If you will take your Bibles
and turn with me to Genesis chapter six. I'm not gonna read through this.
I'm gonna let you do your own reading here. But in chapter
six through nine of the book of Genesis, God the Holy Spirit
gives us the account of the judgment and destruction of the world
and the salvation of his people through a man called Noah. And Noah is the next man in our
study of the types. Now, what am I talking about
when I say a type? Well, in Hebrews chapter 9, he
uses phrases like this. He said these, the priesthood
and all the things that they did in the priesthood, the services
of the common priest and the high priest and all these things,
he said these were a figure for the time then present. They illustrated
something. They pictured something. They
told something by what these men were doing, these sacrifices.
They were a figure for the time then present. And then later
on in that chapter, he said these things were a pattern of things
in the heavens. So they were set out You ladies,
you do make dresses and sew and things like that. Well, before
you do that, you have a pattern. The pattern's not the dress,
but it's similar. And you lay it down and you cut
out the pieces to make the dress. Well, all of these things, as
priesthood, all these things in the Old Testament, all these
sacrifices, the priesthood, all of these things were patterns
of things in the heavens. And then he says in chapter 10
of Hebrews that these things were a shadow of good things
to come. And you know what a shadow is.
A good friend of mine was walking along and they lived near an
airport and he and his wife were walking and he saw this big shadow
of a plane come over and he said, look, there's a plane. And she
said, that's not the plane. The plane's up there. This was
just a shadow. And it's that way with the priesthood. These were not those very things.
They were shadows of things to come. And he tells us in Colossians
chapter 2 the same thing. We're not to look to these holy
days and Sabbath days and all of these things. These things
were a shadow of things to come, but the body is Christ. These
are his shadow, his patterns. And so it is with Noah. He's
the next man in our study of the types which picture our Lord
Jesus Christ and the saving grace of God which came by Him. Now if you're taking notes and
you want to study our text a little further, if you want to find
out why I say the things that I say this morning, you can find
this man Noah spoken of in the Chronicles of the Kings. That's where they begin to talk
about Noah. And you can find him in Isaiah
chapter 54 verse 9. You can find him spoken of in
Ezekiel 14, 14. Our Lord speaks of Noah in Matthew
24, 37 and in Luke 17, 26. You can find him listed in the
roll call of faith in Hebrews chapter 11 and verse 7. And Peter
uses him twice. Once in his first epistle and
once in his second epistle. 1 Peter 3.20 and 2 Peter 2.5. And in both places, he uses him
as a picture or a type of the Lord Jesus Christ. So how is
Noah a type of Christ? When we study this man, Noah,
and we study the destruction of the world, and we study the
ark and the condemnation of God that fell, how is Noah, how does
he typify the Lord Jesus Christ? Well, let me give you six things
this morning. I'm gonna try to keep these things as simple as
I know how to make them so you can understand them and you can
study those scriptures that I gave you and see if this is not what's
stated in those scriptures. First of all, as a man who finds
grace in the eyes of the Lord, Noah found grace. Noah wasn't
any better than the other rebels. He wasn't any better than those
whose thoughts were continually evil. He wasn't any better than
them, but he found grace in the eyes of the Lord. God was gracious
to Noah. He found grace in the eyes of
the Lord. The Lord sent grace to him and
warned him of things that were about to happen. Now, Noah found
grace in the eyes of the Lord as a hell-deserving sinner. He
was a sinner. But he was chosen of God and
precious. But Christ found grace in the
eyes of the Lord as our federal head and representative. God
appointed Christ as our representative. See, all men fail according to
the scripture in Adam. Why? Because Adam was our representative. He was our federal head. He's
the beginning of this race. He is the one whose seed sets
the nature of all his sons and daughters. It tells us in Romans
chapter 5 verse 12 that by one man sin entered the world and
death by sin and so death passed upon all men for that all have
sinned. How did it get here? Through
Adam. Even so, Christ, he is the federal
head and representative of his people. And as that federal head
and representative, he found grace in the eyes of the Lord. God chose a people in Christ
and blessed them. You can read about it in Ephesians
chapter 1. He said, Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all
spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, according as
he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.
Now, this is how this grace, this is why Noah found grace
in the eyes of the Lord. He was chosen of God in Christ
before the world began. Scripture said the law came by
Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. As God showed
grace through the person of Noah, God shows grace through the person
of His Son. Paul writes in Romans 3 verse
24, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption
that's in Christ Jesus whom God has set forth to be the propitiation
for our sins through faith in His blood. Why? To declare His righteousness
for His remission of our sins. God must... He don't simply erase
your sins. God... Sin has to be paid for. And He sets forth Christ as the
propitiation. He is the Redeemer. He had to
accomplish redemption. He don't just give out redemption.
Redemption had to be accomplished. And to accomplish redemption,
He must die on the cross. He must live under the law. In Titus chapter 3 verse 7 he
said, being justified by his grace that we should be made
heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Our hope is in
the grace of God which was given us in Christ. Paul said this
to Timothy. He said, God hath saved us. Now
that's something in the past, that's not something in the future.
Although salvation extends into the future and by future means,
but now he's talking about something in the past. And he said, God
has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according
to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace. Now listen, which was given us
in Christ Jesus before the world began. So you see here how Noah
becomes a type of Christ or a picture of Christ? He found grace in
the eyes of the Lord. How come you to find grace this
morning? Huh? Because grace came by Jesus
Christ. And that's how all of us find
it. Everything that God purposed
to preserve through the flood found his grace through this
man called Noah. There's just one preacher in
the days of Noah, and that was Noah. He was a preacher of righteousness. Not your personal righteousness,
but the righteousness of Christ. That's what he preached, and
he preached it way back yonder. And even a grander scale, all
of the elect of Christ find his grace channeled through him. So Noah is a type of Christ in
that he found grace in the eyes of the Lord. And then secondly,
Noah is a type of Christ as he is the savior of the world. You
ever think about Noah in that capacity? This world would have
been folded up if it weren't for Noah. Noah found grace in
the eyes of the Lord. He become the savior of this
world. Now there's many scriptures that
refer to Christ as the savior of the world. In John 3, verse
17, our Lord says, For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. That's pretty clear, isn't it? In 1 John 2, verse 2, it says,
And he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only,
but also for the sins of the whole world. And both our Lord
and the Apostle John are using the word world as it's used in
contrast to the prejudice of the Jews who believe that nobody
else is going to be saved except the nation of Israel. That's
why they use that word world. And they used it often. And it
doesn't refer to every man, woman, and child in the world. any more
than it did when Noah, that salvation that God provided through Noah,
did not extend to every man, woman, and child in the world.
It extended to those who believe. And if I understand the scriptures
correctly, by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man
should boast. So that believing that was extended
to Noah who found grace in the eyes of the Lord was a gracious
faith and a gift of God. Both our Lord and the Apostle
John uses this considering the prejudice of the Jews. And when
in fact God's elect shall be called out of every nation, every
kindred, Every tongue and people under heaven. That's what the
scripture said. He's not going to save every man, woman, and
child of every nation, but he's going to save a remnant. And
it's going to be, according to the scriptures, according to
the election of grace. Pastor, can you make good on
that in the scriptures? I can. But I want you to understand
what I'm saying. Noah preached to anyone who'd
listen. I will. Bring them in here, black,
white, yellow, or red. I don't care. Male and female. Old and young. I'll preach to
them. I don't know who God's elect are. But I will when they
believe. I will, because that's the evidence
that marks your election. God had no intention to save
the whole world in the sense of every man, woman, and child.
He told the Jews, listen to this, he said, I am the good shepherd.
This is over in John chapter 10. He said, I'm the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his
life for the sheep. And then he tells them, you believe
not because you're not of my sheep. As I said unto you, my
sheep hear my voice. And I call them by name and they
come out, they follow me. The world, in a sense, of a preserved
humanity was saved according to the purpose and grace of God. And Paul, speaking of his kinsmen,
the Jews, who now become the minority in this thing, listen
to what he tells them. He said, though the number of
the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant
shall be saved. And again, he quotes from the
Old Testament prophets over in Romans 9, verse 29, and he said,
except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we'd been like
Sodom and Gomorrah. We'd been destroyed without anybody
being saved. And then in Romans 10, 5, he
said, even so, then at this present time, also there is a remnant
according to the election of grace. So Noah's a type of Christ
as he was appointed of God to be the savior of the world. Now, I want to be as clear as
I can on this. Election is not God passing by
some who would have otherwise believed. Noah preached 120 years
to this world and nobody believed but his three sons and his three
daughters-in-law. He preached to them. Anybody
out there that could have or would have believed, he'd have
put them on that ark. But in God's purpose, just that
handful went on that ark. It's not God's passing by some
who may have wanted to be saved. It is God showing sovereign grace
to some who otherwise would never have believed. And then thirdly,
Noah is a type of Christ in that Noah built the ark per God's
commandment and filled it with all that God purposed to preserve. What did Christ tell Peter? Peter
gave that great profession. And he said, flesh and blood
didn't reveal this to you, Peter. And he said, upon this rock I'll
build my church and the gates of hell should not prevail against
it. How did he build that church? Per God's commandment. Is that
right? What did he say in John chapter
6? He said, I come down from heaven, not to do my own will,
but the will of him that sent me. And this is the will of him
that sent me, that of all which he hath given me, I should lose
nothing, but raise it up again at the last day. And then the
Jews began to murmur, and he said, don't murmur. He said,
no man can come to me. except my Father draw him. As
it's written in the scriptures, they shall all be taught of God.
Therefore, every man that has learned of the Father cometh
unto me. He comes to me. The church is
that city Abraham sought for, which had foundations, whose
builder and maker is God. And Christ is the builder of
the church, in that he is the author and finisher of our faith,
Faith has to do with trusting a person. I know religion sells
you a bill of goods. They say come down the aisle
and take my hand and sign this pledge card or kneel at this
altar or come down here and we'll all gather around and we'll pray
for you and all these things. They call that, if I remember
the expression, praying through. That's not salvation. Salvation
is believing, trusting in a person. And that person is the Lord Jesus
Christ. There's none other name under
heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. So Noah built
his ark for God's commandment and Christ built his church for
God's commandment. And he's the builder of the church
as he is the firstborn among many brethren. There's Christ
and then all those born of him. He's the first begotten from
the dead. He's the builder of the church
as he is the head of the body, the church. He's the federal
head and therefore it's beginning. He's the builder of the church
as he was chosen of God and ordained to that end. Nobody else could
build the church. He built the church. And he's
the builder of the church adding to it daily such as should be
saved. That's what it says in Acts chapter
2. the Lord added to his church daily, such as should be saved. My friend, God did not merely
choose to save some people and then left them to devise their
own means. If that were true, you might
have seen in Noah's day some rafts and some boats and some
towers or some balloons and who knows what to try to save themselves. They would have devised all sorts
of ways, but you didn't find them trying to devise anything. They just rejected the message
flat out. What we do find in Noah's day
is a vessel designed of God and given to Noah in every detail. And so we find that our election
in Christ to salvation is by sanctification of the spirit
and belief of the truth. He's already, the Lord hath devised
the means to recover his banished. Who did? The Lord did. And the
preparation of the heart in man and the answer of the tongue
is from the Lord. It's from him. And we find our
election including our predestination unto the adoption of sons and
the giving of the Holy Spirit because we're sons and the providence
of God in bringing us to hear the gospel and the work of the
Holy Spirit to cause us to be born again and to give us ears
to hear and a heart to understand. All of those things were given
to us of God. Given to us of God. And then fourthly, Noah is a
type of Christ in that he was the sole authority over all things
concerning the ark. Nobody did anything until Noah
instructed them. Is that too hard? Go back and
read that account again. God spoke to Noah, and Noah spoke
to his sons. Isn't that how it happened? That's
exactly how it happened. In Ephesians chapter one, verse
22, he said, God hath put all things under his feet and gave
him to be head over all things to the church. As Noah was the
sole authority over the building of that ark and over the gathering
of things into that ark, so Christ is with the church. I hear men
talk about making Jesus their Lord. What you make Jesus is
of little consequence. I'm telling you the truth. What
matters is what God hath made him. That's what matters. Peter said, let all the house
of Israel know assuredly that God hath made that same Jesus
whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. They didn't make
him Lord and Christ, God did. They wanted to crucify him and
did. They wanted to get rid of him
forever. They wanted to get him out of the picture. He was the
controversy. He was the offense. Get him out
of here. Get rid of him. But they couldn't
because God made him both Lord and Christ. Now I'll tell you
another picture of Christ is David. God made David king over
Israel. He was the most unlikely of people
to be king. His own father brought every
son he had in and David in last. And only because the prophet
asked him if he had any more sons. Yeah, I got one. One little ruddy boy out there,
he's tending the sheep. He's not into running. Well,
you go fetch him. That's the king. That's God's
king. Do you think everybody bowed
to David as king? No. No, a bunch of the people
despised him and hated him and tried to get rid of him. But
God made him king and he was king over the despisers as well
as the ones who loved him. And God hath made Jesus Christ
Lord. Lord. Scriptures tell us that whether
we live, we live unto the Lord, and whether we die, we die unto
the Lord. Whether we live, therefore, or
die, we are the Lord's. For to this end, Christ both
died and rose and revived, that he might be Lord, both of the
dead and the living. Nothing went into that ark without
Noah's approval. Nothing. Don't you imagine some
of those boys tried to bring some things in there? Maybe one
of them's wife loved flowers. And she said, well, there ain't
no roses on there. I'm gonna get a rose right up
there. And he said, put it back, put it back. Nothing went on
that ark without his approval. God told him exactly what to
put on that ark and what not to put on that ark. And he was
the sole authority. As I read through these accounts
in Genesis, I found one name preeminent through
all three chapters. One name preeminent. I went through
and highlighted it because I'd never seen it before. Noah found grace in the eyes
of the Lord. Who did? Now, Shem, Ham, and
Jephus weren't with him. They ain't mentioned. Noah found
grace in the eyes of the Lord. Genesis 6, verse 18, with thee,
Noah, will I establish my covenant. Huh? That's right. One man. Verse 22, thus did Noah according
to all that God commanded him. Who did? Noah did. Well, didn't
the boys do some work? Yep, yep. Genesis chapter seven, verse
one, God said to Noah, come on in, bring your house with you. In Genesis chapter eight, verse
one, it says, God remembered Noah. Isn't that what that says? And then in Genesis 9 verse 1
it said, and God blessed Noah. One name preeminent through that
whole thing. And even though God has a number of chosen ones
that's gonna be saved, that more than the sand of the sea and
more than the stars in the heaven, there's one man to whom he attributes
salvation, that's the Lord Jesus Christ. With him, he made his
covenant. He found grace in the eyes of
the Lord. The Lord said to him, come in,
didn't he? He rose from the dead. And the Lord blessed him. And
when he did, he blessed his whole house. God best his authority
where it pleases him, and you might laugh at the man or mock
his character or size. Just like nobody thought David
was gonna be Lord. And nobody thought Jesus was
either. They mocked his authority. But he's the Lord. So Noah was
the sole authority, and in that he's a type of the Lord Jesus
Christ. And in Biblia, Noah is a type
of Christ as the earth was populated after the condemnation of God
by his seed. Now there were a lot of people
on the face of the earth back then. We won't think of them
as a thousand or so. Oh no, there were millions of
people in the days of Noah. Millions of people. Those men
lived 900 years and begat sons and daughters. There's no telling
what the population of the earth was after those generations. But none of their seed continued
on. Noah's seed, that's what continued
on. That's the seed God chose to
populate or repopulate, if you will, the earth. Be fruitful
and multiply and replenish the earth is what he told Noah. Even
so, this world being condemned in Adam and death passing upon
all men shall be repopulated and shall find their being from
the holy seed of God. That's who's gonna be there,
his seed. In Galatians 3.16, it says now,
to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not
unto seeds as of many, but unto one and thy seed, which is Christ. And every son or daughter born
into the kingdom of God is born of the seed of the incorruptible
word of God, which by the gospel is preached unto them. Herein shall be populated, this
earth shall be populated, or heaven if you will, shall be
populated by one man through his gospel seed. And then sixthly,
Noah is a type of Christ in that the wrath of God was poured out
upon him, yet he was preserved of God and raised from the wrath
of God. He was raised from the dead. This is what men and women never
think about when they think about the flood. The Ark of Noah did
not escape the flood. It endured it. It endured it. Religion talks about a salvation
that escapes the judgment of God. Christ didn't escape the
judgment of God. He endured it. He bore our sins
in his own body on the tree. He was wounded, Isaiah said,
for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, and the chastisement
of our peace was laid upon him. The Lord hath laid on him the
iniquity of us all, and God made the soul of his son an offering
for sin, Isaiah 53.10. And when he did, he saw the travail
of his soul and was satisfied. Christ endured the wrath of God. And he satisfied the justice
of God. God cannot suffer and man cannot
satisfy, but the God-man did both. He both suffered and satisfied. And the scripture says, ye are
dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. And when Christ,
who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with
him in glory. As all Noah's house was put in
that ark with him, And when that ark was landed, and the dove
came back with the twig, and he landed there on Mount Ararat,
and he stepped forth out of that ark, his whole house was preserved
in him. He tells us that the ark was
pitched within and without. That's an interesting word, that
word pitch. You know what it means in the
original language, what that word pitch? It means Kephar. Kephar is the word for atonement. That's what that word means,
atonement, appeasement. He bore the wrath of God. He
accomplished our atonement. He paid the price. He's our redeemer. Noah is a type of Christ. May God give you some understanding
of what I've said here this morning.
