him. He's
going to shed his blood because God told us to keep shedding
blood, keep sacrificing lamb. He said that's a picture of my
lamb that I'm going to send someday. One lamb to offer one sacrifice
forever to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. God's going
to send a lamb. God shall provide himself a lamb
for a sacrifice. You've got to have blood, ain't
it? You've got to have blood. In God's land, God's Christ,
God's sent one, God's Messiah. And it all points to that one
who's to come, Enid. Enid, call on God. Believe God.
Bring blood, Enid. Look to God's Lamb, God's Messiah. That's what Adam told Enid. Yes, that's what Adam told Enid. I guarantee you, he did. He never used the name Jesus,
but he preached the gospel to him. And by God's grace, one day,
Enoch believed. He heard the word, and he believed. By God's grace, Enoch began to
walk with God by faith. One day, Enoch called on God. He said, I've heard of thee by
the hearing of thy ear. My granddaddy told me the gospel.
And now, Lord God, you've revealed this to my heart. I heard it
and it didn't really sink in. And one day it touched his heart
to see that he was a rotten sinner and he couldn't please God. He
just failed miserably all the time. And he realized that, hey,
God will provide himself a substitute, a lamb. a representative for
all sinners. And he didn't say, in fact, I
believe that. Let him be for me. Let him be
my substitute. Let me be found in him. Not have
him on all righteousness. I might be, but I just believe
in your coming one, dear God. And the Lord revealed himself
to him. Justified. So he walked with God. He walked
with God, by faith. Do you understand that? That's how Enoch walked with
God. Huh? Oh yeah, that's how he walked
with God, by faith. A couple of more things, okay? Enoch walked with God, and what
that means, it means to walk with God, means, well, Charles
Hudson there, not too long ago, He came over and we went for
a walk in the woods, didn't we? A good time. I enjoy walking
with Charles. I enjoy talking with Charles. I enjoy communion with Charles. I enjoy being with Charles. I have a good time with Charles. I know Charles. And it's often
times I think about Charles. and to walk with God means those
very things. It's to have your mind, it's
the scripture says, think on these things. He loved to think
about God. There was a time when I wouldn't
have had, I didn't ever think about God. I just thought about
me, you see. I just thought about sin. I just
thought about whatever it was that I could get into. Now I
like to think on things about. Who makes me to differ? I didn't
have anything to do with that. That's the transformation. To
walk with God, you love to think about God. Do you like to think
about God? Do you have your mind set on things about, your affection
set on things about? I said I like to talk, but I
walked with Charles. Charles, we didn't go silent
the whole time, were we? That would have been a miserable time, wouldn't
it? walk together for an hour or two and never talk to one
another. I enjoyed talking with Charles. And to walk with God
is to talk with God, isn't it? You talk with your God? You can't
walk with him unless you talk to him. Huh? That's what it means
to walk with God. It's to talk to God. Talk to
God. So he ended up walking with God.
God was in his thoughts. God was in his affection. He
had his affection set on things above. But what's above? That's
where Christ sits. Oh, Enoch liked to think about
that coming sea. He did. And I like to think about
the gospel. Don't you? Enoch walked. Another way Enoch walked is he
did not walk as the world. And I'm not contradicting myself.
I said he walked as a man. He did. An average man. Just
a common man. If he lived today, his name would
be Joe. It wouldn't be either. It could be Joe. Common. Just
common old Joe. Just a man. Well, what do you mean he didn't
walk with the world? I mean he didn't walk in the direction to where
it was headed. And when you walk with somebody, Stan, you and
I walking together, we're going in the same direction, aren't
we? I can't walk with Stan if he's going north and I'm going
south. He just doesn't work that way. Well, the world, how's the
world headed? Where's the world headed? Huh?
away from God, the other direction, 180 degrees. They did not like
to retain God. The world doesn't like to think about God, doesn't
like to pursue God, is not interested in God. The world's walking with
breakneck speed the other way from God, running from God. Now, I'm trying to get to God,
you see, aren't you? Walk with God, not in the direction
of the world, and in this sense, Not in the principles of the
world. Don't hold to the principles and the ways of the world. Right,
Ed? To walk with God is to not walk
in the direction the world's headed, not to think like the
world, to be not conformed to the world, but be rather transformed
by the renewing of your mind. We don't have the same principles
and thoughts and ways, and so I'm not going where the world's
going. Where'd the world go last night? went to the bars and the
parties. Well, I had a good time last
night. I was somewhere last night. I
was with somebody last night. I'd like to think I was with
God last night. That's where I want to be. That's
who I want to be with. God and God's people. That's
where I want to go, wherever God and God's people are. See,
that's where I'm headed. That's where I want to go. Man
does what he wants to do. You go where you want to go,
don't you? Thank God that God's people are made wanting, made
willing in the day of His power. God changed my want to. There
was a day when I would not have wanted to come here on a Saturday
night, but now is the day when I don't want to be anywhere else. Explain that, would you? One word explains it. Grace. But you see, Ed was walking with
the world. He had no desire to rub elbows
with and go where the world was going. He was not of this world,
the Scripture says. Isn't it? We are of God and the whole world
lies in worship. The world is headed in one direction,
God's people are headed in another. You cannot serve both God and
man, but you can't straddle the fence, can you? You're walking
with the world or you're not. Is that right? You can walk like
a man and not walk like the world. You can be a man and not walk
like the world. I'm not contradicting myself,
am I Stan? You're a deacon. Been here a long time. You confirm what I'm saying.
I'm not speaking yea and nay here, am I? That's important. He didn't walk
with the world. You know, he was probably persecuted
by the world. And I guarantee you was. Guarantee
you was. He was persecuted by the world.
You can't walk with God. and not be persecuted by the
world. I guarantee you many of his family members, his neighbors,
his co-workers and all scoffed at him for what he believed. Come on, Enid, come with us.
Have a good time. Riotous living. Well, they thought
it strange that he didn't run the same excess of riot with
them. Where are you going, Enid? We're going to have a worship
service tonight. New Year's Eve? Save that for Sunday! No, that's
not what I want to do. Right? You silly man, you're
a fool, ain't it? You're a fool! Well, I'll be
a fool for Christ's sake. Win Christ. See, I'm trying to
win Christ and be found in Him. Enoch's talk. This is important,
folks. Enoch's talk. What did Enoch
talk? How did he talk? Would you turn
over to Deuteronomy 6 with me real fast? Huh? I'm asking nicely. Deuteronomy 6. And most of you
are off tomorrow. You slept late this morning.
You ought to be good and fresh. Huh? Are you? Ought to be. Deuteronomy 6. You ought to stand it for a few
moments. As he walked by the way, he talked
of the way. As he did not walk with God,
he talked of his God. His conversation was seasoned,
his speech was seasoned with what? Grace. He talked about
his God. He talked to his sons about God.
Look at Deuteronomy 6. Look Deuteronomy 6, verse 4. Here are we, Israel, the Lord
our God is one Lord. Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thine heart, with all thy soul, with all thy might.
It means we don't ask anybody to do anything. We don't ask
anybody to accept God. We don't ask anybody, would you
believe? Don't do that. That's not—God commands us, doesn't
He? They're a puny, pinhead messenger. Paperboy, go down with a message
from God and be begging people to hear the King. The King doesn't
say that if his message is done. Go down there and tell them.
Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God. Doesn't
it say that? No, would you please accept it?
God won't. No. Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all
thy might. These words which I command thee this day. shall be in thine heart." Doesn't
say that, Terry! You young people, I'm telling
you, you better believe Jesus Christ. You're not immune from
judgment. I'm not asking you to do anything.
I'm warning you. Knowing the terror of the Lord,
I'm trying to persuade you. Verse 7, and you men, you women,
you better teach them diligently. Verse 7, teach them diligently
unto thy children. Talk of them when you sit in
the house. You don't know that tomorrow
might be the last day you see your oldest son. Right? Deborah, Jennifer may die tomorrow. She's old enough to sin. She's
old enough to be held responsible for it. She's old enough to do
what she wills and wants to. She's old enough to be accountable
for it. What's the age of accountability? I don't know. It might be nine
years old for some. Is that right? Nowhere in here it says that
when you finally reach the age of twenty, then you'll be held
accountable. It doesn't say that, does it? So teach that, Jennifer. Look
at verse seven. Teacher, diligently talk of it
when you sit in your house. When you walk by the way, And you're welcome. And when
you lie down, when you go to bed, when you rise up, talk to
them about their God, whom they must know. They must know Him.
Joe Parks tell Joseph Aaron. John Caesar, you tell Josh Kelly. They might not hear from anybody. That one says here, you do it,
you fathers, you mothers, tell them. Tell Betsy, Betsy Ross. Enoch did. How do you know, Preacher? Oh yeah, Enoch talked about it,
because he had some boys. Turn back to Genesis chapter
5. Enoch had some boys, a bunch
of boys. He had a bunch of boys. Hundreds
of them. He told them. He told them what
he knew. You might not know much. You
ladies, you mothers, your husbands, you know, might know more than
you and so forth, but tell them what you know. Tell them what
you know. Tell them in the way that you
know it. Tell them. Talk with them by the way. When
you walk by the way, tell them about the way. ain't it did ain't
it had a son named Methuselah you see it down there verse twenty
five verse twenty twenty one ain't it lived sixty five years
and begat Methuselah had a son named Methuselah well Methuselah
had a son named Lamech look at it down there He lived 187 years in Bagat Lamech.
Why, I tell you, I don't want to have any children when I'm 65
or 187. Do you, ladies? Bagat Lamech, all right? Lamech was his grandson. Ennett
was around this grandson 48 years, Dan. Ennett lived 48 more years. So it was forty eight years old
when his granddaddy you know that forty eight years. Back
then they. Imagine what the family reunions
were like. Who was it was it Abraham that
had one and seventy two people were in it seventy two but you
can imagine these. Thousands. The thousands of—the
Armory—National Guard Armory wouldn't have held him. Well,
but he lived—he was 48 years old when his granddaddy died,
Lamech. And he must have known God. Lamech must have known God,
and I have to believe he got it from his granddaddy, Hena,
because—look back up at chapter 4, verse 26. Sapph is the great-great-great-great-grandfather
of Enoch. Sapph, it says, and after Sapph,
verse twenty-six, to him there was born a son, he called his
name Enos, and then began men to call upon the name of the
Lord. And it also says to call themselves
by the name of the Lord. Lamech, Enoch's grandson, named
his boy something. You know who Lamech's son was,
don't you? Enoch's great-grandson? You know what that means? Look up here in chapter 5, verse
6. Lamech, verse 28, I mean. Verse 28. Lamech lived 182 years,
and he begat a son, and he called his name Noah. Not just because it sounded good.
I believe God revealed something to this old man. The name Noah
means rest, comfort. Noah is a picture of Christ,
isn't he? Noah on that ship, in that ark,
building that ark for us. We're safe in the ark with Noah.
All saved alive with Noah. We're going to look at that real
soon. I can't wait. Noah. Lamech named him Noah because
he said this is the one that's going to comfort us. Verse twenty-nine.
This boy will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our
hands because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. Lamech
knew something, didn't he, Nancy? Who told him? And it said in chapter six, verse
nine, Noah walked with God. Oh, fellas, you don't know. That boy, those children might
not be saved now. They might not believe the gospel
now. But you'd be faithful if you think. Tell them what you
know. You faithfully set up, you set
a faithful example before them as much as you know how, as much
as the grace of God gives you. And you just don't know. Do you,
John? You just don't know when the
Lord will say. Do you, John? You walk with your God and it
could be your grand boy will walk with God, too. Now what
you want more than anything else? Well, you got them in the right
place, buddy. I commend you for that. You got them in the right
place. If you want your children to
walk with God, you're going to have to have them here where
they're here about Him, or else you're going to have to tell
them about Him. You need to walk with Him yourself.
They see through us. Our children see through us.
Lots, they saw through Him, His boys. Well, no one walked with
God. Enoch walked with God. Look at
Enoch's end, the last of Enoch, verse twenty-three of chapter
five, Enoch's end. It says in verse twenty-three,
twenty-four, all the days of Enoch were three hundred and
sixty-five years. That's got to be significant there. One
day, one year for every day of the year. I don't know what's
looking up. Deborah, do a study on that and
report back to me. Three hundred and sixty-five
years. There's some significance there, isn't there? Walk with
Him every day. Maybe that's what it means. I
don't know. Enoch walked with God, and he was not. One day,
his wife said, Enoch said, Hey, I'm leaving. Where are you going?
I'm going, just going for a walk. Well, where are you going? I'm
just out in the field there. You know how I like to walk in
the woods. And he didn't go on and say, I'm going to walk for
a while and pray. He didn't say that. Well, little woman, I'm
going to go pray. I'm going to go out in the field
and kneel down like I usually do and pray. Oh, no. He prayed without ceasing. He
didn't have to... You know what I'm saying. He
just said, well, you know, if you're going to pray, you pray
privately to God. You know, you lose a blessing the minute you
tell somebody what you did. He didn't say that. You said
honey I'm I'm going for a walk where you go and I just don't
know what time you'll be back for supper. Probably. Maybe not. And he went walking. This is. Listen to the start of this He went walking, the scripture
said, and he just walked on up into glory. In a moment of twinkling of an
eye, he was changed. He didn't have time to stop and
think and regret and do anything. He just walked down on into glory.
Phew, man. Sudden death, sudden glory. He
didn't die. He walked up into glory. That's
the reason he's the type of Christ, isn't it? And buddy, I hope that's what
happens to us. I hope the Lord comes. Well,
it says, This we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that
we which are alive and remain
