I want you to turn to the Book
of Luke, the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter 17. St. Luke, Chapter 17. I want to begin
reading with verse 26 and read through verse 33. St. Luke, Chapter
18. or chapter 17 it is, beginning
with verse 26. And as it was in the days of
Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man. They
did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage
until the day that Noah entered into the ark and the flood came
and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the
days of Lot, They did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold,
they planted, they built it. But the same day that lot went
out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and
destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the
day when the Son of Man is revealed. In that day he which shall be
upon the housetop and his stuff in the house, let him not come
down to take it away, and he that is in the field, let him
likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever shall seek to save
his life shall lose it, and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve
it. I want to speak this morning,
the Lord willing, on verse 32 on a woman to be remembered. A woman to be remembered, remember
Lot's wife. I do not know the name of Lot's
wife. She was a nameless world, a nameless
woman in a half-forgotten age. I do not know why the Bible does
not give us her name, but I suppose it was because Lot married outside
of the godly line he married probably a woman who was a heathen
woman and she was not named as was Abraham's wife and Jacob's
wives and so on but nevertheless we want to remember this woman
this morning because the Lord Jesus said remember Lot's wife. Now the text does not say remember
Lot however I believe this morning that we might profitably do so. I believe that we could profit
a great deal from just thinking a little bit about a lot before
we remember lots wide. Now then, I remember how the
scripture in 2 Peter 2, verses 7 and 8, how Peter speaks of
Lot. And I'd like just to read these
verses to refresh your memory this morning. 2 Peter 2, verses
7 and 8 says, And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation
of the wicked, for that righteous man dwelleth among them in seeing
and hearing vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their
unlawful deeds." Now we would never have known that Lot was
a just man if Peter hadn't told us. There was certainly nothing
in the Word of God anywhere to indicate that he was a justified
man, that he was a righteous man. However, Peter tells us
that positionally that this man was a righteous man and that
it Was something that affected his daily character because as
he was in the midst here of these people down in Sodom and Gomorrah
his Righteous soul was vexed from from day to day by their
filthy conversation Now there's a great warning, I believe, in
the history of Lot, and if a professing Christian man, or what we might
say professing Christian men, are so unwise as to conform themselves
to the world as Lot did, even if they keep up the Christian
character, I suppose, as he did in a measure, That they will
gain nothing. They will gain nothing by their
worldly association, but they'll just be vexed from day to day
with the filthy conversation. And that word conversation means
more than talk. It means behavior. Of the ungodly
and they'll be great losers. I believe in their own souls
I believe that a professing believer will be a great loser if he lives
out his days in Association with the people of the world the ungodly
the world and sinners of this world Now there are some warnings
that are pointed out by locks failures and I want to mention
hurriedly just three of them this morning without dwelling
upon them at any length and I want to mention these three failures
of Lott, and there are many today that need to pay heed and take,
I think, a very careful heed to these three things. First
of all, I think his choice of residence, his choice of residence. Surely this needed lesson is
written large across the story of Lott's life. He prepared,
you know, himself. He had gone out and followed
Abraham as Abraham was led out to a place which the Lord would
show him. He went with Abraham. But he preferred, you remember
when there was a strife between the herdsmen, he preferred the
well-watered plains above Abraham's altar. He wanted to go off to
that place where there was nice luscious pastures and he had
an eye for the world and the good things of this world and
he regarded temporal advantage only. And he had no regard for
his or his family's spiritual welfare. He just simply wanted
to get into a place in this world where he could do real good and
where things would be prosperous for him. How many professors
of religion are there now? who, when looking for a place
to live and work, follow His sinful example. All they're interested
in doing is just find a place where we can prosper after the
flesh and prosper materially. We're not so much concerned whether
we're going to be able to sit under the sound of the Word of
God, whether we're going to be in a scriptural church, whether
we're going to be able to hear anybody expound the Word of God,
whether our children will ever get to hear the good things of
the Gospel preached, And declared or not, we're just simply not
concerned about that. All we're interested in is the
almighty dollar. But seek ye first the kingdom
of God and His righteousness ought to regulate our every decision
in this world. It's whether or not our souls
are going to prosper. It's whether or not our children,
their spiritual welfare is going to be looked after. This is the
thing that we're to be concerned about. Well, Lot was not concerned
about this at all. He was only concerned about them
well-watered plains, only concerned about a good place for his calves
and cows to eat grass. He was not concerned about the
never-dying souls of his children, of his family. Now the second
thing I'd call your attention to as being, I think, as an evil
example in the life of Lot is his yielding to the spirit of
worldliness. Now Lot seems to be a type of
that class of Christian who aims to make the best of both worlds,
who are really occupied more with the things of earth than
the things of heaven, occupied more with the things of flesh but in the end, you know, when
he was led out of Sodom and Gomorrah by the hand of the angels that
he lost even his worldly possessions. His life on earth was a wretched
failure made up entirely of what the Bible calls wood, hay, and
stubble. There was no witness for God
and there was no blessing of God upon his family here in this
world. Now Lot, I believe, is a concrete
warning. He's a danger signal for all
Christians who feel a tendency to be carried away by the things
of the world, by the things of time and sense, I believe he's
a concrete warning to every one of them. Now the third thing
I want to mention is his miserable end. Because I believe wretched
indeed must have been the closing days of Lot's life. Cowering
in a cave as we read about it in Genesis chapter 19. stripped
of all of his earthly possession. His sons-in-laws had been destroyed
in Sodom. His wife had been turned into
a pillar of salt and he left face to face with the fruit of
his own awful sin. There he finished out his days
in the cave in the mountains by the city of Zor. Well, I think
this morning that these three examples of Lot's evil doings
is enough to at least arrest our own heart. And we recognize
the fact this morning that we're not bid by the Redeemer, the
Lord Jesus, to remember Lot. But I just wanted to remember
Lot enough to give you those three things. Now we're not also,
certainly not, we're not bid to remember Abraham or Isaac
or Jacob or Sarah or Ruth. But we are bidden by the Lord
Jesus Christ to remember Lot's wife. And that's what we want
to do this morning, so we'll get to this text. Now I believe
the Lord Jesus Christ was speaking here in this text when he said,
remember Lot's wife. He was speaking not to the Sadducees
or the Pharisees, but he was speaking to his own disciples. And he speaks as if we were all
in danger somehow or other of forgetting this subject. That
we all were in danger of forgetting the example here of Lot's wife. And he stirs up our lazy memories
He bids us keep the case before our minds. He says you remember
Lot's wife. Now there are some lessons which
Lot's wife is meant to teach us. And I believe that one of
the primary lessons, if you will take the context here in the
17th chapter of the book of Luke, and I certainly don't want to
take the text out of the context because when you take a text
out of the context you often have a pretext. And you often
end up preaching something that's not so. So what we want to do
is somehow or other leave the text, we want to leave this text
in the context. And if you'll notice here, I
believe it has reference to the last days. And the last days
are here, beloved. I don't know whether you're aware
of it or not or whether you feel that the last days are upon us
or not. But I believe that they're definitely here. And I believe
the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is near. And I believe
that we need to focus upon the second coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ. And we need to be very careful
about the teachings of the Word of God about it. And we need
to beware lest somehow or other we say like those in Peter that
the coming of the Lord, you know, it's way off. That the Lord is
slack concerning His promise. He's not coming as He said that
He would. and somehow or other get it so
far off in our minds that we don't think about it, and it
has no influence upon our minds and hearts. As the Lord's people,
the subject of the second coming of Christ is to be uppermost
in our thinking. We're to remember that Jesus
Christ, He that shall come, will come and will not tarry. We're
to remember that the same Jesus that was caught up into the clouds
and went back to glory, that this same Jesus is coming again. Now, judgment is right down the
road. We believe that God's going to
pour out his judgment upon the wicked world and that the fires
of God's judgment is going to purge this earth and that God
is going to bring men into account for their sin. Now, the emphasis
on materialism is at an all-time high in our day and it seems
to be increasing daily. And the professed people of God
seem to be greater friends of the world now than what we've
ever known them to be, and we must remember lots why. Because
this is a very serious thing, and we need to get the lesson,
we need to get it well fixed in our minds, seeing that the
end of all things is at hand, and that you and I soon will
be summonsed out of this world, taken home to be with the Lord.
Now, the protest that God demands of His people is that we, against
this world, is that we keep ourselves separate from the world. This
is the protest that God demands. God demands, listen, God would
have those of His people, those that know Him, those that know
His Son, those that are in Christ, those who have the Spirit of
God in them, those that walk by faith, In the Word of God,
God would have them to be a separate people in this world. God demands
separation. And you remember he led Abraham
out and separated him from his own family so that Abraham would
live by faith and walk by faith. And Abraham was the father of
the faithful. And here's Lot. And Lot grew tired of, as it
were, living this separate life. And so, of course, he went down
there into Sodom and Gomorrah, there where he could live and
be a worldly man and where he could be involved in the ways
of the world. But God demands that we come
out and be separate. This is what the Lord says, come
out from among them and be a separate, saith the Lord. The love of the
world is death, my friend. Those who claim to sin must perish,
be they whoever they may be. We're to hold the world with
a loose hand, according to what the Word of God teaches here
this morning in Luke 17, and be ready to leave it all at any
time the Lord calls upon us to leave it. Now we're encumbered
in our day. with a host of people who call
themselves Christians but are as much of the world as other
people whose inheritance, I believe, is in the world, whose pleasure
is in the world, whose speech is worldly and who are all together
the world and because they are of the world, the world loves
its own and therefore there is little or no strife between them
and the world. Now this is the kind of people
that we're dealing with in our day and dealing with in our time. The church is so worldly and
the world is so churchy that we hardly know, we can hardly
tell where one ends and the other begins. Separation from the world
is the only way, my friend, to escape. Save yourself from this
untoward generation. We must flee from the world or
we shall perish with it. God's people must come out and
be separate from the world. Now hear me out. I want you to
notice three things about Locke's wife. First of all, I want you
to notice the privileges that she had as a human being living
in God's world. She had privileges and she enjoyed
these privileges, but they didn't seem to have any good effect
upon her life. Now in the days of Abraham and
Lot, true saving religion was scarce. It was very scarce upon
the earth. No Bibles, no preachers, no churches,
no missionaries. The knowledge of God was confined
to a few favored families. The greater part of the inhabitants
of the world were living in darkness, they were living in ignorance
and in superstition and sin. Not one in a hundred had such
a good example, such spiritual society and clear knowledge,
such plain warnings. as did Lot's wife, even though
she lived with this man that we talked about. She had a great
privilege in that she was a favored woman. She had a husband whom
the Bible says, and we read it out of Peter, who was a righteous
man. Like I said, we wouldn't have
known it if Peter hadn't have told us. She had Abraham, who
was the father of the faithful, for her uncle by marriage, and
she had their example in all God's dealings with them. Surely
she heard about how God dealt with Abraham, how God blessed
Abraham at Lot's uncle, and she surely heard something about
the testimony of God from these faithful men. Now, I think she
also was greatly favored of God because the angels came personally
to lead her out of the city. Can you imagine these angels
coming right into Sodom? They did, they'd been over to
Abraham's, visiting him, and they left his place and went
over here to Sodom, and they come into town, and they meet
Lot, and Lot bids them to come to his house, and they said,
no, we'll just stay in the street, because I really think they felt
like they were just about as well off in the street as they
was in this man's house, because he was a worldling himself. But
as it turned out, they did turn in to Lot's house. And you remember
after striking these wicked sodomites blind at the door, you remember
these angels said, now if you got anybody in this city, while
you get them by the head, we got to get out of this city.
We're going to destroy this place. We're going to destroy this place.
Well, you remember the story, but the angels came there to
personally lead them out of the city. And they were leading them
out of the city when Lot's wife, of course, committed her great
sin. Now, I want you to learn something
here. I want you to learn something. Here's a woman that had many
privileges, and she had many blessings, which turned out to
be of no value and no use to her. And I want you to learn
this, that a mere profession of religion And I'm sure she
was a religious professor. I'm sure that she agreed with
concerning the one God that Abraham believed in. But I want you to
know this, that privileges will save no one's soul. You can have
all kinds of privileges. You may hear the best preaching
that there is. You may dwell in the midst of
light and knowledge and holiness and good company and just remain
unconverted and be at last lost forever. Privileges is not enough. It's not enough. Joab was David's
captain. Gehaziah was Elijah's servant. Demas was Paul's companion. Judas
Iscariot was Christ's disciple. And Lot had a worldly, unbelieving
wife. And these all died in their sins
in spite of opportunities. So, my friend, value religious
privileges, but don't trust them. Church members, you this morning
need to realize that you can't trust that. You can't trust it. Children of godly parents, no
ties of blood or no guarantees of grace. Remember that. And
no earthly relationship can possibly do us any good if we are destitute
of saving grace in a spiritual relationship with the Lord Jesus
Christ. You can be a member of the most
godly family. You can have godly parents, praying
parents. that love Christ and attempt
to serve Him, but that's of no advantage to you. You're no better
off than Lot's wife. Because, listen, grace does not
run in the blood. You've got to be born of the
Spirit of God, quickened by God's Spirit, regenerated out of your
spiritual death. You must be brought out of your
sin and brought into a relationship, a right relationship with God,
which is only accomplished by the working of the Divine Spirit.
It is not that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit. And nobody's a Christian
until they're born by the Spirit of God, born from heaven, born
from above. A man can receive nothing. except
he receive it from heaven. You can't receive it from your
daddy or your mother. You've got to receive it from
God. It's got to come down from heaven. And God must put it into
your soul. And until you have that, you're
destitute. You can say, I've got all these
other things. You may have them, all these privileges, but you're
destitute of spiritual life until the quickening of God comes to
your soul. You say, my mother prayed. She
might have prayed, but have you been born from heaven? Has God
quickened your soul? Have you been brought out of
death? Have you been brought to the place where God's Spirit
is the life of God in you? That's the question. And if not,
all these privileges mean nothing. They mean nothing. Absolutely
nothing. And remember this, that nothing
so hardens a man as a barren familiarity with sacred things.
Grow up, listen to people, read the Bible. Some of the worst
people that ever lived in this world were people that listened
to somebody read the Bible to them. You remember that Jesse
James, you remember that his God, giant rebels against God
and His Word. Privileges mean nothing apart
from the regeneration of the Spirit of God. Until God brings
you out of your death, your privileges mean nothing. And so don't take
any confidence in them. Say, I've been resting in that
preacher. Well, I want to destroy the foundation of your confidence
and hope this morning. There isn't anything for you
but eternal death and judgment apart from God intervening in
your situation. You're just as bad as Lot's wife
unless God saves you, unless God delivers you. There's no
hope. This is an individual thing. And grace don't run in the blood.
It guarantees nothing. unless you're in Christ. Now
then, the second thing I want to notice is the sin which Lot's
wife committed. The first thing was her privileges.
The second thing is the sin which she committed. And the very sum
and substance of her sin lies in these three words, she looked
back. She looked back. Now, does this
seem like a very small thing to you? Well, there was far more
in that look than just strikes the eye. It implied far more
than it expressed. I want you to take note of this.
Little symptoms are often the signs of deadly and incurable
diseases. The apple that Eve ate in the
garden, I suppose, was a little thing. But my, what did it lead
to? It led to the death of every
son of Adam. It led to all of the sin, all
of the sorrow, the pain, all the agony, all of the trouble
that's in the world. It led to all of that, but it's
just one little apple to start with. A straw may show which
way the wind is blowing, and one look may show the rotten
condition of a sinner's heart. And here's this woman, she looks
back. Now I think it revealed the true
character of Lot's wife. The world was in her heart, and
her heart was in the world. It told of her secret love of
the world. Her heart was in Sodom, though her body was outside the
city of Sodom. She had left her affections behind
when she fled her home. She left her affections there
in Sodom. Her eye turned to the place where
her treasure was. It's exactly what happened. As
the compass needle turns to the pole, her eye turned to where
her treasure was. And then next, I think it just
told of her disobedience. She looked back. Now the command
was straight and unmistakable. Look not behind thee. That was
the command. Look not behind. We read it in
Genesis 19. Look not behind. That's what
the angel said. It was a matter of faith. He
said, don't look behind you. You just come on, get out of
this place. Don't look behind you. But she
did in disobedience. Now the Bible says to obey is
better than sacrifice and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.
When God speaks plainly by his word, then a man's duty is clear. It's clear. When God says something,
it's right. And when God says something,
then your duty is clear. No need to vote on it. No need
to ask mama or papa about it. No need to say anything to anybody
about it. Take it to the preacher. When
the Bible speaks, the duty is clear. Now listen to me then.
I think it also told of her unbelief. Of her absolute unbelief. She
seemed to doubt. whether God was really going
to destroy Sodom or not. She seemed to doubt that. She
seemed, even though the angel said, come on, get on out, she
said, well, listen now, no danger, why all the haste and all the
fuss? What's all the hurry here? Now listen to me, the moment
that a man begins to think he knows better than God and that
God does not mean anything when he threatens, that man's soul
is in grave danger. Now the Lord meant to bring judgment
upon Sodom and Gomorrah and he was going to do it. But this
woman, my friend, this woman did not believe that God was
going to do this. Somehow or other she just couldn't
believe it and so she had to look back to see. But we see
in verse 24 of Genesis 19, then the Lord rained upon Sodom and
upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven.
And he overthrew those cities and all the plain and all the
inhabitants of the city and that which grew up on the ground.
The Lord, as it were, barbecued those people. The grease ran
out their ears and the meat fell off of their bones. I mean, these
people were reduced to ashes there in Sodom and Gomorrah.
God brought these people into a place of judgment. He didn't
believe it was going to happen. But it happened. God brought
him down. The smoke rose up like the smoke
of a great furnace and God dealt severely with these sodomites
there and those wicked people in all those planes there in
the cities and on the planes. And so my friend they went to
hell I believe on that very day. Now listen to me. Note this.
That this woman was no murderess. She was no adulteress that we
know of. She was no thief. But she was a professor of religion
and she looked back. That was her sin. I'd like to
ask you something this morning. What would it take, what would
it take to get you to look back? What would it take? Every professor of religion,
I believe, will have his day outside the city of Zoar to prove
it. What's going to get you to look
back? Your heart in this world, your heart on the things of this
world. Is the love of the world in you? The scripture says if
a man loved the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
What will it take? I want to tell you something.
If you're not a child of grace, if you haven't been brought by
the Spirit of God into full faith and repentance toward the Lord
Jesus Christ and faith in Christ, there's coming a day when your
heart is going to be proved and you're going to look back. Somewhere
or another, you're going to commit the same sin that Lot's wife
committed. Remember, Lot's wife is the words
of the Lord Jesus Christ. Beware of half-hearted religion. Beware of supposing that you
can be so heavenly minded that you know earthly good and therefore
it's a waste of time to be a true follower of the Lord Jesus Christ
and it's a waste of time to give your heart, to give your heart
to this thing. My friend, God still says, my
son, give me thine heart. That's what he wants. He wants
your heart in this business. And I know a whole lot of people
trying to serve the Lord and their heart's not in it. And
God begins to deal with them and he threshes them and he sifts
them as wheat is sifted until they realize that there's something
wrong. And what's wrong is their heart's
not engaged in this thing. And I want to tell you when the
pressure's on and the heat's turned up and God begins to,
as it were, take the dross out of the gold, that if there is
any gold, I want to tell you this. You'll know something about
what I'm talking about. You'll know something about what
I'm talking about today. What would you... Listen, I've known
some people to turn back and to leave Christ because somebody
called their children down in a public worship service. The
preacher called their children down. They was making a fuss
and they were carrying on in the back row in the back row
of the pews and so they get up and leave and they said we'll
never come back and they quit church and they quit Christ and
they quit forever because somebody called their children down. I
know other people that's quit, I mean left the gospel because
they didn't like what the church did, the way the church voted
on a certain issue. And they said, we don't like
it, we're leaving and that's it. What would it take to get
you to turn back and to leave? You say, well, I don't know whether
people do that really or not. Well, you read the sixth chapter
of the gospel of John. There was a day when many left
the Lord Jesus because of what he preached. And many have left,
how many have left Christ when they found out the truth about
his doctrine. And when the Lord Jesus began
to preach in John chapter six, the doctrine of election, but
no man could come to him except the Father drew him. When the
Lord Jesus began to expound this great truth, then many left him. And the Lord Jesus asked his
disciples, you know what he asked them? He said, will you also
go away? Will you go? And they said, to
whom shall we go, Lord? Thou hast the words of eternal
life. We're staying on you. Well, blessed be God, that if
the people of God will stay on Christ, whatever happens and
whatever they hear and whatever happens, I mean, whatever the
church votes to do or don't vote to do, whatever the preacher
preaches or don't preach, stay on Christ. Stay on Christ. Don't turn back. Don't look back. There isn't anything back there
to turn to. Nothing back there. You remember when the children
of Israel had chosen them a king? And Samuel, he come to him and
he said to him, he said, now the Lord will not forsake his
people for his great namesake. For it pleased the Lord to make
you his people. And you've committed this great
sin and you've added this great sin to all your other sins. But
he said don't turn. He said don't turn away. It's
a vain thing. He said don't turn to vanity.
Stay on the Lord. Stay on the Lord and keep on
going. Because if you turn away, you're just going to go down.
You're going to go down, down, down from truth. Down from God. Down from Christ. Down from the
church. Down, down, down. My friend,
the only way to go is straight on and on with Christ is the
only way to go. You cannot turn back. Beware
of secretly trying to keep in with the world. Beware of it.
Say, well, I think I can walk a thin line. Well, you cannot.
And the day is coming when God's going to show that you, and every
time a whirling sinner that's been trying to keep in with the
world, listen, and he's been trying to flirt with the church,
I'll tell you what, when real trouble and real pressure comes
and the real trial comes, he'll get down on the world's side
just exactly like Locke's wife did. He'd get off the fence,
but he'd get down on the world's side. That's where he'll get
down. He said, I can function better over there anyway. And
he can because he's of the world. And he can function better over
there. Now the third thing I want you to notice quickly and hurriedly
this morning is the punishment which God inflicted on Lot's
wife. The punishment. We had her privileges and we
had her sin, and now the punishment. She looked back. The Bible says,
she looked back and she became a pillar of salt. Now we have here, I believe,
a miracle of judgment. The same hand that gave her life
took that life in the twinkling of an eye, took her life. From
living flesh and blood to a pillar of salt, on the verge of mercy,
because she was already outside the city, on the verge of mercy,
but slain by justice, ere she escaped. A fearful end to come to, was
it not? On the brink of salvation, to be the victim of wrath. Very
shortly she'd be in the clair. But she didn't make it. She didn't
make it. Almost saved, but not quite. She didn't make it. Now listen
to me. This is a fearful end to come
to. Her life was snuffed out in the twinkling of an eye. Now
to die at any time is a solemn thing. To die amidst kind friends
and relations, to die calmly and quietly in one's bed, to
die with the prayers of God's people still sounding in your
ears, to die with good hope through grace in the full assurance of
salvation, leaning on the Lord Jesus Christ, to die even so,
my friend, I say, is serious business. It's serious business
to die. But to die suddenly, And in a
moment, in the very act of sin, to die in full health and strength,
to die by the direct interposition of an angry God, this is fearful
indeed. And that's how this woman died.
God killed her right there on the spot. A hopeless end it was.
Now there are cases where one hopes as it were against hope
about the souls of those that we see go down to the grave.
We hope. We just hope that they had salvation. We just hope that somewhere or
another that God had saved them, that they were in the Lord. But
charity itself can say nothing when the soul has been summonsed
away in the very midst of wickedness, without even a moment's time
for thought or prayer. And such was the end of Lot's
wife. Not, I mean, there's not, what
could charity say? Could the preacher get up and
say, well, she must have been a Christian. She must have been
a child of God. She must have been. Could the
preacher say anything? Charity could say nothing. Could say
nothing. It was a hopeless end. She went
to hell. Yes, she is a monument of divine
wrath. Here is a beacon to war. coming generations. The pillar
of salt, it may have vanished from the shore of the Dead Sea
long ago, and it was. I remember reading John Gill
said that it had long ago been dissolved and it was gone. But
it stands yet on the field of sacred history to warn all professors
of religion who are walking on the fence It stands on the pages
of sacred history to warn them. Are you look warm and cold? Are
you? Where's your heart? What kind
of condition is your heart in? Are you halting between two opinions? Are you disposed to go back to
the world? What's your condition? Are you
secretly cherishing some besetting sin? Is there some darling evil
habit which you cannot tear from your heart? You cannot tear it
out of your heart? Is there something, are you trifling
with eternal matters? Are you trifling with sins, little
sins you say? Are you just trifling with the
things of God? How is it with you this morning?
I want to sound this text in your ears, Luke 17 and 32, remember
Lot's wife. Just remember Lot's wife. Whatever
be your condition, whatever it be, I want you to remember Lot's
wife. Jesus would have me tell you
that. Remember Lot's wife. Father, we thank you this morning
for the privilege of preaching your word For the privilege,
our Father, of bringing these things out before your people,
sobering though they be, our Father, wouldest thou use them? Wouldest thou, our Father, this
morning affect somebody by this message? Bring, our Father, fruit,
O God, not only in the lives of others, but in our own lives.
We repent of our sin, of our coldness, of our triflings. We repent. And we look up to
Thee, O Holy God, and pray for a time of quickening and a time
of revival in every one of our souls. And we pray for your churches
that there shall be, our Father, there's so much coldness and
so much whirliness and whirly-mindedness in your people. And I just pray
that thou would begin a great work and stir the hearts of your
people in many places, our Father. And give us, our Father, in this
day the ability Lord to overcome we just feel that there's such
a great blanket of coldness that just simply is over all of our
hearts and how Desperately we need thy help and the power of
the spirit to overcome in these difficult and testing times Refresh
our hearts now, our Father, and give us a desire for Thee and
toward Thee and toward Your Word and the things of the Word. Increase
our appetite and give us greater love for Thee, O God. We pray
in Jesus' name and for His sake alone. Amen.
