John chapter 10. I want to read the 11th verse down
through verse 13. 11 through 13. I am the good shepherd. The good
shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an
harling and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not,
seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth. And the wolf catcheth
them, and scattereth the sheep. The harling fleeth, because he
is an harling, and careth not for the sheep. I want to speak this morning
and talk to you about the harling, about the harling. If you would
hold your place here in the scripture and turn back to the book of
Job, the book of Job, chapter 7. Let me read here about three
verses to you concerning the harling. beginning with verse
1 of Job chapter 7, says, Is there not an appointed time to
man upon earth? Are not his days also like the
days of a harling? As a servant earnestly desireth
the shadow, And as an harling looketh for the reward of his
work, so am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearsome
nights are appointed to me." This phrase in verse 2, as an
harling looketh for the reward of his work. Keep that in mind. Now, I believe that every faithful
preacher of the gospel of Christ ought to be financially supported
and maintained by the people of God. I certainly believe that
most people believe that that is what the Word of God teaches. It is written in the Law of Moses,
Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the
corn. That is to say, the Lord has
ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the
gospel of 1 Corinthians 9 and verse 9. Now the laborer, it
is said in Luke chapter 10 and verse 7, that the laborer is
worthy of his hire, yet God's servants are not harlings. They are not harlings. Now the
difference between the mere harling and the faithful shepherd, the
faithful pastor, the faithful preacher of the Word of God is
this, that the end for which the harling labor The end for
which the harling labors, it is for his hire. It's just simply for what he
can get out of it. He cares not for the sheep. He
cares not for God's sheep, but only for what he gains from the
sheep. Only what he gets from the sheep.
Whereas the true shepherd labors not just for hire, but he labors
for the sheep, and he's interested and concerned for the sheep. His goal, his motive, and his
object, and his labor is the welfare of the sheep of Christ. He's concerned about what happens
to the sheep. We read here in the 10th chapter
of John that the harling, and not the shepherd whose own the
sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep,
and fleeth, and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The harling fleeth, because he
is a harling, and he careth not. for the sheep. He doesn't care
for the sheep. Now throughout the history of
the church, God's people have been ill served by mere harlings. Isaiah in the book of Isaiah
chapter 56 verses 9 through 11 He complained of the preachers
in his day calling them beasts who come only to devour His watchmen
are blind. He said they're ignorant. They're
all dumb dogs. They cannot bark sleeping lying
down loving to slumber yay, they're greedy dogs and which can never
have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand. They
all look to their own way, every one for his gain from his quarter. Now these are the very men of
which Jeremiah wrote in Jeremiah 6 and 13, from the least of them
even unto the greatest of them everyone is given to covetousness
and from the prophet even unto the priest everyone dealeth falsely. And so it's talking about these
harlings. Now this is what God says also
by the mouth of Ezekiel in Ezekiel 34 and 2. To these worthless hirelings,
the hireling shepherds, he said, Woe be unto the shepherds of
Israel that do feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed
the flock? And the Apostle Paul warned the
church at Philippi of the self-seeking, the self-serving preachers among
them. And he said, they are men who
seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ. Such
men are the enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction,
whose god is their belly, and whose glory is their shame, who
mind earthly things. That's found in Philippians 2
and 21 and chapter 3 verses 18 through 19. Now this then is
that black mark which the false prophet must ever wear. He labors
for gain, for personal gain. The pulpits of our land, as we
know this morning, are full of such men as this who are laboring
just for their own personal gain, whose God is their belly, and
who just simply make merchandise of the people of God. Now, and
they are not hard to spot, I do not believe, because they fleece
the sheep to enrich themselves, and you can pretty well tell,
and we'll identify these men for you. He that is an harling,
John chapter 10, verse 11 and 13, there are harlings out in
the world, and they're in the pulpit, and they're making gain
of God's people, using the people of God. Now, the harling always
has his ear to the ground, so as to speak. He always knows
what the people want to hear, and he preaches accordingly,
just according to what the people want to hear. Like a slick politician,
he determines his policy by the opinions of his audience, by
those that will listen to him. Occasionally, he will touch upon
something that is controversial, just simply to keep up an appearance
as being somebody who is against evil or against something that
the general population would consider to be evil. But he does
not deviate far from the acceptable doctrines, from the acceptable
teachings and customs and traditions of those who are his best financial
supporters. When opinions change, you watch
him, and he'll change too. He'll change to suit the situation,
suit the occasion. Now I want you to notice, I want
to give you some marks of a harling, and I want you to listen carefully
to what I'm saying to you this morning. You listen. This will
become important to you. If it's not, if you don't think
it is today, it'll become important to you maybe down the road. You
listen to me. And now any man, number one,
any man who begs for money in the name of God is a harlot. Now you listen carefully to what
I'm saying and I want to try to clear this up. I want to try,
if I can, to explain what I mean by this. Any man who begs for
money in the name of God is a harlot. That man who says that God has
given me this work to do for him and then tells men that it
cannot be done without their help is a liar. He's a liar and
he's a hireling. Now if God tells a man to do
something, he can do it. He can do it and he will do it
if God really tells him to do it. Now I want to comment just
a little bit on this here because I don't want anyone to get the
idea that God does not use means to support his work. God certainly
does use human means. God uses human instruments. God does use faithful men and
women who are dedicated to the cause of Christ, who love Christ,
who love the gospel of redeeming grace to support and maintain
those who faithfully preach it. But I want you to understand
when I say that a man who begs for money in the name of God
is a harling, what I'm saying is that a man who will beg for
money in the name of God and tell you that God's going to
fail and His purpose is going to lose out, if you do not do
such and such and so and so, I'm telling you that that man
is a harling. But I'm telling you out of the
same side of my mouth, if you please, that those whom God raises
up, and those whom God calls, and those whom God purposes to
do a work for the glory of His name, to fulfill His gospel purpose
in His day, are people who God will raise up alongside of them,
those that have means. God will put them in a position
of means. God will give them the ability
to help that man. He doesn't have to get up and
beg. He doesn't have to get up and beg anybody. He stands and
God will raise up those who will stand with him and God will raise
them up And if they're not right where he is they're off somewhere
else But God will give them a remembrance of him and money will be sent
support will be given and that man will be able to stand and
proclaim the gospel of God's grace and will be able to do
it faithfully and God will see to it that he is Maintained God
will see to it And a hireling is one who will beg for money
in the name of God. Now the man who begs in the name
of God, I believe, has a beggar for a God. I certainly do not
believe that the God of the Bible is in the begging business. He
is not in the begging business and we ought not to belittle
God by getting up and say we represent God and then beg men
to support God lest he be cast down off of the throne and be
unable to fulfill the mission that he has purposed to fulfill
in the lives of the sons of Adam. God will accomplish his purpose. Now then, he's a harling then,
this man, and he's not the servant of the living God. Number two,
any man who enriches himself by the work of the ministry is
a harling. Now you listen to me carefully
here. I cannot find a single prophet Neither can I find an
apostle or a creature in the Word of God who either sought
or retained material wealth, except those who are clearly
identified as being false prophets. God's servants do not seek wealth,
neither do God's servants seek luxury. We're not seeking a million-dollar
home, and we do not want an air-conditioned doghouse for our dog. We know
of some preachers that have had that, and some preachers that
have fleeced the people of God in order to have those luxuries
in this world. Listen, if it fell into the hands
of a true servant of God, if wealth would fall into his hands,
that individual would not keep that wealth. He would not use
it selfishly, all of it upon himself and lavish upon himself
the fine things of this world. I believe the true servants of
God have always been willing to give to the poor and not to
rob and fleece the poor. I say to you that a man who enriches
himself by the work of the ministry is a harlot. He's a harlot. I
want you to understand. I'm not saying a man who is supported
by the work of the ministry or a man whose life is maintained
and his home is maintained. That's not what I'm talking about.
I say a man who enriches himself. A man who becomes wealthy through
the ministry. A man who becomes wealthy, who
does not give that money away and does not give it to the support
and help of others, that man is a harling as far as I'm concerned
if he's building up a big bank account in the ministry. Now
then, the third point is this, the third mark. Any man who knows
the truth of God but will not preach it for any reason is a
harling. He's a harlot. Now, I hear men
say, I know the Bible teaches the doctrines of grace, but I
cannot preach them openly in my church. Why not? There is
but one reason, my friend. There is but one reason. He knows
that if he preaches honestly what is taught in the Word of
God, he would be run off. That he would lose his pulpit
that he would split the church and that disastrous things would
occur from his standpoint. In other words, he would lose
his salary, his security, his retirement, etc. He would lose
all of these benefits and therefore he cannot afford, simply stated,
he cannot afford from a flesh standpoint to preach the unadulterated
word of God and the gospel of free grace. His concern is not
for the truth of God, the glory of Christ, and the souls of men. His only concern is his own personal
welfare. And is this not a harling, I
ask? I believe that he is indeed a
harling. Now the next thing. Any man who
alters, any man who trims, his message to suit his congregation
is unhearly. Now let me explain what I mean
by that. The man who preaches one thing at home and then goes
off somewhere else, gets into a Bible conference where there's
a bunch of sovereign grace preachers who are faithful preachers of
the gospel, and he gets up and preaches the grace of God like
he always preaches it every place he goes, but is a liar. This man is a harlot. One thing
he preaches on Sunday morning when there's a crowd there and
several people who would never show up to church any other time,
and then on Wednesday night when there's just a few there that
he knows loves the Word of God, he preaches another thing. In
other words, he'll preach a soft doctrine on Sunday morning and
a hard doctrine on Wednesday night because there isn't anybody
there to hear it. Therefore they won't anyone brand him as being
a a hyper Calvinist or an antinomian because he's preaching hard doctrine. Don't you see? Well, this man
is a harlot Well, he does so simply because he is a harling.
He seeks only the financial gain, only the applause, the approval,
the recognition he gets from men. God have mercy on the church
who has a covetous, greedy harling for a pastor. Such a man like
Esau has sold his own soul for a pot of beans, and he'll sell
yours cheaper than that. Now you better believe what I'm
telling you, friend. I'm telling you the truth. Many of the preachers
of our day, many of the preachers of our very day, here are offering
Jesus Christ as a kind of religious aspirin for all of life's problems. They want a following. And they
want the money that they can get out of selling the souls
of men and selling short the Lord Jesus Christ. They offer
Christ, I said, as a religious aspirin to people for the problems
of life. They say things like this, that
if you accept Jesus, As your personal Savior, He will solve
all your marriage problems, He'll solve all your financial problems,
He'll solve your health problems, and your drug problems, and your
drinking problems, and you'll find complete happiness in your
life. Well, my friend, this man is
a harling that preaches that. Such preaching, I believe, is
contrary to the words of our Lord. For He said, I'm telling
you what Jesus said. I told you what the harling preacher
would tell you, but I'm telling you now what the Lord Jesus Christ
would tell you. In John 16, 33, He says, think
not. Or He said this, in this world
you shall have tribulation. In this world, you'll have trouble. Does that sound like that if
you accept Jesus, all your trouble is going to be gone? Now, think
not, he said again, I'm come to send peace, but a sword and
a man's foes shall be those of his own household. Matthew 10,
34 through 36. The time cometh again, Jesus
said, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth
God's service. John 16 and 2. And then again
in 2 Timothy 3 and 12, the Word of God says, they that live godly
in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. I'm just showing
you the difference between the message of the harling preacher
and the Word of God, what the Word of God actually teaches.
If you would take the time to read in 2 Corinthians 11, 23
through 33, you'll find that the Apostle Paul began to encounter
severe problems and difficulties in his life only after he met
the Son of God. Only after he bowed his knee
in full submission and surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ, then
his life became full of trials and full of hard and difficult
situations. Well, let me make it clear to
you this morning that the sinner who truly comes to the Lord Jesus
Christ and by faith comes to Him and bows his knee to the
Lordship of Christ, he too will have earthly problems unsolved. His bank account will not be
healed. His physical health will not
be restored. He just simply comes to be saved
from sin by the power and Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ now
hear me out He comes to the Lord for mercy and grace and a perfect
righteousness as the hymn writer said Wealth and honor I disdain
earthly comforts Lord our vein these will never satisfy Give
me Christ or else I die The true repentant sinner comes to Christ
for mercy and grace, and he doesn't come to get Jesus as an aspirant,
a religious aspirant that's going to solve all of his difficulties
in this life. Do not be deceived by these religious
hirelings, these religious hucksters. who would tell you that God does
not want you to have trials and troubles and difficulties because
earthly trials come from God and they're intended to wean
us from this world and the things of this world and cause us to
look more longingly and lovingly to the Lord Jesus Christ. When
the Lord saves us and makes us His own, whatever He is pleased
to bring to pass in our lives, will be for our good and for
His glory, and we must bow our knee to that. Whatever it is,
be it success or failure, be it sorrow or joy, sickness or
health, poverty or riches, life or death, be assured that His
grace is sufficient for thee. And my friend, we must come back
to that old song that Mike led us in a few minutes ago. It is
still desperately true that faith is the victory and there is no
religious aspirin, my friend, to take care of all of our situations. And God deal with the man who
would give us the impression that just simply to take Jesus
is to solve every problem that we have. It is not true, my friend. God saves sinners from sin, but
the Bible is full of testimony to prove that people of the people
of God are poor and afflicted and tried and tested people in
this land, and that as they travel through life, that they'll experience
so many, many heart-wrenching difficulties that they must lean
heavily upon the grace of God only to sustain them and keep
them in this world. My friend, that's a lie. The
harling will lie to you. and trim and cut his message
and make people think that the way to go is to go with Jesus
and be victorious and be successful. Well my friend, the one who truly
goes with Jesus in faith will be victorious But successful
from the world standpoint I say if a man's a success in the eyes
of the world He undoubtedly isn't in the sight of God if he is
in the sight of God He won't be I'm sure in the eyes of the
world mark it down mark it down Okay, now there are many false
prophets. We read in 1st John 4 and 1 let me read a scripture
to you 1st John chapter 4 and verse 1 Listen to what it says
here It says, Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the
spirits whether they're of God, because many false prophets are
gone out into the world. These false prophets. Let me,
if I can, to further identify these false prophets, because
the scriptures abound with warnings to God's elect about false prophets. Now, here are four marks, which
I want to give you in closing this morning. by which you can
always identify. A false prophet. You can always
identify them, brother. Let me tell you something we
don't have blinders on. The people of God have an anointing
from the Holy One and they know all things. The people of God
are not deceived. The people of God know the truth. The truth has been revealed to
them. They have some experience. The
people of God have been experientially tested and tried. They know something
about the way God leads people. They've read the Bible, they've
studied the Bible, they've made the Scriptures their daily diet. The people of God know some things. And I want you to understand,
there are four marks by which you can always identify a false
prophet. Many false prophets are gone
out into the world. Hear me, they're harlins in the
pulpit. And hear me, there are those
false shepherds that would lead your soul astray. Number one,
let me give you these four marks. I'm not going to preach much
on them, but I'm going to give them to you, and I want you to
listen carefully to me. A false prophet will always,
he will always deny God's absolute sovereignty in salvation. He'll deny it. Now he may allow
that God is sovereign in creation. He may allow that God created
the heavens and the earth. He may allow that God is sovereign
over the elements of the world in providence. But he will not
acknowledge God's sovereignty in salvation. Though it is most
plainly affirmed in the Word of God that God is sovereign
in salvation, that He has withheld from the wise and the prudent
the knowledge of God's ways and the knowledge of God's salvation,
the knowledge of free mercy in Jesus Christ. God hid it from
the wise and the prudent and has revealed it unto babes. And
then you can read it in Romans 9 verses 8 through 26, which
I don't have time to read that this morning, but that great
chapter on God's sovereignty in Romans 9 shows that salvation
is indeed a divine project and it's not a human project. It's
God's work. It's God's work in the first
part, in the middle part, and in the end part. Salvation is
altogether of the free grace of God. A false prophet will
deny that. He'll say that man's got something
to do with it. Now, secondly, listen to this. A false prophet
will always deny the efficacy of the blood of Jesus Christ. Now, listen to me now carefully
as I explain this. He will always deny the efficacy
of Christ's blood. He does not deny that Christ
died for sinners. He'll say that Jesus died for
all, but he denies that the blood of Christ actually atoned for
and put away the sins of those people for whom he died. He denies that. And that also
his blood guarantees the salvation for all whom it was shed. He denies that. He says that
it's possible that Christ died for some who will never experience
deliverance, never be saved, that Christ shed his blood on
Calvary that God nailed his son to a cross and exacted from him
his life's blood flowed out of his veins for some who was already
in hell at the time that he shed his blood. They'll say that they
believe that Jesus died for everybody alike. And my friend, this is
contrary to the Word of God because this, the Word of God, teaches
in unmistakable terms that Christ died for His sheep. In Isaiah 42, it says that He
will not fail or be discouraged. Meaning that Jesus Christ will
accomplish that mission upon which God sent him into this
world and he came you remember in Matthew 1 and 21 he came to
Save his people from this his name should be called Jesus for
he shall save his people from their sins and Isaiah 53 verses
8 through 11 and for the transgression of thy people was he stricken. The Lord Jesus Christ was stricken
for the transgressions of God's people. You can read it in Hebrews
9 and 12 and 16 and chapter 10 of Hebrews verses 10 through
14. Let me just read that one particular
scripture to you there this morning. Hebrews 10 verses 10 through
14, by the which will we are set apart or sanctified through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every
priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same
sacrifices which can never take away sins, but this man After
he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever set down on
the right hand of God from henceforth Expecting till his enemies be
made his footstool For by one offering my you ought to memorize
this verse of scripture for by one offering this verse of scripture
will dispel a many a doubt from your heart this verse of scripture
will give you consolation in life and consolation in the hour
of death for by one offering he hath perfected Forever them
that are set apart into God by one offering. He has made perfect
all those things always deny that and say, well, you know,
you're saved if you do this. And the death of Christ can't
save anybody unless you are willing and unless you somehow or other
join to that your own faith or your own repentance or something.
But my friend, the blood of Jesus Christ was shed to save the people
of God, and it certainly will do that. But a false prophet
in the third place will always deny the sufficiency of God's
grace alone to save sinners. Always deny it. Now hear me out.
He would never openly make such a denial. I've never met a Baptist
yet. I've never met anybody of religious
denominations yet. that would openly deny that God
saves sinners by grace. Every one of them would say amen.
Every denomination, every preacher I ever met would say amen. If
you quote Ephesians 2, 8 and 9 to him, they all say amen. But my friend, he asserts that
God deals with all men alike in grace. It's what he's saying.
Though some perish and some are saved, in other words, it is
not God's grace alone that determines salvation and makes the difference
in sinners' lives. I do not believe that God deals
alike with all sinners in grace. I do not believe that. If he
did, then every sinner would be saved just like I am. If God dealt with all men alike.
It was the grace of God that turned me from my rebellious
ways and turned me from sin, turned me from the very path
that would lead to eternal everlasting destruction, and turned me about
and set me on the path to eternal glory. It was the grace of God
alone that did that. Now if all sinners, I've got
brothers that are lost, I've got sisters that are perishing,
my own family, and the only reason why is because God has not dealt
with them in grace as He dealt with me. I'll tell you it's God
that makes it. Who hath made thee to differ?
Who's made you to differ? And beloved, what have you got
that you didn't receive from the hand of God? Paul said in
1 Corinthians 4 and 7. Now hear me out. As the people
of God, we know that it's God's grace alone that is responsible
for our being in Christ. It's the grace of God alone,
and we cannot lay it to our own merit. We cannot say it's because
we were a little smarter and other people a little dumber,
that we were a little bit more intelligent, knew a good situation
when we saw it. No, my friend, it was because
of the because of the grace of God, because of the effectual
working of God's grace and power in our lives. Glory be to His
name. Glory be to His name. Now this
is in opposition to what the Holy Scriptures teach this idea. That God deals with all sinners
just alike, and it's only the smart, it's only the intelligent,
it's only the bright, it's only those who've got a tender heart
that turns to God. Paul the Apostle didn't have
a tender heart, but he was turned to God by God's free grace. The woman at the well didn't
have a tender heart. She didn't have a life that was
perfect or a life that was becoming to one becoming a saint. But
God saved her and turned her to himself. And so I'm telling
you today that salvation is altogether of God's grace. You can read
it in Romans 9 and 16. where it says that it's not of
him that willeth nor of him that runneth, but it's of God that
showeth mercy. And then those verses I just
mentioned, Ephesians 2, 8 and 9, and then 2 Timothy 1 and 9,
where it says, who has saved us and called us with a holy
calling, not according to our own works. but according to his
own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus
before the world began. And so my friend, you see that
it's not of works, it's not of our merit. It's all together
of the grace of God, all together the free grace of God. And then
a false prophet, lastly, will always give you something to
do, to merit. God's favor. Mark it down. He'll give you something to do. He will have you to understand
that your works, to one degree or another, do merit something
before God. If not in justification, in sanctification. if not in justification or sanctification,
in a heavenly reward in the end. The pie-in-the-sky business later
on, you know. Somewhere or another, your works
will merit something before God. You, what you do will either
cause it to rain on your potato patch and not on another fellow's
potato patch. In this life, it will either
bring some merit somewhere. It'll earn you something before
God. That man is a false prophet that
tells you that. He's a false prophet. Now hear
me out. The Word of God everywhere denounces
man's works as useless and abominable. Isaiah 64 and 6. Now this is
a verse that I hope all of you are very much acquainted with
and I think that you probably are, but listen to it. But we're
all as an unclean thing, the scripture says, and all our righteousness
are as a menstrual rag, menstrual cloth. And we all do faith as
a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Does it sound like those kind
of people are in a position to do something that would be meritorious
before God? Something that would turn a thrice
holy God toward them and become benevolent toward them because
of something they are? Absolutely not. It is evident
here by what the Word of God says that it's not so. And then
I want you to look at this verse of Scripture in Romans chapter
11. Romans chapter 11 and verse 6,
and we close by reading this scripture. Listen to it. And
if by grace, then is it no more of works, otherwise grace is
no more grace. But if it be of works, then is
it no more grace, otherwise work is no more work. Mark it down,
my friend, that a man is a false prophet who give you something
to do to merit God's favor. Tell you that there is something
somewhere in the system that you can do that will merit the
favor of a thrice holy God. That a fallen son of Adam can
bring out of his treasure something and offer it to God and turn
God's heart toward him. My friend, if God is ever turned
toward you, It'll be by free grace alone. It'll be because
of who He is, not because of who you are, not because of what
you are. It'll be because God, by nature,
is a God of love and mercy and kindness, and He is a benevolent
God toward all of those that He chose in Christ before the
foundation of the world. And all of those will come to
enjoy the benefits of God's eternal salvation. I tell you this morning,
I want to caution you, I want to caution you about the harlings
and the false prophets of our day because there's a whole lot
of them around and I'll tell you sometimes, sometimes it is
difficult and I know that some people have a struggle trying
to identify who it is that's preaching the word of God, who
it is that's telling the truth. Telling the truth on Jesus, who
it is that's talking the truth. But I believe this morning, if
you're interested, that you could listen and you could meditate
a while upon what we've said and that it would be of some
benefit to you, of some help to you, and some encouragement
to you if you are in the way of the Lord and if you this morning
have been following the Lord Jesus Christ, haven't been duped
by or deceived by a false prophet. that it ought to be some encouragement
to you this morning to have these things pointed out to you. May
God bless you. Now, I'm going to be aware that
you've given us this time together this morning. We thank you for
your precious word. Do thou bless our Father and
give encouragement through your truth. And do Thou keep all of
our hearts, keep these dear sheep which Thou hast purchased with
Your own blood, and deliver them, Father, that they be not swept
away with the ill and evil doctrines of this day. Grant them to stay
on the Lord and stay on Your truth. I pray it in Jesus' name. Preserve them and keep them.
In His name, who loved them and gave Himself for them. Amen.
