I Believe the Lord's given me
a message for you this morning Something for your soul's comfort
and joy and edification. I Want to show you some things
that are sealed Things that are sealed I've gone through the
book of God several times this week Marking those things that
we're specifically told God has sealed Each time I've looked
at them Found something that gave me instruction in the things
of God administered comfort to my own soul Here are some things
that are sealed. Let's begin in John chapter 6
and verse 27 John chapter 6 and verse 27 our Lord Jesus Christ is speaking to these Jews who
keep raising questions. They will not bow to the gospel
of God's grace, but he keeps answering questions by way of
instruction, not for the benefit of those Jews who stood by there
and were certainly not going to believe him, but for the benefit
of his disciples who also with him. So these things are written
like everything else in this book for the benefit of our souls. John 6 verse 27. Labor not for
that meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth
unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give unto
you. Now watch this. For him hath
God the Father sealed. I don't know how many times I've
read that, but somehow a couple of weeks ago as I was preparing
to preach to you from this sixth chapter of John, that just Jumped
out at me him hath God the Father sealed sealed This one who's
standing on the earth God manifest in the flesh Speaks of himself
as that one whom God the Father had sealed So the first thing
that set before us here is a sealed Savior Him hath God the Father
Sealed this one who gives everlasting life to sinners This one who
alone is life eternal. This one who alone is the door
by which we must enter into everlasting life. This one who alone is access
unto God. Him hath God the Father sealed. Now the word translated sealed,
it's used throughout the New Testament. Every place it's used,
it's the same word. It means this, stamped for security
or preserved kept secret really this sentence this last sentence
of John chapter 6 it might be more correctly translated this
way him at the father sealed God And that being the case, our
Lord is here telling us exactly the same thing Peter announced
on the day of Pentecost when he said that God had made him
a man approved among you with signs and wonders and many miracles,
made him approved as the Messiah, the God-man. And our Lord Jesus
is here saying, God the Father has sealed him, made it manifest,
stamped to him as God. He did it right before these
Jews. when he multiplied the loaves and the fishes. This is
one of those many places, those many very precious portions of
scripture in which God the Holy Spirit uses very few words to
teach us profound truth. Here in just seven words, just
seven words, the Lord Jesus declares that all three persons in the
Godhead are involved in the work of redemption in the saving of
our souls. I fully agree with Robert Hawker.
He commented on this passage and said, no doubt all scripture
is blessed, being given by inspiration of God. But there is a particular
peculiar blessedness in these sweet portions in which at one
view represent the holy three in one, unitedly engaged in the
center's redemption. Who could be the him spoken of
in this passage except our Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God?
Who is it that could seal him except God the Father? And who
is that one with whom he is sealed except God the Holy Spirit? Who
but God should give us such profound depth of meaning in such few
brief words? Him hath God the Father sealed. Let us ever then behold as our
warrant of faith. the divine authority of the man
Christ Jesus as God our Savior. Him hath God the Father sealed. He and he alone is infinitely
suited to meet our soul's need in every state and in every circumstance. The validity of all his gracious
acts, the validity of all his gracious words, the validity
of all his gracious deeds, the validity of His righteousness
in obedience in life, and the validity of His atonement in
dying as our substitute. All stands with this, Him hath
God the Father sealed, sealed wondrously from eternity in the
choice and appointment of Him as our substitute. Sealed Him
as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, but now manifestly
sealed, openly sealed in the revelation of the gospel. The
lord jesus was sealed by the spirit of prophecy in the old
testament all the prophets spoke of him To him give all the prophets
witness to him all things revealed all things point and of him all
things speak He is sealed by the spirit of anointing when
the lord jesus came to be baptized you remember He came to Jordan
to be baptized with John, and John said, Oh, no, no, no. I
have need for you to baptize me. And the master said, Suffer
it to be so now. That is, John, let's go through
with this. For thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. And thus, symbolically, the Lord
Jesus went down into the watery grave. He didn't have a little
water sloshed in his face. He went down in a watery grave. And he came up out of the grave
and walked out of the river. And thereby symbolized the fulfilling
of all righteousness by his obedience unto death and his resurrection
giving merit and life to all who believe on him. And thus
that's what baptism represents. Our Lord Jesus as he was baptized,
John said, I looked and I saw a spirit descending from heaven. The dove lighted on him and stayed
with him. That's how the father said to
me, you're going to know who it is when you see him sealed
with the spirit. He was sealed by the spirit when
he was justified in the spirit, raised from the dead, and thereby
the Holy Spirit declared that what he had died to accomplish
has been accomplished. The sin that was made his is
now put away. and sealed by the spirit when
the gospel is preached in the power of the spirit. And now
he gives his spirit to chosen centers, giving life everlasting
to all who are redeemed by his blood. It was the spirit of Jehovah
that was upon him when he was anointed to preach the glad tidings
of peace, to bring bind up the brokenhearted and to play proclaim
deliverance to the captives. This great savior and the father
has sealed is held before us there. and recommended to all
sinners everywhere as the object of faith. There he sits, the
Lamb on his throne, him whom God the Father has sealed. You can safely trust him. You
can trust to him all the affairs of your life. You can trust to
him your immortal soul. Him hath the Father sealed. Oh,
Spirit of God, help sinners. to receive Christ Jesus, the
Savior, whom the Father has sealed. We might well pray, and I'll
look at it before the message is done in just a little bit,
as the church did in the Song of Solomon, set me as a seal
upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm. All right, the first
thing then is a sealed Savior. Turn to the book of Revelation
again, Revelation 5, we read earlier about a sealed book. Revelation chapter 5 verse 1.
We won't read the whole passage together again, just this one
verse because we read it earlier. I saw in the right hand of him
that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside
sealed with seven seals. Now I don't know about you, but
that would just automatically get my curiosity. That'd just
get my curiosity. I can walk through a library,
if I've got my mind on something else, and never think about pulling
a book off the shelf. Just walk through it. Doesn't
matter how many books are there. Doesn't matter what kind of library
it is. Unless I should happen to stumble across one that I
knew somebody didn't want me to look into. Something that
was wrapped up. sealed. I'd figure out some way
to pry in and get a look if I could. You would too, except with regard
to the things of God. John said, I saw a book. I saw
a book in the hand of God sitting on his throne, and it was obvious
it had writing everywhere. There wasn't a place on it where
there wasn't something written. And that book was sealed up with
seven seals. Sealed with seven seals. And
I wanted to know what was in the book. I wanted to know so
bad that I wept because no man was found in heaven or in earth
who was able and worthy to open the book. And one spoke to him
and said, no need to cry, John. Behold, the lion of the tribe
of Judah hath prevailed to open the book. Do you know when he
prevailed? John's talking about what he
saw in heaven now. Before the book was ever opened,
he prevailed to open the book. In God's eternal decree, he prevailed
as the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. And because he
prevailed to open the book, he did not ask permission, but he
reached and took the book and he opened it. What is this book? It's the book of God's eternal
decrees. I have no question at all about
that. It speaks of God's purpose with respect to the entire universe
throughout all the ages of time. It is the book of divine predestination,
the book which God has written from eternity. You mean Brother
Don, God Almighty wrote a book? No. Now, God doesn't need a book
to remember anything or to ordain anything. He's talking to us
so we can get hold of it with our puny brains. You're talking
about God's purpose. And the Lord Jesus opens the
book. Our Lord Jesus opens this book
of which he spoke when he said, Lo, I come to do thy will. Oh, my God, in the volume of
the book, it is written of me. I delight to do thy will. The
Lord, our God, The only one who is God is a God of purpose. God's purpose includes all things. I know you folks in this congregation,
you hear this all the time, you kind of nod, well that's so,
we believe that. would to God we just have to
believe what we say we do. The God of glory is a God of
purpose. His purpose includes everything.
His purpose ultimately is the salvation of his people. This
book is the book of God's decrees and God's purpose with regard
to all things as it relates to the saving of his people for
the glory of his great name. The object of God in everything
that has been, everything that is, and everything that shall
be is the salvation of his people to the praise, honor, and glory
of God. In sovereign election, God chose
a people whom he would save. In divine predestination, he
arranged everything. Arranged everything. necessary
for the saving of those people. I don't mean he just planned
it, I mean he ordained it, he arranged it, he did it. He arranged
it all. You mean, Brother Don, before
the world began, God predestined everything that comes to pass
in time? You got it. That's exactly what it means.
Everything. I just saw you bat your eyes right down to that.
Exactly. Exactly. God doesn't care about
such small things as that. You can't control everything
big if you don't control everything little. Can you? Our God rules everything exactly
according to his purpose of grace and predestination. This is how
the scriptures put it, for of him, that's the source, And through
him, that's the means they're done. And to him, that's the
end, are all things to whom be glory forever. In election, he
chose a people to save. In predestination, he sovereignly
arranged everything necessary for their salvation. In providence,
he's opening the seals. Just turns the pages one after
the other Fulfilling his purpose and that's exactly how this is
portrayed from right here in Revelation 5 1 all the way through
the book of Revelation Particularly till you get to the chapter 10
where you see the angel with a book in his hand the Lord Jesus
Standing with one foot on the earth and one foot on the sea
with the book open turning the pages of the book just turning
the pages as John saw it and the book was closed. It was a
mystery sealed with seven seals. Seven speaking of perfection
and completion and grace. This book is a mystery sealed
with these seven seals, not seven imaginary dispensations of time. What nonsense. But seven seals. That simply means that the book
is Everything in it, everything God ordained, everything God
decreed, everything God purposed from eternity is kept secret
until Christ reveals it. Everything. Well, I wonder what
God's will for tomorrow is. I don't know, but I can tell
you tomorrow afternoon. I wonder what God's will for next year
is. I don't know, but I can tell you at the end of the year. What
do you mean? It's all secret until God makes
it known. Secret until Christ reveals it. All right. Third, turn over to
chapter seven of the book of Revelation. Sealed things, a sealed Savior,
a sealed book. Here's a sealed people. Here's a vast multitude of people. They are in the book of God called
God's elect. A people chosen in eternity,
redeemed at Calvary, who must be saved before the world is
destroyed. Revelation 7 verse 1. After these
things, I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not
blow on the earth. nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending
from the east. The Lord Jesus is that angel
having the seal of God, the living God. And he cried with a loud
voice to the four angels. He's the commander of the angels
to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying,
hurt not the earth, neither the sea nor the trees, till we have
sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. Psalm 22
verses 30 and 31, the psalmist speaks of the Lord Jesus and
says, a seed shall serve him. Who should declare his generation?
A seed shall serve him. This is a young Jewish man, 33
years old, never been married, got no children. Who's going
to declare his generation? A seed shall serve him. There are some people in this
world who are His seed. They're referred to as the seed
of the woman. They're referred to as the seed
of Abraham. They're His seed. And they're
that seed of which He shall see of the travail of His soul and
shall be satisfied. They're His seed. And they shall
serve Him. They're created to serve Him.
They're made to serve Him. And the angel here says, don't
destroy the earth. until every one of these, his
servants, are sealed. What's so much sealed? We'll
look at it in just a little bit, talking about the seal of the
Spirit in grace. Until they are sealed in their foreheads, sealed
by the work of God's grace, saved by God Almighty. When will Christ
come again? I don't much look at signs and
evidences and so forth that men talk about about the coming of
Christ. I don't much bother with whether we are living in the
last day or whether we're not. We are to be continually looking
for the Redeemer, standing on the tiptoe of faith every day,
Skip, live every day as if you expected Christ to come right
now. Now, that's wrong. Not as if. God give us grace
to live every day expecting Christ to come right now. laboring as
though we didn't expect him to come for another thousand years. You see, there's a work to be
done. God's servants must be sealed.
The elect must be saved. And when the last one is saved,
God's going to destroy this world. Not until then. We will have
signs of it right up until then, but he's not going to destroy
this world until the last one is called out. Sodom, marked
for destruction. God sends his angels to rain
fire and brimstone on that wicked city. God says, I'm going to
destroy the city. I hear folks say, God doesn't
destroy America. God doesn't destroy this earth
with all the perversities going on now. He owes Sodom and Gomorrah
an apology. That had nothing to do with the
time God destroyed the city. The reason God didn't destroy
the city was a lot was still there. There was one there who
was the object of his choice and his love and God would not
destroy the righteous with the wicked and he won't now. There
are some people here in this world redeemed by the blood of
Christ, made righteous in Jesus Christ, the Lord, who must be
called by his spirit. And God is not slack concerning
his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long suffering
toward us, these ones who must be sealed, not willing that any
should perish, but that all should come to repentance and knowledge
of the truth. Turn to Ephesians chapter one. Let me show you how he seals
these people. When God saves a sinner, that
sinner is sealed by the Holy Spirit. Now, remember what the
word sealed means? It means marked. Marked as gods. Marked for security. Marked secretly. Marked. That's what circumcision
was in the Old Testament, wasn't it? How did a fellow know he was
an heir of the covenant that God made with Abraham? He had
a mark. A permanent mark. A mark that
came to him by way of much pain. A mark that God required. A mark
identifying him as God's covenant child. That's called the seal
of the covenant. And here, in Ephesians 1, we
see what was represented in it. Here's the seal of God's covenant.
Here's how God marks you as He is. I get folks call me, write
to me, everywhere I go, folks want me to tell them whether
or not they're saved. I won't tell you. I can't tell you. And any preacher who attempts
to tell you doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't know who's saved
and who's not. I don't make any guesses. I don't
have any idea. I don't have any idea, but I'll
tell you this. God marks you inside. Inside. And the process involves
something called conviction. The process involves something
that exposes your sin and your corruption. The process involves
the humbling of your soul. The process involves God abasing
you. before He lifts you up, slaying
you before He gives you life. Now look at this, Ephesians 1,
13. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word
of truth, the gospel of your salvation. You hear the gospel,
but you hear it like you never heard it before. There comes
a time, Joe, when every chosen redeemed sinner sitting right
where you're sitting right now, here's a man preaching the gospel
and suddenly he hears the word of
the truth of the gospel of his own salvation. Christ did that
for me. God did that for me. The Lord
chose me. Christ redeemed me. He put away
my sins. He bore the wrath of God for
me. He arose for me. And seeing it, hearing it, you
believe. Now watch this. In whom also,
after that you believe, quite literally, having believed, having
believed. As soon as you look out of yourself
to Christ, As soon as you come to the Savior, as soon as you
trust the Redeemer, as soon as you cast your eye on the crucified
one, you were sealed. That's the word. Marked. Sealed
with that Holy Spirit of promise. Permanently sealed. Preserved
and sealed. Best illustration I know of,
which you've heard me tell many times, I'm not much help around
the house, but when Shelby starts canning beans, my job is to salt
and seal. Her hands, you know, they won't
quite tighten those jar lids enough, so we'll break up beans
and she'll put them in the hot water and boil them and get them
all fixed up. Then we'll put them in the jars.
And she pours that boiling hot water in those jars. And I put
a teaspoon of salt and a lid and a ring. tighten that thing
down, put it in the pressure canner, and go break up some
more beans. It's a wonderful job. If you've
never done it, you ought to have the experience. Break up more
beans. And then we'll take those beans
out while we're breaking up beans. And she's sitting there listening
all the time. You'd think I was fixing to sing her a lullaby.
She's listening all the time. She's listening for ping, ping. If she doesn't hear it seven
times, She'll get up out of the chair and go look at one of them.
Dump that one out, it ain't sealed. But you hear that thing ping
and it's sealed. And you know what that dear lady does before
she serves them to me? I've seen her do it a hundred times. She'll
open up those beans. And before she ever puts them
in the pot to cook, she'll eat one of them. Be sure it's all right. How long will I keep? I don't
have any idea. I don't have any idea. They'll keep a long time.
I won't tell you how old some of those beans are. She's going to shoot me. She's
going to keep me long. They'll keep a long time. They're
sealed. They're sealed. Bob Duff, God
the Spirit sealed you a few years ago. Marked you as his. Gave you faith in Christ. That's
the seal. And nothing would happen to you.
That's the seal. Look at verse 30 of chapter 4. Oh, God, make this the motto
of my life every day. And grieve not the Holy Spirit
of God, whereby you are sealed until the day of redemption.
Is it possible that such a worm as I might, by transgression, and sin and
unbelief, grieve God. Grieve Him who once was put to
grief for me. Is that possible? That's what
it says. Around that thought alone, just
that one thought, ought to be sufficient for you and I to constantly
guard our lives lest we grieve our Redeemer, our God and our
Savior. Oh. In 1 Corinthians or 2 Corinthians
chapter 1, you don't need to turn there, there's another distinct
sealing of God's people. God's people are described as
having men like Paul, and Timothy and Silvanus, sealed to them. And those people sealed to his
servants. Paul said, God's established
us with you, and he sealed us. He'd done that, hadn't he? He's
established us with you, sealed us. Now turn to the Song of Solomon,
chapter 4. We're talking about the sealing
of God's people, sealed in eternal election, sealed by blood, sealed
by grace, sealed in the experience of the worship of our God. And
his church is described here as a sealed fountain. A garden
enclosed, verse 12, is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up. a fountain sealed. The Church of Christ is a garden
flourishing with works. Works well pleasing to God. Works
which are performed by His grace. Works which are themselves the
fruit of His Spirit. Works on which He feeds and refreshes. We are His workmanship created
in Christ Jesus unto good works which God has before ordained
that we should walk in them. And here He describes us as a
flourishing fountain, a garden sealed by Him, kept by Him, preserved
by Him for His own delight and satisfaction. All right, turn
to Isaiah 29. a sealed Savior, a sealed book,
and a sealed people. But Isaiah 29 speaks of a sealed
vision. I'll give you a minute to get
there. I want you to read it with me. Here we learn that there are
many in this world to whom the gospel and the word of God is
a sealed vision. They haven't the ability to see
it. Isaiah 29, verse 9. Stay yourselves
and wonder. Cry ye out and cry. They are
drunken, but not with wine. They stagger, but not with strong
drink. Verse 10. For the Lord hath poured
out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes my soul. What a sad explanation of what you see with religious
people around you all the time. What a sad explanation. The Lord
has poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep. and hath closed
your eyes, the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered."
He just, he spread a blanket over him and said, go and sleep
on. And the vision of all is becoming to you as the words
of a book. How was it that John saw it in
the beginning? Sealed. Just can't see. Just can't see. A book that is sealed, which
men deliver to one that has learned, they deliver it to their rabbi,
they deliver it to their preacher, they deliver it to their priest,
they deliver it to their doctor. I just got to tell you, I got
a letter from a fellow yesterday, the day before yesterday, I guess
it was, the doctor so-and-so, Dr. Reverend Twiddle D.D. or
something or another. And he was asking me some questions
and signed it, doctor. And I wrote him back, and I told
him I made this grave mistake because I'm just a poor, ignorant
fellow, and I didn't know any better. I apologize. He didn't
get it. He didn't get it, but that's
all right. I didn't expect him to. Sealed. Deliver the book
to one that's learned. He'd been to seminary. My friend,
Brother Wayne Boyd, over in Oregon, some preacher, I mean some thought
preacher, a fellow in one of the churches there, he's weighed
on him all his life. God's begun to use him. He's been preaching.
I met him a couple of years ago. Remarkable fellow. Good preacher.
I've heard him. Good preacher. This fellow said to him, well,
I can't come down there. I can't come down there and listen to
you because I want an educated preacher. I'm so glad I wasn't there to
hear that. I want an educated preacher. I want somebody who's
got some credentials. I want somebody who's got some
degrees behind his name. Let's deliver the book to the
learned one. Read this, I pray thee. And he won't dare tell you this,
but everything you hear from him says it. I cannot, for it's
sealed. It's sealed. And the book is
delivered to him that is not learned. Well, that fellow can't
read it. He'd been to seminary, got all
the degrees possible. Let's go find a fellow on the streets.
Let's have a home Bible study and see what he says. I can't
read it either. It's sealed and I'm not learned.
I'm not learned. To every sinner left to himself. I don't care how smart he is
or how ignorant he is. I don't care what degree he has
or doesn't have. Every sinner left to himself,
this book is a sealed book. Everything in it is sealed. Everything in it. I reckon, Bill, that means no
point in discussing it with anybody. There's no point in it. Oh, well,
don't you think you ought to witness to me? That's a different
story. Witnessing to them is not arguing with them. Witnessing
to them is telling them the truth and leaving them with it. Just
tell them the truth and leave them with it. Just tell them
the truth and leave them with it. Arguing with them won't do
any good. The book's sealed. The natural
man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they're
foolishness to him. Neither can he know them, because
they're spiritually discerned. All right, here's the fifth thing,
Deuteronomy 32. I'm talking about sealed things.
A sealed Savior, a sealed book, a sealed people. and a sealed
vision. Here in Deuteronomy 32, the fifth
thing that's sealed is a vengeance. The word that's used here, of
course, is a Hebrew word, and it's slightly different in meaning.
It means closed up, ended, stopped. In this chapter, the Lord God
warns the ungodly, those who will not believe because they
have no understanding. And you won't believe if you
have no understanding. The two things come together.
They don't trust Christ, they don't worship God because they
have no understanding. He tells us that vengeance and
wrath, that which shall fall upon them is sealed up for the
time appointed. Hear me, sinner, be warned, be
warned. The wrath of God will fall on
you. Be warned. Verse 34, Is not this
laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?
To me belongeth vengeance and recompense. Their foot shall
slide in due time, for the day of their calamity is at hand,
and the thing that shall come upon them Make haste. The wise man said, because the
sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily. Therefore,
the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
You think God hadn't sent me to hell yet? He's not going to.
Oh, yes, he will. Oh, yes, he will. Number six. And Job, Chapter 14. All who are taught of God come
to Christ and live by him. And all who come to Christ find
as they come to him that their sins are in a bag, sealed up,
and cast behind God's back into the depths of the sea of infinite
forgetfulness. So the sixth thing described
in the scriptures as sealed A sealed thing is a sealed bag. Job chapter
14, verse 14. If a man dies, shall he live
again? All the days of my appointed
time will I wait till my change come. Thou shalt call, and I
will answer thee. Thou wilt have a desire toward
the work of thine hands. Now, read this in its context. Job is speaking here about hope. Hoping for the time of resurrection.
Verse 16. For now thou numberest my steps. Dost thou not watch over my sin? My transgression is sealed up
in a bag that thou and thou sowest up mine iniquities. In ancient times, mariners would
take a man who died at sea and they would put him in a bag and
weight the bag and sew it up. And then they would put another
patch over the place where the bag had opened and they would
seal up the bag. And they'd drop the dead corpse,
weight it into the sea that it might drop down to the bottom
of the sea and there be buried. Job says that's what God did
with my sins. He took my sins, made them his
sons. His son suffered in my room instead
to the full satisfaction of justice until sin had been put away by
the sacrifice of himself. And the Lord God put my sins
in a weighted bag and sewed up the bag. and sealed it and threw
it overboard behind his back into the depths of the sea. The sea of his own infinite forgetfulness. And they are no more. But pastor,
in verse 16, Job asked, Dost thou not watch over my sins? The obvious answer is yes. He watches all the time. All the time. God's looking for
your sin. He's looking for it all the time. All the time. He's looking for
it. Well, he won't have any trouble seeing it. I do. He watches for
it all the time. And he says, I can't find it. Read Jeremiah 50 verse 27. I
can't find it, so I'll bless him. I can't find it, so I'll
hang on to him. I can't find it, so I'll receive
him graciously. I can't find it, so I'll keep
him. Because Christ has put away our sins. All right, one more
sealed thing. turn to Song of Solomon chapter
8 this is a seal desired set me as a seal upon thine heart O blessed husband of my soul
High Priest of God, High Priest of Israel, with the breastplate
bearing the names of God's elect, standing ever accepted in God's
presence, set me as a seal on your heart. Make me to know that
I'm written on your heart. Make me to know by experience
that I'm yours as a seal on your arm. On your arm for your love, your
love, setting me as a seal on your heart as strong as death.
Jealousy is as cruel as the grave, as cruel as hell. It'll never
let go. and your love makes you jealous
for those you love. The coals thereof are the coals
