another time change. It takes
a while to get over that. We missed Thursday night, didn't
exist for us. We flew all night Thursday night
and neither one of us could even doze off on the airplane. And
we left over there at 6 in the evening and got to Atlanta at
6.30 in the morning and the night was gone. And you can't get it
back either. That's what we've discovered.
But as I said this morning, we had a wonderful trip and felt
like God blessed the services and blessed the fellowship. We actually stayed with Most
of the time we stayed with family, and we went to the big island.
All of us, they rented a big house. We all stayed together,
17 others, right? And so we were all there together,
fellowship, and had services together. And it was a blessed,
blessed time. among the people of God and preaching
the gospel. I was sharing with a couple of
the men that on a couple of occasions I was preaching to some that
had never heard the gospel before, and I don't think they'd ever
been in a church service before. And they had little kids with
them, and we didn't have a nursery. We didn't have the luxury of
a nursery. And for the most part, the kids did real well. But I
was preaching one time, and this little curly-headed boy come
up to me and hugged me around the leg, one of my legs. I just
kept on, I rubbed his head and kept on preaching. And so it went real well. And I'm thankful that God Bless
the word, and we heard from the folks over there, of course.
And they're going to have a cold spell. I understand this evening
it's going to get all the way down to 68 over there. That's really cold. They're going
to buy coats. They're buying coats and long
johns and that sort of thing. So I sure feel sorry for them. But you remember them. that God would continue to bless
them. They met again today. As they
do every Lord's Day, they meet together and watch a DVD or watch
us on Sermon Audio and then have a meal together. And so, continue
to pray for them. Let me read a few verses here
from 1 Corinthians chapter 6, and I'll begin in verse 9. 1
Corinthians 6 and verse 9. And here's what the scripture
says. Paul writes, know ye not that
the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived,
neither fornicators nor idolaters. nor adulterers, nor effeminate,
nor abusers in themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous,
nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit
the kingdom of God. And such were some of you, but,
but, that's a blessed word there, but, Ye are washed. Literally, ye were washed, ye
were sanctified, and you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. May the Lord bless the reading

go back to Romans, if you would, Romans chapter 5, to that passage
that Brother Elliot read to us just a few minutes ago, Romans
chapter 5. And here's my subject. And this
is a subject that ought to be of interest to everybody in the
building and everybody who's watching on the internet and
everybody who's listening to this either on a CD or watching
on a DVD sometime in the future. My subject is, are you justified? Are you justified? You need to answer that question
honestly, And you need to answer it with
an answer consistent with God's Word. Are you justified? I'm not asking are you religious. I'm not asking are you a good
person as we consider goodness. I'm not asking are you trying
to live a good moral life. Are you an honest individual? Those are not the questions that
I am interested in asking you. I think you're moral people,
and I know you're religious people. If you weren't, you wouldn't
be here. The question is, are you justified? I know this, no unjustified person
is going to glory. That's for certain. Are you justified? Now look here
in Romans 5 and verse 1. Therefore being justified By faith, we have peace with
God. And this peace is through our
Lord Jesus Christ. We have studied the scriptures
enough to know that whenever you come across that word, therefore,
you need to ask yourself this question. What is it there? Something has been stated before this question or before
this verse is set forth. Something has been stated that
this is therefore the consequence or the result. What's been stated? You go back into Romans chapter
4. Here we find Abraham, who's a
man of faith. He's a man who believes God.
He's justified not by his works, not by the deeds of the law. That's set forth in the third
chapter. But this is a man who's justified
with God because the righteousness that Abraham had to have, God
freely imputed it to his account. And Abraham believed what God
said. His faith wasn't the basis for
his justification. Actually, his faith was the result
or the evidence of his justification. We get down to the end of chapter
four and the last verse of chapter four, speaking of the Lord Jesus. Actually, I'll read verse 24
first. But for us also, Abraham believed
God. It wasn't written just for him,
to whom he was imputed, but for us also. Even us right now in
2017. But for us also to whom it shall
be imputed if or since we believe on him that raised up Jesus our
Lord from the dead who was delivered. He was delivered. Delivered for
our offenses. and was raised again. The reason
he was raised again, because of our justification that had
taken place when he died. He was delivered. Who was delivered
for our offenses? Who delivered him? God delivered
him. He was delivered over to the
hands of men by God to do with them according to their will.
God delivered him over to death. He was delivered into the hands
of men. He was delivered into the hands
of justice. He was delivered into the hands
of death. God did all of that according
to his eternal counsel and purpose. He was delivered by Judas to
all the chief priests. Delivered by them to the Roman
governor Pontius Pilate. Delivered by him to the Jews. Delivered by them to the Roman
soldiers who delivered him unto death. And all according to God's
eternal counsel and determinate purpose. He was delivered for
this reason, for our offenses. Our offenses. Our transgressions. That which
necessitated the death of the Lord Jesus was our own wickedness. The Bible states that Our transgressions,
all of our sinfulness, it's got to be dealt with. God's a just
God. He's always just. He's just when
He saves. He's just when He damns. Right? He's just when He shows us mercy. He's just when He has nothing to do with us. God's
always just. He can't deal with the sinner
any other way. God won't ever bend or alter
his requirement of perfection. There's no leniency with God. You may, somebody you know may
commit some awful crime against society. And they may get them
a lawyer who's very, very well spoken. And they may go before
a judge and jury and be so convincing that they will manage to get
off from committing that horrible crime. But nobody gets off with
God. You can't buy him off. You can't
bribe him. God's strict in His justice. He's got to be. He's got to be. That's His very character. We're
talking about the character of God. One of the things that this
religious generation knows nothing about is who God is. They don't
know anything about His justice. They'll talk about His mercy
and they'll talk about the love of God, talk about the grace
of God. But they have no idea that He's
a righteous God. They have no idea that He always
deals with men on a legal basis. He's got to deal with us on a
legal basis. And if He, on the basis of legality,
that's God's law, God's justice, if He finds us guilty of any
transgression, there's only one thing He must do, and He will
do. He's going to do away with us
forever. You know why? Because He's God. He's God. He's not going to change. He's
not going to alter His program. He doesn't take into consideration
unusual circumstances. I know what society says. A lot of people in society, they
do something awful and they say, well, it's the environment I
was brought up in. I wasn't raised right. My parents didn't love me enough. I wasn't hugged and kissed and
all of that. I had rough parents and this,
that or something else. I grew up in a bad part of our
city and this is the way society is and it's really the way all
of us are. We put the blame on somebody else for all of our
bad actions. But God's not going to hear any
of that. We stand before God. We stand
before God right now. And we're either justified or
we're unjustified. And I will tell you this. Ever how we are now, we will
be forever. And that's right. We will be
forever. So you're saying that nobody
else is going to come to the knowledge of Christ Jesus? I'm
not saying that. But I am saying this, if you
are brought to saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, you've
already been justified. In fact, you've justified before
God ever made the world. Because justification is in the
mind of God. It isn't something that happens
in you. It isn't an experience that you
have. I'm not going to ask you how
do you feel when God justified you. Well, I can tell you this,
you wasn't feeling anything because He justified you before He made
the world. This justification is based on
God's everlasting decree. free to save and to justify and
to sanctify and glorify. It's an everlasting thing. Our Lord Jesus was delivered
for our offenses according to the purpose of God and He was
raised up again. He was raised up again because
of this. He accomplished our justification. Now as you look at the subject
of justification, we talk about being justified. Paul writes
here in 5.1 being justified, therefore being justified, being
justified. What does it mean to be justified? Now that needs to be addressed.
Well it means to be righteous. And I was reading in preparation
for this message an old writer, and he put it in a real good
way, I think. He wrote, to be justified is
to be fit for God's presence. That's pretty simple. It's to
be fit for God's presence. Now, in your sinfulness, in my
sinfulness, we're not fit for His presence. No way. He's not going to allow us into
His presence. You know, only those who stand
in the presence of God accepted are those who are fit to stand
before Him. And our fitness is not to be
found in ourselves. We have no fitness. You say, but I'm a believer. Wonderful. But your belief is
not your fitness. That's not your righteousness.
It's not your righteousness. You say, but right here it says,
therefore being justified by faith. No, what it is saying
is, therefore being justified, take a little break right there,
as in a breath, take a comma, put a comma there. Therefore
being justified, by faith we have peace with God. By faith
we receive the good news we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ. It isn't faith that justifies
us. It isn't faith that declares
us to be righteous. And I can make good on that.
Go over to chapter 8 of Romans. Chapter 8 of this same book.
Now watch this. Romans chapter 8. Well, let's
read this glorious section beginning at 28. And we know, we're not
ignorant. We know God's taught us some
things. We know. What do you know? Well, Paul
says we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God. Do you love God? Do you love
God as revealed in the book? Do you love the attributes of
God? The characteristics of God? Do you love God as the righteous
God, the holy God, the just God? Them that love God. Do you love
God as He's revealed Himself in this book? Do you love God as He's revealed
Himself in the Lord Jesus Christ? Because that which you know of
God, you know of God through Christ Jesus. He is that one
who is the Word of God come down. He's the vehicle. What is a Word?
A Word is a vehicle of thought. And the Lord Jesus, He has entered
into this world to make known to us the mind, the will, the
purpose of God. If you want to know about God,
study the Lord Jesus Christ. He is God manifest in the flesh. To them that love God, do you
love God in Christ Jesus? Do you love Him as that one who
is sovereign? Do you love Him as that one who
is absolutely holy? Do you love Him as that one who
can do no wrong? Do you love Him as that one who
governs all things by the word of His power? Do you love Him,
this one who only saves sinners by free grace? Do you love God? A natural man doesn't love God.
The natural man hates God. He hates the God of the Bible.
You say, I never have hated God. Yes, you did hate God. And if
you talk like that, I suspect you still hate Him. Everybody
hated God, hates God by nature. We hate God as that one having
absolute authority over us. That one who has no obligation
to do anything good for us, to save us, to show us mercy, he's
not obligated to you. He said, I'll show mercy on whom
I'll show mercy. I'll give grace to whom I want
to give grace. If he wants to give grace to
somebody across town and not give grace to you, that's God's
business. Now, do you have trouble with
that, Doc? And you know, most people do. And we did too before
God convinced us of who he is. To them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose. One day God said, come here,
come here. And we came. That's the effectual
call. You know what the effectual call
is. You moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas, you issue that
effectual call quite often. You say to your kids, come over
here. Okay, come in the house. We'll say to the grandchildren,
come take the dog out. Be there in a little bit. Okay, come take the dog out. Then you open the door and say,
I said, come take the dog out. Be right there. It's just something
about that effectual call. That's what this is. It's a call
of God. You see, preachers, we get up and we say, come to Christ
Jesus. Believe on the Son of God. And
we say it in earnest. We mean business. We're very
sincere. The Lord comes to us like he
came to Matthew. And he said to Matthew, follow
me. And he didn't have to say it
a second time either. It's just something about the
power of the word, the power of the word. These are the ones
who are the called all according to his purpose. His purpose. Read on. For whom He did foreknow,
He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His
Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren, that He
might have the preeminence. That's what that means. He's
got the preeminence over all the brethren and He's not at
all ashamed to call us brethren. And he has all the preeminence,
and we love it that way, don't we? We want it that way. We worship
him as the one who has all preeminence over the brethren. He's the firstborn. Moreover, whom he did predestinate,
oh, what a lovely word. Whom he did predestinate, them
he also called. And whom he called, them he also
justified. and whom he justified, them he
also glorified." All of those in the past tense. Well, what should we then say
to these things? We say, if God be for us, who
can be against us? He that spared not his own son,
but delivered him up for us all, "...thou shalt not with him also
freely give us all things. Who shall lay anything to the
charge of God's elect?" Watch it now. It is God that justifies. Nobody else can justify. In fact, the apostle has spent
the better part of chapter 2, well all of chapter 2 and chapter
3, establishing the fact that self-justification is an impossibility. He said, there's none good, no
not one, there's none that seeks after God. We've all together
become worthless, worthless. He says, for all have sinned
and come short of the glory of God. We've all missed the mark. What mark? The mark of perfection. The mark of being like the Son
of God. We've missed that mark. That's
the mark that's got to be attained. Don't you understand that? That's,
to be justified, you've got to be like Christ Jesus. You've
got to be fit for God's presence, and the only way you can be fit
for the presence of God is to be as good as, as holy as, as
righteous as the Lord Jesus Christ, and bless the name of God, He
is the Lord, our righteousness. He is our fitness. He is our worthiness. How did
He establish this fitness for us? By His obedience unto death,
even the death of the cross. It's God that justifies. You
see, justification is something that happened in the mind of
God. It's a legal term. You read the
old writers and they'll say of being justified, it's forensic,
it's a forensic word. And that just means it's a legal
word, it's a word used in court. You say, but I believe salvation
is experienced. I do too. We do experience salvation. But in the mind of God, all this
took place. And I'll tell you, you'll have
peace in your heart that all is well with God when God the
Spirit makes you to understand it is all of God. It is all of
God. And all of this took place outside
of you. Justification doesn't take place
in you. Conversion takes place in you. Regeneration, that takes place
in you. But not justification. Justification,
that's a legal matter. And nobody can justify you but
God. And if you, tonight, right now,
are justified with God, it's because you've always been in
the mind of God. accepted in the beloved. In the beloved. He's your fitness.
He's your worthiness. He always has been and he always
will be. The worthiness, the fitness,
the righteousness is not in you. The holiness is not in you. He is our holiness. He is our
fitness. He is our righteousness. I wish
I could shout it from the mountaintop. Because that's altogether contrary
to today's preaching. It's God that justifies. And
look at the rest of this. Who is He that condemneth? Can anybody condemn us? Those whom God has freely justified? No. Why not? Christ died. What did the justice of God demand? Death for sin. Death for sin. Man alive, we're taught that
from Genesis end of chapter 3 all the way through the Old Testament,
right on through all the New Testament. Death for sin. Well,
our Lord Jesus entered into this world and what did He do? He
died for our sins according to the what? Scriptures. According
to the Scriptures. That's what the Scriptures have
been declaring that ever since the first book of the Bible. It's Christ that died. And watch
this, he didn't stay dead, but yea rather that he is risen again.
You know what his resurrection announces? God is satisfied. What do you know about that?
God is satisfied. Here came one to this earth to
take our place. To pay our debt. One who is altogether
innocent of any transgressions against God. And He took upon
Himself in old eternity to pay for the transgressions of all
of His people to settle the debt we owed. And He died. And this is the
way we know that His death satisfied God. He's risen again. He's risen
again. And where is he now? He's even
at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for
us. So, who can separate us from
the love of Christ? If you justified, nobody can
separate you from his love. I don't care how tough things
get, shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness
You'd become very needy, very needy. I think about Lazarus
over in the book of Luke, who he begged for food at the rich
man's gate. But he's one of God's children,
he's justified. Because he didn't go to glory,
he didn't go to Abraham's bosom because he is poor, any more
than the rich man went to hell because he is rich. The rich
man went to hell because he died in his sins. The beggar Lazarus,
he went to glory because he is righteous and justified in Christ
Jesus. That's why he went. It's the
only reason he went. You may say, preacher, I'm needy. Well, I'll buy you something
to eat if I can. But I can tell you this, if there
ain't nobody around to buy you a meal and you starve to death,
That hunger is not going to separate you from the love of God because
you justified in Christ Jesus. What about peril? Sober? War? No, that can't separate
you either. As it is written, for thy sake
we are killed all the day long. We are accounted as sheep for
the slaughter. But nay, in all of these things,
watch, we are not ever losers. We're never defeated. We're more
than conquerors. Through Him that loved us, we're
always the conquerors. We're on the winning side. We're
on the winning side. And really, it's already been
won. It's been won. Therefore He says, for I'm persuaded
that neither death nor life nor angels, nor principalities, that's
evil spirits, the devil, demons, nor powers, nor things of today,
things present, nor things to come, things we don't know anything
about, all the future, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature,
anything else you could name, just put anything else in this
list, it don't matter. None of them shall be able to
separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus
our Lord. We've justified. God has pronounced
us to be fit for his presence in Christ Jesus. That will never
ever change. I don't care what happens to
you. Things may get rough. Had a lady ask me over in Hawaii,
do you think we're seeing the last days? And I said, maybe.
We've been in the last days ever since the days of John the Apostle.
Maybe we're in the last days of the last days. I don't know.
But I do know this. For the righteous, it shall be
well. It shall be well. Because nothing
can separate us. And so when you go back to chapter
5 and verse 1, Therefore being justified, by this one who was
delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our
justification, therefore being justified. Justified in the purpose
of God, justified by the blood of the Lord Jesus, and this justification
is, that's a blessed truth that we receive by faith. Now we do
believe it by faith, we receive it. We receive it. I love this truth, don't you?
I love the fact that my fitness is at the right hand of God.
My righteousness is at the right hand of God. My holiness is at
the right hand of God. He's the one who suffered, bled,
and died for me. And that is to me, I hope it
is to you, but to me it's so clear. It brings such joy to
my soul. Lord, I'm so thankful this thing
of salvation is in no way dependent upon me. Isn't that good news? It's good news that it's all
of grace and it's all in Christ Jesus and it always has been
and it always will be. Therefore being justified. By faith we have peace with God.
We receive this blessed, blessed truth. We have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ. God's not mad at us. God's not
angry with us. No, not at all. And you know
what? The enmity, the enmity that was
within us, God has There's still some enmity there,
isn't there? We just have to be honest about
that. There's still some sin there. There's still things,
when things happen in life, we kind of kick against them. I
know you do, because that's the way I am. So all that enmity
is not gone. That's the old man. That's old
nature. But it's going to die out one
of these days. And we'll be done with that.
We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, how blessed it is to be accepted
in the beloved. Sweet peace. Peace that God gives. You go home tonight, you who
rest in your poor souls in the Christ who is crucified for sinners,
you go home tonight, lay your head on your pillow and you just
lay there and rejoice in the goodness of God and just bask
in the sunshine of His love and His grace. And forget your worries. No wonder the Savior said to
His disciples, His followers, over in Matthew 6, be anxious
for nothing. Be anxious for nothing. You seek
in first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. You seek in
this to be justified in Christ Jesus alone. Oh, yes I am. But
don't be anxious about anything. If everything is alright between
you and God, Everything is alright then. Right? We are fit for God's
presence. Even now, even now, we are fit
for His presence. Because our fitness is Christ
Jesus, the Lord. Glory to His name. Boy, that
would be a good song to close with, wouldn't it?
