What does the Bible say about Jesus being the light?

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the true light that lights every man, revealing the nature of God and illuminating human understanding.

In John 1:9, Jesus is described as the true light that lights every man who comes into the world. This signifies that Christ is the ultimate revelation of God, illuminating the darkness of human understanding and sin. He is the light that exposes the true nature of God and provides clarity about our condition as fallen beings. As seen in John 14:9, Jesus states, 'He that hath seen me hath seen the Father,' illustrating that knowing Christ equates to knowing God.

John 1:9, John 14:9

Why is it important that Jesus is our life?

Jesus is important because He embodies life itself, and our relationship with Him is foundational for spiritual existence and acceptance before God.

John 1:4 states, 'In him was life, and the life was the light of men.' This underscores the centrality of Christ as the source of all spiritual life. His life is not only the essence of existence but also the means by which we are justified before God. Colossians 3:4 further affirms this when it says, 'When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.' Our spiritual vitality and standing before God hinge upon our union with Christ, making Him essential for every believer's life and faith.

John 1:4, Colossians 3:4

How do we know if we are in Christ?

We can know we are in Christ by our faith in Him, which is the evidence of our relationship and acceptance in Him.

The question of knowing one's state in Christ is addressed through the lens of faith. As mentioned in the sermon, 'faith is the evidence of things not seen,' implying that our belief in Christ serves as the confirmation of our standing with Him. Romans 8:1 highlights that 'there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,' which reassures believers of their safe position in Him. If we rest in Christ and trust in His finished work, we can confidently affirm our identity in Him.

Romans 8:1

What does it mean that the darkness comprehended the light not?

It means that darkness cannot overcome or extinguish the light of Christ, illustrating the invincibility of His grace.

John 1:5 states, 'And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.' Here, darkness symbolizes sin and the inability to grasp or oppose the divine light that is Christ. This comprehension refers to the inability of darkness to overpower the light, signifying that the grace of God is irresistibly effective. The light of Christ brings illumination and salvation, overpowering the darkness of sin, thus ensuring that those chosen by God will ultimately respond to His grace.

John 1:5

Why is preaching the gospel important?

Preaching the gospel is essential because it bears witness to the light of Christ and calls individuals to believe and find life in Him.

The sermon emphasizes the importance of proclaiming the gospel, as seen in John 1:7, where John the Baptist was sent to bear witness of the light that all men might believe. Preaching is not merely an obligation; it is a vital means through which God draws individuals to faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel is a message of life, hope, and truth, and it commands a response of belief. Thus, effective preaching should focus on revealing Christ’s person and work, encouraging listeners to trust in Him for salvation and eternal life.

I also want to thank this church
for your generosity to me, and at this time, you've been such
a blessing, and I tell you, I just feel so grateful to be part of
this assembly. What a blessing. Look in verse 1 and 2 of Genesis
chapter 1. In the beginning, God created
the heaven and the earth, and the earth was without form and
void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep." How thick
that darkness must have been. I try to—I don't know how you
imagine thick darkness, but I'm trying. How thick, how dark That
darkness must have been. Darkness was upon the face of
the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon
the face of the waters, and God said, Let there be light. And there was light. Now, can you imagine the brightness
of that light? We go from the thickness of this
darkness to the command of God, let there be light. And can you
even begin to imagine the brightness of the light when he said, let
there be light? Now, I do not begin to understand
this, but do you know that when God said, let there be light,
the sun and the moon and the stars had not yet been created?
Look in verse 16 of Genesis chapter one. And God made two great lights,
the greater light to rule the day, speaking of the sun, and
the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also,
and God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon
the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to
divide the light from the darkness. And God saw it was good, and
the evening and the morning was the fourth day. When God said, Let there be light,
this was not a created light. This is the same light that met
Paul on the road to Damascus. And Acts chapter 26, verse 13
says, A light met him that was above the brightness of the sun. Now, what is brighter than the
sun? The way to answer that is, who
is brighter than the sun? S-O-N, light, is infinitely greater
than S-U-N, light. And when I see this, I just put
it in that big, ever-growing category of things that I do
not understand, but most certainly believe. Light be, and light was. Now would you turn back to John
chapter one, this is our text. We read in verse four, In him,
in the Lord Jesus, was life, and the life was the light of
men. I've entitled this message, The
Life, The Light. The life was the light of men. Now, John begins in verse four
with this incredibly important phrase, in him was life. How many times do we read this
phrase in the scriptures, in him? Chosen in him, redeemed
in him, called in him, accepted in him. Read this phrase over
and over and over again in the Scriptures, in him, and it's
such an important phrase. Let me give you some Scriptures
where this is used. For instance, it pleased the
Father, Colossians 119, I think it is, it pleased the Father
that in him should all fullness dwell. Listen to this, Colossians
2, 9. In him, in the Lord Jesus Christ
dwelleth. all the fullness of the Godhead. Now, who in the world can describe
that? The fullness of holiness? The fullness of sovereignty?
The fullness of justice? The fullness of wisdom? The fullness
of grace? Whatever's in God. And that's
vastly infinite. In Him dwells all the fullness
of the Godhead in a body, contained in the body of the Lord Jesus
Christ. who holds the universe in the
palm of His hand. That's how infinite He is. The
infinite became infant. All the fullness of God dwells
in His body. When He was that seed in His
mother's womb, as the virgin-born Christ, all the fullness of God
dwelled in Him. Now, this is not something you
can explain, is it? You're amazed, you worship, but
it's not something that can be explained in him. There's therefore
now no condemnation. Here's another scripture. There's
no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. Now, outside of Christ Jesus,
there's nothing but condemnation, nothing but the wrath and judgment
of God and the justice of God, and it ought to be so. But in
him dwells There's no condemnation. There's therefore now no condemnation
to them that are in Christ Jesus. The Scripture says we're accepted
in the Beloved. That's where my sentence is.
It's in the Beloved. Nowhere else. In Him. Now, when you take in this room,
everybody in this room, what's that mean? Everybody in this
room. If you're outside of this room,
you're not in this room, are you? Everybody in this room, in Him, in the
Lord Jesus Christ, in Him by representation. This is everybody
He represented. And this is what he's talking
about when he talks about in him. Now look what it says next
in verse four. In him was life. In him was life. He has life independently. What does that mean? That means
he doesn't have needs the way you and I do. I need to eat.
I need to drink. I need to have shelter. I need
to have clothing. I need to have rest. I have needs. He has no
needs. He is the independent God. He is completely independent. I love that passage of Scripture
in Acts chapter 17, where Paul says to those people on Mars
Hill, he says, he's not worshipped with men's hands as though he
needed anything. Do you know that God doesn't
need you? He really doesn't. I've heard. God can't spell church without
you, or I mean, we can't spell church without you. God can.
God can. He doesn't need you to spell
church, does he? We so infinitely need him. Now, in him, was life. He says, if I were hungry, I
wouldn't tell you that he's the source of life. He's the cause
of life. He's the creator of life. He's the state, the sustainer
of life. All those things are true, but
that's not what this passage of scripture says. It says in
him was life. In him was life. Turn with me to Colossians 3.
I want to give you a couple of scriptures that will tell you what that
means. Now, both outside of my experience
personally and in my experience personally, Christ is my life.
I want to give you two scriptures that I believe will show what
that means. I look here in Colossians chapter three. Paul says in verse one, if you
didn't be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above
where Christ said it on the right hand of God, set your affection
on things above and not on things on the earth, for you are dead.
And your life is hid with Christ in God when Christ, who is our
life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory.
And notice the who is, is in italics. The translators put
it there to seemingly make it clear, but if anything, it doesn't
make it clear here. When Christ, our life. Now, my life, my personal life,
I'm not talking about somebody else's life. I'm not talking
about it as if it were my life. My life right now, my life before
God is a person seated at the right hand of the Father. That
is my life. And I'm not saying this mystically. That really is my life. He is
my life before God. My life right now is in the very
presence of God beholding His glory. That is my life, His life. Now, when I say that, that's
almost without my experience. My life right now seated at the
right hand of the Father. But look in Galatians chapter
two. Look at my experience of Him being my life. Paul says in verse twenty, I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live, yet not
I, but Christ liveth in me. And the life which I now live
in the flesh, I live by, does it say faith in the Son of God?
It says by the faith of the Son of God. Now, in my experience,
the life that I now live in the flesh, he says, I live by the
faith of the Son of God. You know, I can't even live off
my faith. I live off his faithfulness. I believe on him. And the life
that I now live in the flesh, what I'm talking to you right
now, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave
himself for me. Now, here's a scripture that
I think will be helpful in understanding this. Once again, turn to John
11. In him, in the Lord Jesus Christ,
was life. My life before God, that which
brings me into glory, that which makes me accepted, my life before
God is not found in me. My life before God is the Lord
Jesus himself. Now look here in John 11, beginning in verse 23, Jesus
saith unto her, talking to Martha, her brother had died, Lazarus.
letters in jesus faith and heard our brother shall rise again
mark the faith in him i know that he should rise again in
the resurrection of the last day in our own i don't know that
i don't know there at the end there's going to be a resurrection
and uh... i know that uh... he'll be raised
on that resurrection morning i remember that uh... i mean
you are you part of that are you know that first twenty-five
jesus faith and her i am the resurrection. And I am the life. Now, your
brother, it's true the resurrection is going to be on the last day.
But your brother is not given life when he's raised up on the
last day. He was raised when I'm raised.
And I am his life. I'm the resurrection. And I am
the life. I am all of those things. Now, in him was life. Was it
anywhere else? No. In him was life. Nowhere
else. In the ark, when God flooded
the earth and Noah's ark rose above the floodwaters, there
was safety where? In the ark. outside of the ark
was there any safety at all was there any mercy at all did anyone
escape was outside the ark absolutely not it's in the ark in him is
life in the ark is spiritual life before God if I'm in him
I have life now this is an interesting thing to think about I bet Noah
was 120 years in constructing that ark according to scripture.
I met some people who watched him and became interested in
it. Watching him build that ark.
Who's stupid enough to build a big ark like that on dry ground?
And they thought, why in the world is he doing this? It seems
idiotic. But I met some people who got
interested in it. It was so huge. There were people who could tell
you how long it was. What if death was? They could tell you
all kinds of things about the ark, and maybe some of these
people could tell you more things about the ark than the people
who were in the ark could tell you. Some of them. But you could
know everything accurate about the ark, but what good would
it do you if you weren't in the ark? It didn't do you any good
at all, did it? In him, in the Lord Jesus Christ,
was life. Well, how could I know if I'm
in him? But not everybody's in him. If everybody's in him, everybody'd
be saved. How can I know if I'm in him?
The scripture says faith is the evidence of things not seen.
Now, you can't see by looking at me whether I'm in Christ,
can you? How can I know if I'm in Christ? Faith. Resting in
Christ, that's resting in Christ is the evidence of things not
seen. Now, he says, in him was life, and look what it says next
in our text, the life, and this is the only life. He only has
life independently. He has no needs. In him was life,
and the life was the light of men. The life was the light. That's what I entitled this message,
the life. The life was the light of men. Now, what's life for? What is
light? You know, life is a hard thing
to define. It's hard to put a definition
on life because life is not even something that can be weighed.
You can't put it in scales and weigh it and get some kind of
determination of what makes it up. It's something that is so
glorious, light, sunlight, that it's like its beams can shine
on the dome and not contract any of its filth, yet it can
shine. And what a marvelous thing light
is. Now, Paul said in Ephesians chapter
5, verse 13, all things that are approved or made manifest
by the light for whatsoever does make manifest is light. That's
what light does. Light is how I see. There's light
in this room. Can you imagine if all of a sudden
there was thick darkness in this room? Oh, we'd get on. Make sure
we didn't bump into anybody. We'd be so scared. You know,
thick darkness. But when the light comes on,
you see. You see the people. You see the individuals. You
see where you are. Whatsoever makes manifest is
light. Now, the light is the light. by the light of the life we see."
Now, what all does that mean? The life was the light. The life,
the Lord Jesus Christ, is the light of who God really is. He said, in John chapter 14,
verse 9, Thomas said, show us the Father, and we'll be satisfied. said, show us the Father, and
we'll be satisfied. And he said, Have I been so long
with you, Philip, and yet hast thou not known me? He that hath
seen me, it's just as if he's seen the Father. Doesn't say that, does it? He that hath seen me hath seen All I'll ever know of God is
Jesus Christ the Lord. And if I've seen Him, I've seen
the Father. We read this in Isaiah 9, verse
6, Unto us a child is born, but unto us the Son is given. The
Son wasn't born. The Son's always been. He was
never created. Unto us a child is born, unto
us the Son is given, and the government shall be upon His
shoulders. And His name shall be called
Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father. That's the name of Jesus Christ. Don't ask me to explain it, but
I believe it. This is who He is. All the fullness
of who God is dwells in this person. All the fullness of sovereignty. God's in absolute control. It
dwells in His person. All the fullness of holiness.
All the fullness of justice. All the fullness of mighty power.
All the fullness of wisdom. Everything that God is dwells
in His person. So much so that He said, if you've
seen Me, you've seen God. Jesus is God. I don't suppose there's anything
I like saying better than that. Jesus Christ, the Lord is God
Almighty, and the light we have concerning who God is, is found
in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is, you know, let
me say this. Jesus Christ is either exactly
who he said he is, or he's the biggest imposter and phony to
ever live. Now, I want you to think about
that. There's no in-between. There's no in-between. It's not
like he was a good man who was just kind of deceived a little
bit. No, he's either who he said he is, or he's the biggest imposter
and phony to ever live. Now, I know who he is. He's who
he said he is. He's the light concerning God.
He's the light concerning man. He's the light concerning...
You know how you can tell what man really is? Sitting beside Jesus
Christ, the Lord. And you can see what man really
is. Now, you can set yourself beside me. You can come out okay,
can't you? I can set myself beside you.
I can come out all right. You know, when it comes right
down to it, there's not much difference between men anyway. You take the best
man and the worst man, how much difference is there between them? Man at his best state is what?
Altogether vanity. Talking about conviction of sin,
if you find out who Jesus Christ the Lord really is, you'll understand
real clearly that you're nothing but sin. And until you see who
He is, until I see who He is, that'll be meaningless to me.
I'll just think it's morose and negative and why you're talking
that way. But if I ever see who Jesus Christ really is in His
glory, in the glory of His mercy, I'll see what sin is. I'll assure
you. That's the only way you see what
sin really is. When I look, the life was the light. The life
is the light as to how God can accept me. Turn with me to John
chapter 8. This straightens this up for
me. John chapter 8. You know, I've read this passage
of scripture, I don't know how many times, and wondered why
he said this. John chapter 8. He is the light
first of who God is. He's the light concerning who
you and I are. And he is the light concerning how God can
have something to do in favor with mere you. Now we're talking
about how glorious he is. Now look at this verse 12 of
John chapter 8. Then Jesus spake again, saying
unto them, I am the light of the world. Now, why does he say
that? Is there a reason why this is
given this position in the scriptures? I am the light of the world. Why did he say it at this time?
We'll go back to verse 10 of John chapter 8. When Jesus had lifted up himself
and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are
those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She
said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither
do I condemn thee. Now, wait a minute. This woman
was caught in adultery in the very act. This was not alleged. This was proven. In verse 2,
And early in the morning he came again unto the temple, and all
the people came unto him, and sat down, and he taught them.
And the scribes and the Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken
in adultery. And when they had set her in
the midst, they said unto him, Master, this woman was taken
in adultery in the very act. Now, plenty of witnesses. Someone has to wonder where the
man was. Just the woman, what about the
fellow? He was to be stoned too, but they let him go. This woman
was caught and she's exposed. Now Moses, verse 5, And the law
commanded us that such should be stoned. But what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him
that they might have to accuse him. They thought we've got him
now. If he said let her go, we'll
say you don't respect God's holy law. We've got to, you don't
really respect the law because the law says to stoner. And if
he says go ahead and stoner, we can say, what about all this
mercy you talk about? What about all this grace? You
say you're the friend of publicans and sinners. And you say stoner?
They thought they had him. Isn't that amazing that such, and I'm not saying this about
them, I'm saying about me and you too, such ignorant people could think
they could fool omniscience. Verse 6, this they said, tempting
him that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down and
with his finger wrote on the ground as though he heard them
not. And when they continued asking
him, he lifted up himself and said unto them, He that is without
sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again
he stooped down and wrote on the ground. And when they which heard it
being convicted by their own conscience, they weren't convicted
by the Holy Spirit or they would have come to Christ. Here's what
happens when people are convicted by their own conscience. They
went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even into the
last. And Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in the
midst. Now, this woman was guilty, caught in the very act. How could
he say, I do not condemn you? Now, there's only one way Jesus
Christ, the Lord, can say you're not condemned. You know how that
is? It's if you're not guilty. That's the only way. Not guilty. I don't condemn you. Now, how
can that be? Christ is the light of how that
can be. Christ, Jesus, and then He went
on to say, I am the light of the world. Here's the light of
how God can look at me and say, when I am guilty in my person,
and say, you're not guilty. It's because I'm really not guilty.
Christ's perfect obedience, mine. My sin became His. His righteousness
becomes mine. Now, there's light as to how
God can look at me, how Christ can look at me and say, you're
not guilty. You're not guilty. You're justified.
I am the light of the world. And He's the light Of men in
this sense, everything that happens, while I don't understand it,
I know who's controlling it and who is the cause of it. Now,
he's the light of who God is, who man is, how God can save
sinners, and he's the light concerning everything else. You know, concerning
everything that happens, I don't care what it is, concerning everything
that happens, here's what he says, give his eye. Be not afraid. He said in Isaiah
45, 7, I form the light, I create darkness. I make peace, I create
evil. I, the Lord, do all these things. You know what I love about that
passage of Scripture? Just say it and leave it alone. I'm not going
to try to apologize to the Lord for this. If He said it, it's
the best way, isn't it? However He says something, that's just
the way it is. And that's why Eli, When our
Lord, or when our Lord sent Samuel to Eli and said, told Eli, God's
going to kill your two boys, you know what Eli said? It's
the Lord. Let him do what seemeth him good. If the Lord really does reign,
now you listen to me real carefully, I want everybody to get a hold
of this. If the Lord really is in control, is he? Is he? If the Lord really is in control,
what do you have to worry about? Is there anything to worry about
if He reigns? Absolutely nothing. He reigns. Now, He's the light in that sense.
Now, back to our text from John 1. Let me look at these other
verses. And the light, the Lord Jesus
Christ, His life, His life is the light. The light shineth
in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. When you turn the light on in
a dark room, does the darkness try to fight against it and just
kind of gradually disappear? Is that the way it works? No,
when the light's turned on, what happens to the darkness? It's
gone. It flees. Now when he talks about
the darkness not comprehending it, the word doesn't mean the
darkness didn't understand it, it means the darkness couldn't
overtake it. What this is talking about is invincible, irresistible
grace. The grace of God the Holy Spirit.
When he said, light be, darkness flees. Darkness cannot fight
light. When God who commanded the light
to shine out of the darkness has shined in our hearts to give
the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face
of Jesus Christ. The darkness can't stop this.
Then he says in verse six, there was a man sent from God
whose name was John. Now this verse almost seems unusual
to me. that we're talking about the
Lord Jesus Christ, and all of a sudden we talk about this man.
I mean, there's quite a distinction there. We're talking about him
who is the light, and all of a sudden there's a man sent from God whose
name was John. Man at his best state is altogether
vanity, but he was a man sent from God. And what this is a
reference to is the preaching of the gospel. There was a man,
and isn't that what a true preacher is? There was a man, a man sent
from God, whose name was John. And what was his purpose? Verse
7, the same came for a witness to bear witness of the light
that all men through him might believe. Now this man came to
bear witness to the light. A man sent from God who has something
to say because he has seen something. He's bearing witness. He's giving
testimony. He's not just barreling out things
that somebody else told him that he doesn't really have any experience
of and doesn't really know. He's just learned it here and he's
spitting it back out again. That's not at all the case concerning
a true preacher. He's coming to bear witness, to give personal
testimony to. Now, if I'm preaching the gospel,
if I'm truly preaching the gospel, I'm telling you that which I've
seen. Not simply that which somebody
else has told me, but I'm bearing witness to this. I'm giving testimony
to this. And the word actually carries
with it the idea of something willing to die for. It's where
we get the word martyr from. If a man is a true preacher of
the gospel, he is willing to die for that which he's preaching. He really is. If you believe
the gospel, this is a gospel worthy of your death, isn't it?
It's certainly a gospel worthy of your life, but it's a gospel. Every believer here, by his grace,
and you know it's only as he enables you to, I realize that,
but every believer here, you're willing to die for the gospel.
This is a message we're dying for, isn't it? Now, in bearing
testimony, that's how we preach. We're bearing witness. When I
talk about Christ being the light of the Father, I'm talking about
something I've seen. You say, well, I don't believe
it. Well, I do. I do. The job of the witness is not
to talk somebody else into believing. It's just to tell the truth.
You know, I'm amazed when witnesses in courts, they train them how
to Be a witness? That's kind of like training
somebody how to be a Christian witness. You don't train somebody to be
a witness. When you witness, you're just talking about what
you've seen, what you've experienced, what I've been. I've seen that.
And I'm bearing witness to the fact, if I'm a true preacher,
I'm bearing witness to the fact that Jesus Christ is God. I know
that. I'm bearing witness to the fact
that man, and I'm talking about me, I'm talking about you, I'm
bearing testimony to the fact that man is nothing but sin. That's it. Nothing else. And
when I say that, I'm speaking that in testimony. I'm not just
talking about something I read and say, therefore, no, I really
believe this. And I'm bearing witness to the fact that the
only way to the Father is Christ. He said, no man comes to the
Father but by me. The only way that you and I can
be brought into the presence of God and accepted is through
the Lord Jesus Christ. We bear witness to this. There's
a man sent from God. He came to bear witness to what?
The light. The light. Look what it says
next. Verse 8. He was not that light. Let's don't put too much emphasis
on the preacher. He was not that light. Look in verse 19. Now, John,
remember this about John, he had a pretty impressive resume.
He was the forerunner of Christ. He was foretold of in the book
of Isaiah, in the book of Malachi, the one who was coming to prepare
the way of the Lord by the last words of the Old Testament are
talking about him. He's the one of whom the Lord
Jesus Christ said, among them that are born of women. None
is greater than John the Baptist. Now, John had a pretty impressive
testimony or resume, didn't he? Now, look what he said, verse
19, and this is the record of John when the Jews sent priests
and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, who art thou? And he
confessed and denied not, but confessed, I'm not the Christ.
And they asked him, what are you then? Are you Elijah? And
he said, no. Are you that prophet? Now, I
would have had a temptation to say, well, let me tell you who
I am. All John said was, no. I'm the
voice of that one crying from the wilderness. Just a voice. He came to bear witness of the
light that all men through him might believe." Now, this is
God's purpose in bearing testimony. When I'm preaching the gospel,
I want you to believe. I want you to believe on Christ.
I want you to actually trust Him. I want you to actually rest
in who He is and what He did. That's our purpose in preaching,
that all men might believe. We're not trying to keep people
out. We're trying to bring people
in. I want people to believe the Gospel. Look in John chapter
20 for a moment. I love this verse of Scripture. John chapter
20. Verse 30 and many other signs
truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not
written in this book, but these are written. That you might believe. That Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God, and that believing you might have life through his
name, that that's why God wrote this book. I. I don't have any trouble with
this. I have trouble explaining it. But I don't have any trouble
preaching this. Now you listen to me real carefully.
Jesus Christ, when he died on Calvary's cross, he died for
the elect. And he accomplished their salvation. He didn't make salvation possible
for all men. He actually saved everybody he
died for. And I say that with fullness
of conviction. I know that. So anything else
is a lie. That's the truth. He said, I
laid down my life for the sheep. I know that only the elect will
be saved. I know that. Scripture teaches
it. There's no question about that. That's not even up for
debate. I know that. And I can say with just as much
conviction, everybody in this room, you are commanded to believe
the gospel. And that's not contradictory.
You say, that's contradiction. Well, I'm not trying to remain
consistent with myself. It may. I don't. It's what the
Bible says. God commands all men everywhere
to repent. And everybody in this room, when
I preach to you, this is what I believe. Believe the gospel
and your right to believe the gospel, your life, your right
to rely on Christ because God commands you to. Don't worry
as to whether or not you're one of the elect. Don't worry as
to whether or not Christ died for you. What God commands you
to do is to trust His Son right now. Don't wait for an experience.
Don't wait till you feel something. Don't wait till you learn more.
Don't wait. Don't hesitate on this thing.
God's command to you right now, I don't care who you are, God's
command to you is to trust His dear Son. And to not do so is
disobedience. And everybody in here, deep down,
You know what I'm saying is the truth. You know what I'm saying
is the truth. I don't believe it. Well, I think
deep down you do. I know deep down you do. It's
the truth. It's the truth. It's God's truth. And one of
the things I love about the truth is if you tell the truth, you
don't have to defend it really. You just lay it out there and
Lord bless it. I think as soon as someone hears
who God really is, God absolutely sovereign and controlled, they
know, well, it's got to be, that's who God is. Anything less is
no God. Now, he came to bear witness
of the truth that all men through him might believe. He was not
that light. He was just a man, but he was sent to bear witness
of that light that was the true light. which lighteth every man
that cometh into the world." Now, we'll close thinking about
this ninth verse. He was that true light which
lights every man that comes into the world. He's that true light
as opposed to false lights. Turn with me for a moment to
2 Corinthians chapter 11. 2 Corinthians chapter 11. I'm sorry, I'm in 1 Corinthians,
that's why I'm messing up. 2 Corinthians, chapter 11, verse
13. For such are false apostles,
deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles
of Christ. And no marvel, for Satan himself
is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it's no
great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers
of righteousness, whose ends shall be according to their works."
Now, Satan comes as an angel of light and as a minister of
righteousness. John comes to bear witness to
the true light as opposed to the false light. Now, how can
I know if what I'm seeing and hearing is a false light? How
can I know that? I know this. True life will leave
you looking nowhere but Christ. You'll be shut up to Christ.
You won't have any other hope but Christ. And you'll be left
resting in the Lord Jesus Christ. A false light is going to lead
you somewhere else. Not resting in Christ, but thinking
there's got to be more. There's something else I need
to do. There's something else I need to be. A true light will leave
you resting in the Lord Jesus Christ. Really believing that
he is all in salvation. Now, he's that light. And notice
it says he lights every man that comes into the world. What's that mean? Exactly what
it says. He's the light that lights every
man that comes into the world. And what that means is you and
I have sufficient light to hold us responsible and accountable.
There's no excuse to not believe. He's the light that lights every
man that comes into the world. Everybody becomes like when I'm
what about the people that haven't heard? Well, you don't need to
worry about the people that haven't heard right now. Let's talk about
me and you. Let's just forget about the people out here. Everybody
that we know of right now is in this room. You have sufficient
light to render you right now inexcusable. Without excuse. And deep down, everybody knows
this is so. I love that statement, there
are no atheists in foxholes. And they're not. They're not. Deep down, everybody knows this
is so. He's the light that lights all men that come into the world.
And the fact that this light lights all men tells us that
we have sufficient light to be without excuse. So here's, well,
what do I do then? What do I do if I don't have
any excuse? Where am I going to go? What am I going to do? I
love it when they say to Paul and Silas, that Philippian jailer
says, sir, what must I do to be saved? I want to know. What
must I do? Did Paul say, well, you can't
do anything? He didn't say that, did he? He said, Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Rely, let go of everything else. Right
now, this is God's command to you. This is God's command to
me. Let go of everything else and trust who He is and what
He did as everything in salvation. May God give us grace to do so.
Let's pray.
