Romans 1, verse 14, Paul said, I am debtor. I am debtor. I'm in debt. Like Shane wrote about that,
he said, when I stand before God's throne dressed in beauty,
not my own, When I see thee as thou art and love thee with an
unsinning heart, then, Lord, shall I really know and fully
know, and not till then, how much I owe. I'm a debtor to the
Father who chose me, loved me from the foundation of the world.
I'm a debtor to the Lord Jesus, who left the Father's glory and
came into this world, suffered and died, bearing my sins in
his body on the tree. I am a debtor to the Spirit of
God, who sought me out, awakened me, quickened me from the dead,
called me, gave me ears to hear the gospel and a heart to love
the Savior. I am a debtor to the prophets,
men who suffered and died to write this Old Testament Scripture. I'm a debtor to the apostles.
I'm a debtor to all of God's faithful servants who through
the years have paid the price, suffered, many died to preach
the gospel of God's grace. I'm a debtor to the man who 47
years ago dared to be different. and tell us the truth about the
grace of God. I'm a debtor to all people in
that God has taught me the gospel. God has revealed to me how he
can be just and justify sinners. And I'm a debtor to tell everybody
about that Savior. I must preach the truth. I must
tell the truth. I must present the truth that
freed me. not compromising. Woe is unto me if I preach not
the gospel. But necessity is laid upon me.
I must preach the gospel. I have no alternative because
I'm a debtor. And an honest man pays his debts.
So Paul said, I'm a debtor, verse 14, both to the Greeks and to
the barbarians. It doesn't matter whether they're
wise or unwise. whether they're bond or free,
male or female, black or white, old or young, rich or poor, I'm
a debtor. So, verse 15, as much as in me
is, I'm ready, whatever the cost may be, whatever the struggle,
whatever the opposition, I'm ready to preach the gospel to
you that are at Rome also. headquarters of a pagan empire.
Rome, seat of Satan. Rome, where persecution is the
greatest. Rome, where fetters and bonds
awaited him. Rome, city of idolatry. I'm ready
to preach the gospel in Rome also. It's easy to preach the
gospel of grace in a Bible conference. It's another matter to preach
it when you stand alone, and men oppose it, and fight it,
and hate it, and hate you because you preached it. It's easy to
preach the gospel among those who believe it. It's another
matter to preach it where they don't believe it, and preach
it clearly so they understand what you're saying. There's no
doubt about what you're saying. Because he says, I'll tell you
why. I'm a debtor. I'll tell you why. I'm ready
to preach the gospel in Rome too. Same gospel. Verse 16, because
I'm not ashamed of it. I'm not ashamed of the gospel.
I'm ashamed of what I used to believe. I'm ashamed of the day
when I tried to present to God my filthy rags of self-righteousness
and expect him to receive it. I'm ashamed of that. I'm ashamed
of what I was and what I preached back yonder. But I'm not ashamed
of the gospel. I'm not ashamed. I know it's
offensive to natural men. Spurgeon brought a message one
time on the offense of the cross, the offense of the cross, in
which he had four points. He said, calling this generation
depraved sinners offends their dignity. They don't appreciate
that title. Maurice Montgomery said he heard
a woman sing that song where it says, he, amazing grace, where
he saved a wretch like me. He said she changed that word
to a sinner like me. He said it's not too offensive
to be called a sinner, but it's pretty bad to be called a wretch.
But he said, you know, a sinner and a wretch is the same thing. But calling men depraved sinners
offends their dignity. And shutting men up to divine
revelation, that's distasteful. That offends a man's wisdom.
You mean to tell me, are you saying that I can read this Bible
and not understand it? That's exactly what we're saying.
That's exactly in plain, everyday language what we're saying. The
natural man receiveth not the things of God. He cannot understand
them. They are spiritually discerned.
And that offends their wisdom. And preaching justification by
grace through faith alone, through the blood of Christ, offends
man's pride. He wants a part in his salvation,
any part, a little part, a small part, but some part. It can't
be. It just can't be. all of grace. But it is. And
that offends their pride. And giving the Lord Jesus all
the glory offends the love of self. Giving him all the glory. We're
just envious creatures. We're proud creatures. We're
covetous creatures. We're ego, egotistic creatures. We want a little glory. But our
Lord said, let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, the rich
man in his riches, the strong man in his strength. But if any
man glory, let him glory in one thing, he knows me in Christ. And I'm not ashamed of the gospel.
I know it's offensive. It's offensive to the natural
man. It's foolishness to the wise people. The Pharisees said
to that believer, that simple believer, they said, have any
of us believed on him? Now think about it, they said.
Do you know any important people that have believed on your Savior?
Have any of the Pharisees believed on him? Have any of the Sadducees
believed on him? Have any of the scribes or lawyers
believed on him? No! And today, do you know any kings
that believe on Christ? Do you know any presidents? Legislators? Important people? How many doctors do you know
who loved the Savior? Lawyers? Professors in your schools? Have any of them believed on
your Savior? I won't say not any, I'll say
not many. Not many mighty, thank God, Queen
Victoria said for the letter him. He didn't say not any, he
said not many. I received a letter yesterday
from a lawyer in Charleston, West Virginia, unto his mom. She died several
years ago, but she faithfully listened to me every Sunday on
television, and he faithfully listened. attorney, William Mitchell. And when I went off Channel 13,
he wrote the station, sent me a copy of the letter, and he
said, I won't listen to your station ever again. You took
my preacher off there. This man's an attorney at Charleston. Sunday I preached from Philippians
1, 6 on he'll finish the work. He, I'm confident of this, that
he which hath begun a good work in you will finish it. in the
day of Jesus Christ, and here is his letter, brief but powerful. I just heard your sermon broadcast
today regarding he will finish his work. Your use of the scriptures
in such a logical, persuasive presentation has the effect of
enhancing my hope. I do hope many other viewers
were uplifted as I was. I'd like to receive a copy of
that message so I can share it with my friends. Not many, but
some. It's foolishness to most of the
wise, but it's the power of God to a really wise wise man. to the natural man, it's offensive,
to the wise, it's foolishness, and to the religious, it's a
stumbling block. The greatest, listen to me, I'm
telling you the truth, the greatest enemies of the cross, of God's
sovereign free grace, of the gospel, the greatest enemies
of the gospel of imputed righteousness, The greatest enemies of his effectual,
God-honoring atonement are religious people. Your neighbors and friends
always have been and are now the greatest enemies of the gospel
of God's grace. That's sad, but that's true.
If a man preaches the gospel of God uncompromising, I'm talking
about depravity Irresistible grace, covenant theology, particular
redemption, the effectual call of God's Spirit, the perseverance
of the saints, substitution, satisfaction, redemption by grace
as a gift of God, who cannot fail, and a victorious Savior. His greatest opposition will
come from the preachers in his town and the religious people
in the churches. They'll hate him, though they've
never met him. But I'm not, I'm neither ashamed
or reluctant to preach the gospel simply and plainly. And Paul
tells us why. That he's not ashamed of the
gospel. Look at the next few lines. I'm not ashamed of the
gospel of Christ. I'll tell you why I'm not ashamed
of the gospel. It's the gospel of Christ. There's no other gospel. If you
preach any other gospel, Paul said, let him be accursed. Every
foundation can no man lay than that which is laid. Christ the
Lord is none other name under heaven, given among men, whereby
we must be saved. Christ said, I'm the way, I'm
the truth, I'm the light. No man comes to the Father but
by me. It's the gospel of Christ. It's the holy gospel. And I'm
not ashamed of the gospel, here's the second reason he gives this,
verse 16, I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it
is the power of God unto salvation. This gospel is literally the
power of God unto salvation. Now listen carefully to me, listen
carefully. Only Christ, in his perfect obedience
as a man, made of a woman, made under the law, Only Christ in
his perfect obedience, every jot and tittle of that
which is written, only Christ in his suffering and death and
the shedding of his blood, only Christ can enable God to be God
and save you, to be just and justify my soul. Only Christ. There's no other way. Do we understand
that? God Almighty cannot be merciful
at the expense of his law. I tell you, when I saw this,
when I learned this in 1950, it was like God opened a curtain. I can, I can overlook another
man's sin because I'm a sinner, but God can't. God came. Almighty God cannot be merciful
at the expense of his law. It has to be honored. At the
expense of his justice, it has to be satisfied. I'll tell you this, Peter could
deny his Lord, but his Lord couldn't deny him. See what I'm saying? Peter could
deny his Lord and still be Peter, still be saved, not change his
character a bit. He denied him a lot of times.
He's still Peter. But God can't lie. And God cannot deny you. And
God cannot save a sinner apart from his justice and honor being
upheld. That's why Christ died. That's
the reason I'm not ashamed of this gospel of grace. It enables
God to be God. Let God be God! It enables him
to be just and justifier, righteous and merciful, holy and loved. He can be both, because my debt
is paid in full by Christ. Yours is too. I wish that the world of preachers
could get a hold of who God is. Christ Jesus died for our sins,
but he died for God's holiness. The blood in the tabernacle on
the mercy seat was not toward the people, it was toward God.
And that death of his Son on the cross was not nearly so much
toward us, it was for us, but it was toward him. See what I'm saying? And Christ reconciled us to God. He removed the inanimity. He removed the wrath. He removed
the cause for damnation. God won't damn me now because
the cause is gone. I'm not ashamed of this gospel.
It's the gospel of Christ, it's the power of God unto salvation,
and then verse 17, I'm not ashamed of this gospel, for therein,
in that gospel, and only in that gospel, is the righteousness
of God revealed. Only in Christ. Turn over one
page to Romans 3. Romans 3, verse 19. Now, we know that What
thing soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the
law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world become
guilty, subject to the judgment of God. Therefore by the deeds
of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight. We
justify ourselves, but not his sight. For by the law is the
knowledge of sin, but now the holiness of God. The righteousness
of God, without the law, without my obedience to it, not without
obedience because Christ obeyed it, but without my obedience,
is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.
It's even the very holiness and righteousness of God, which is
by the faithfulness of Christ. God's holy, immaculately, infinitely,
unchangeably holy. We are sinners. unchangeably
by any efforts of our own centers. And God demands a righteousness.
How good does a man have to be to go to heaven? As good as God.
As holy as God. And we don't have that. Except
your righteousness succeed that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you shall in no wise enter the kingdom of heaven. That's the
reason Christ came down here to impute unto us, impart unto
us, and give us That righteousness of God, and that's the reason
I'm not ashamed of the gospel, because this gospel is the only
place where that righteousness is revealed. You won't find it
anywhere else. Don't look for it anywhere else.
Then his son. I finished the work, he said,
you gave me to do. That work was to redeem a people.
Covenant. Mediator of that covenant, the
surety of that covenant, his blood is the blood of that everlasting
covenant that he might bring us to God. And my dear friends,
he has done it and he will do it. And that righteousness of
God is revealed from faith to faith, from one degree of faith
to another. Our faith groweth. There's weak faith and great
faith. There's little faith and much
faith. It's not the strength of your faith, it's the strength
of the object of your faith that's safe. And God reveals that gospel
from one degree of faith to the other. As we grow in grace and
in the knowledge of Christ, we grow in an understanding of and
appreciation for and confidence in our Redeemer and His righteousness. As it's written four times in
this Bible, the just shall live by faith. All right, verse 18. Here's the title of this message.
Two revelations from heaven. Verse 18. For the wrath of God
is revealed from heaven. There are two clear revelations
from heaven. I have two clear, unquestionable revelations from
heaven. One we just read about. The love
and grace of God in Christ Jesus revealed. That's what's said
over here in Romans chapter 3. We read the righteousness of
God is revealed in Christ. The glory of God is revealed
in Christ. The love of God is revealed in
Christ. When I was down in Madisonville
last week, I gave them an outline on John 3, 14 through 16. You
know, for years, for years they've worn this out. John 3, 16 is
the gospel in a nutshell. It said Moses, take a serpent
in the likeness of the one that's bitten the people and lift it
on a pole between heaven and earth. And whosoever shall lift
will live. And that's the gospel. Our Lord
said himself, as Moses lifted up that serpent, Christ was made
in the likeness of our problem, sinful flesh. And as a man bearing
our sins, he was lifted up between heaven and earth. And John 3.15
is the results. The remedy, even so must the
Son of Man be crucified, lifted up. John 3.15, here's the results,
that whosoever looketh, believeth, will live. John 3.16 is the reason
for all that. For God so loved. See, that's
why Christ came. That's why Christ died. That's
why we're saved. For God so loved the world that
He gave His Son, that whosoever looketh. And that's the response. We believe on Him. But we've
got into these clichés to the point where some folks don't
even preach the gospel. They've got to have a cross,
a substitute, a sacrifice. Without the shedding of blood,
there's no remission, there's no gospel. And that's a clear
revelation. But there's another revelation.
Verse 18 says, The wrath of God is revealed from heaven. The wrath of God is revealed
from heaven. And the wrath of God is revealed
from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. You know, this is something for
our generation. It's something that's hard for them to bear. That God is angry with the wicked. That Almighty God hateth the
workers of iniquity. That the only way that a holy
God can love you and me is in Christ, out of Christ. God's a consuming fire. Out of
Christ, God's angry. Now that's been shown in the
fall of Adam, when God banished him from the garden. That's shown in the flood, when
God destroyed a whole world of people. God's angry. The wrath of God is revealed
from heaven against all ungodliness and all unrighteousness of men.
It's shown in Sodom and Gomorrah when God rained fire from heaven
and destroyed those two cities. It's shown when Christ is hanging
on the cross. God spared not his own son. God
is angry. And Christ Jesus died under the
judgment and wrath of God for our sins. God was angry enough
to turn his back. Isn't that true? and forsake
his son because he bore sin. And Psalm chapter 5 verse 5 says
this, Psalm 5 verse 4, listen, Thou art not a God who has pleasure
in wickedness, neither shall evil dwell with
thee, but that's what we're telling this, what preachers are telling
this, well, God loves you. The foolish shall not stand in
his sight. Thou hatest all workers of iniquity. When our Lord condemned those
religious people in Matthew 7 at the judgment, he said, Depart
from me. Depart from me, you workers of
iniquity. Thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Look at Psalm 7. Psalm 7, verse 11. Psalm 7. It's so difficult. It seems like
the average preacher just can't bring himself to say, God's angry. The wrath of God. He that believeth
not on the Son, the wrath of God abideth on him. Psalm 7,
verse 11, God judgeth the righteous, or God is a righteous judge.
That's what that's saying. God is a righteous judge. And
God's angry with the wicked every day. And if he turn not, he'll
whet his sword, he has bent his bow and made it ready, he has
also prepared for him the instruments of death, and he ordained his
arrows against the persecutors. That does not sound like a thesis
on love is judgment and wrath. And listen, verse 18 in our text,
look at it again. Paul said, for the wrath of God
is revealed from heaven against all unrighteousness and ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men, listen, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. God is especially angry, and
his wrath is specially directed toward those who sin against
the light of revelation, who hold the truth, who have
some knowledge of the truth, but they tamper with it and hold
it in an unrighteous way. Look at verse 19 and see, that's
not what these next verses say. Because that which may be known
of God is manifested to them. There are things, now listen,
there are things which a natural man cannot know of God. There
are things about God, his mercy and grace in Christ, his gospel,
which have to be revealed by the Holy Spirit. which a natural
man does not understand because they are spiritually discerned.
But much about God can be known and is known. Much about God
is clearly revealed. He says here, listen, listen
to it. Because that which may be known
of God is manifested to them, for God has shown it to them.
These people who hold the truth in unrighteousness, God has shown
them some things about himself. For example, verse 20, for the
invisible things from the creation of the world are clearly seen.
The heavens declare the glory of God. The fulminant showeth
his handiwork. The things that are made declare
the power of God, the wisdom of God, the greatness of God.
Verse 20, the invisible things of God from the creation of the
world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that
are made, even His eternal Godhead, His eternal power. So they're
without excuse. Every man is without excuse because
there are many things of God which can be known and are known. Conscience. Turn to Romans 2.
Romans 2. Listen to verse 14, Romans 2. when the Gentiles, these are
the cannibals and pagans and headhunters and all the rest
of them, when the Gentiles, which have not the law, they don't
have Moses' law, they didn't have a tabernacle or a priesthood,
but when they do by nature, the things contained in the law,
these having not a law are law unto themselves, which shows
the work of the law written in their hearts. It's called conscience. Their conscience bearing witness,
and their thoughts the meanwhile, accusing or else excusing one
another. Because that which may be known
of God, He showed it to them. By the things that are made,
by the creation of the world, by the stars and the moon and
the sun, and all the magnificence of His creation, God, many things
about God can be known. And then watch this. What about
scriptures? The whole world has the scriptures.
This Bible has been translated into over a thousand languages
and dialects. Men have Bibles. Turn to John
12 and listen to what our Lord says about that. John 12. John 12, verse 46. Now listen
carefully to this. John 12, verse 46. John 12.46, I am come, a light
into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide
in darkness. And if any man hear my words
and believe not, and there are millions who hear his words and
believe not, I judge him not. I came not to judge the world,
but to save the world. He that rejecteth me and receiveth
not my words hath one that judgeth him the word that I have spoken. The same shall judge him in the
last day. The Gideons have put Bibles in
every hospital room, every motel room, every jail cell in this
world. Men have Bibles. And my Lord said, that's sufficient. If they wanted to know God, they
could know God. And what that verse is saying
in my text, in verse 20, Verse 19, because that which
may be known of God is manifested to them, that's that word, to
them, for God has showed it to them. For the invisible things of him
from the creation of this world are clearly seen, being understood
by the things that are made, even his eternal power in Godhead,
so they are without excuse. Conscience, law, the word, and
his servants. How many men has God sent to
this world to preach in every nation? You don't turn to this.
I can turn to it quickly over in 2 Chronicles verse 36. But listen to this. 2 Chronicles
36 verse 16. Listen to what God says here. They mocked the messengers of
God. They despised his words. They misused his prophets until
the wrath of the Lord arose against them and there is no remedy. They make fun of God's preachers
and they mock his word until the wrath of God rises up in
his nostrils and there's no remedy. Oh, when God wets his sword,
he's going to take care of this generation, the wrath of God. Look at verse 21. Because when
they knew God, they know these things. There are things about
God that men can know. When they knew God, when they
acknowledged there is a God, that things didn't just happen.
Well, I believe there's a God. Sure you do. Only a fool says
in his heart, no God. I believe somebody made all these
things and sustained all these things. Sure, if you've got an
Elsa brain, you know there's a God. But here's the problem. They
wouldn't let him be God. When they knew God, when they
saw these things, They glorified him not as God. What's that saying? They refused to exalt him, and
honor him, and worship him, and bow to him, and magnify him,
and praise him, and believe him, and love him, and worship him.
They refused. We will not have this man reign
over us. Today's people say, well, he
can be sovereign in creation, he can be sovereign in supplying
the fish of the sea and the fowl there and the crops, but he ain't
going to be sovereign in salvation. He's not going to be God. He's not going to be God. When they knew these things,
These are people of sin against the life. That's the reason he
said the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and all unrighteousness in men, but especially those who hold
truth in unrighteousness. When they knew God, they wouldn't
let him be God. We aren't dependent on him, he's
dependent on us. What will you do with Jesus?
Not anything. But the serious question is,
what will He do with me? He's God. He's not lost. I am. He's not hungry. I am. He said,
if I was hungry, I wouldn't ask you. But I'm asking Him. He's
not naked. I am. He's not dead. I am. He's not going to hell. I am without Him. That's where you start, you let
God be God, and ever man alive. And watch this downhill, when
they knew these things and wouldn't bow, watch what happens. I'll
be brief. Because, verse 21, when they
knew God, they glorified him not as God, they weren't thankful.
They weren't thankful. But they became vain in their
imaginations. They turned from revelation to
imagination. They became vain and godless
in their thinking. They began, instead of reading
and believing, they began to imagine and thinking, rejecting
his word. They turned to their imagination,
and then their foolish heart was darkened. If all the light you've got is
darkness, how great is that darkness? And professing themselves, listen
to this downward road, professing themselves to be wise. Oh, we're
so wise, we're so smart. This generation's got computers
and lasers and faster than sound, planes, and we're smart. professing
themselves to be wise in the things of the world, they became
fools in things that really matter. That's the description of my
day. Wise in the world and foolish in things that really matter.
Isn't that right? And they changed the glory of
the incorruptible, incorruptible, immortal God into an image idols
and images made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts,
creeping things, changed the glory of the invisible
God that dwells in a light which no man can approach. They changed
His incorruptible God into statues of men, pictures of men, snakes
and beasts and birds and all kinds of things. We've got a whole lot of that
overlapping in this day. We've got pictures of what we
call Jesus. Would you draw me a picture of
him who dwells in the invisible? Would you draw me a picture of
him that's seated at the right hand of the majesty on high?
When he comes, we shall see him not as he was, a babe in a manger,
a man on a cross, but as he is. So we've drawn us a man and called
him Jesus. God's glory, which is revealed
in the face of Christ Jesus, is not God's glory that's revealed
in the face of Solomon's picture of Christ. No, sir. And we've got pictures of doves,
white doves, with leaves in their mouth. See, these
are symbols. Easter comes along and we've
got chickens and bunny rabbits and ducks. That's right. And people drive down the highway
with bumper stickers with fish on them. Fish. And I know what
that means. They used to draw it in the sand.
I know Jesus Christ, Son of God. But my God's not a fish. He's
not a dove. He's a victorious, all-conquering,
risen reigning Lord. And the glory of God is in his
face, and I don't need any symbols, or signs, or visual aids, or
puppets to behold him by faith. That's right. Watch out. Somebody said to me one time,
well, people know that God's in heaven. People know that those
pictures aren't God. People know those things, but
wait a minute. Keep presenting them to your children. Keep presenting
them. And with the passing of time,
because of the evil of the human heart, the image soon becomes
more important than the person. Take, for example, how the crosses
dominate religion in this day. Crosses, crosses, crosses, crosses
are everywhere. And that's nothing but an idol. That's right. Where do these things lead? And listen to this. Wherefore,
verse 24, God gave them up. There comes a time when through
the hardness of human hearts and the blindness, willful blindness,
willful blindness, God gave them up to uncleanness through the
lust of their own hearts to dishonor their bodies between themselves,
degrading. who changed the truth of God
into a lie. The truth of God is Christ, is
the truth. Worshipped and served the creature
more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. And for this
cause God gave him up. You see, he just keeps saying,
God gave him up. That's what's horrible. You read
over in Hosea 4 where it says, Ephraim's joined to his idols,
leave him alone. Just leave him alone. Just leave
this generation alone. They won't hear the gospel. They
won't walk in the light God gives them. They won't let God be God. So just God gave them up. In
verse 26, God gave them up to vile affections. Even their women
did change the natural use into that which is against nature.
That's lesbianism. Likewise, also the men, leaving
the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward
another. Men with men, working that which is Unnatural, that
word unseemly is shameful. Wretched, shameful. That's homosexuality. And why is this? God gave them
up. God gave them, they would not worship God. They would not
walk in His will and His way. He just let them go. Let them
go. He from His turn to His idols,
let Him go. and listen, and receiving in
themselves, in their bodies, that consequence, the word recompense
is penalty, consequence of their error which is justified. That's AIDS. That's what that
is. That's the recompense. That's
the consequence. That's the penalty for the direction
this world's going. You can laugh at me if you want
to, but God is God. And this generation is going
to move in just like Sodom. You know in San Francisco it's
just unbelievably rampant. It's so sad. Every charge in departing from
God has led to reprobation. That's what this is, reprobation.
You read the next verses, being filled with all unrighteousness,
wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, debate,
deceit, malignity, whispers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,
proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
without natural affection, without understanding, covenant breakers,
without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful. That's the trend, isn't it? Who knowings
the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are
worthy of death. They not only do these things,
but that's what sells newspapers. They have pleasure in them that
do it. That's what sells these things down in the Kroger's and
all these scandal sheets. People love to read that stuff. And our paper is here in this
little old town of Ashland. You've got to wade through all
this corruption to get to any kind of news. The daily paper has become off-limits
for children. Isn't that right? Am I not telling
the truth? Because it's filled with that
stuff there, and people like it. They like it. That's sad. And I hate to end up on a note
like that. Romans 160, I'm not ashamed of the gospel. It's the
power of God unto salvation to everyone that believe it, to
the Jew first and also to us pagans, Gentiles. For therein
is the righteousness of God revealed. I'm so glad that God didn't leave
us out there, but he brought us in here under his wings, under
the shadow of his wings. Thank God.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
