members in one body, and all
the members have not the same office. Paul is talking here
about the human body. The human body has many members,
eyes, ears, arms, legs, unseen members, and all the members
of the human body are not the same, nor do they all have the
same function. But all the members are necessary,
every part of the body. And one is not without the other
in the human body. Now verse 5, so we, the body
of Christ, the elect, God's people. So we being many, and how many? As the stars of the sky and the
sands of the sea show an innumerable number. A number no man can number. We being many are one body in
Christ, and every one member is one of another. So the Lord's
church is one body. All are not identical. All the
members are not identical. All do not have the same office
or the same service, but all have the same goal, His glory. to do his will, to glorify him,
remembers one of another. Now the Church, the body of Christ,
is considered in two ways. Let's turn to Colossians chapter
1. There is the universal Church, which is made up of redeemed
people, some already in heaven many here on the earth, from
the first person redeemed to the last one whom God will save.
That's his body, his church. It says here in Colossians 1
verse 16, For by him were all things created that are in heaven,
that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones
or dominions or principalities or powers, all things were created
by him. by Christ and for him. And he
is before all things, and by him all things are held together. And he's the head of the body,
not the bodies, the body, the church, who is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have
the preeminence. Now that scripture is talking
about his church. All are redeemed. There's not
a lost person in this church. This is his body. This is his
church. And then in Ephesians, turn back
to Ephesians chapter 5. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 23. Ephesians 5, 23. For the husband is the head of
the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church. The husband
has one wife. The Lord has one church. He's the head of the church.
He's the savior of the body. Therefore, as the church is subject
unto Christ, so let wives be to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church. His
body, his church, his elect, his jewels, his people, gave
himself for it. so that he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might
present it to himself, a glorious church, not having one spot,
not one hypocrite, not one lost person, not one, not one spot,
or one wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and
without blemish. All right? Hebrews chapter 12. This is talking about that church. Hebrews chapter 12, verse 22. But you come unto Mount Zion. Hebrews 12, 22. You come unto
Mount Zion, unto the city of the living God, the heaven of
Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the General
Assembly, Church of the Firstborn, which are written in heaven,
the Church of the Firstborn, which is written not on a roll
book down here, written in heaven, the Lamb's Book of Life, which are written in heaven,
and to God, to the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men,
made perfect. Now, Ephesians 4. Ephesians chapter
4, verse 4, is one body and one spirit, even
as we're called, you're called, we're called in one hope of your
calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
of all. So this scripture over here in
Romans 12 speaks primarily, and first of all, of that great body
of his elect. Christ is the head and every
believer is of the body. But what is said of that church
is said of each church, each local church, called out assembly
of God's people, where they're brought together and called out
by the Holy Spirit. And God has given them ministers,
and elders, and pastors. God has given them the ordinances
to observe, and the gospel to preach, and a fellowship. So
what is said of that great body is said of each church. And what
we're talking about tonight, we're talking about this church
of believers. So, verse 5, so we being many
are one body in Christ, and everyone members one of another, we're
members one of another. And until we can begin to think
like this, this is God's family, this is Christ's church, this
is his body. Until we begin to think like
this, we have no understanding of these words. Back at verse
3, just look at verse 3 for a moment. I say unto you through the grace
given unto me, to every man that's among you, Not to think of himself
more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly according
as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith. Don't think
of myself. Think of the body. I'm a member
of the body. It's like this body here. When I think of myself, I'm thinking
of my hand and my left hand and my foot and and my fingers, and
my throat, and my ears. So if I'm a member of the body
of Christ, I'm not going to think of this individual, I'm going
to think of this body. You follow what I'm saying? I
want to learn to think this way about this body. And it's not
what's best for me. It's what's best for the body. It's not just what's best for
one part of my body. It's what's best for the whole
body. And that's what I'm saying. We've got to learn to think this
way of not what's best for this individual here, this person,
but what's best for this body. It's not my will, but it's the
will of God for the body. It's not what I do and say is
no one's business. You know, folks say, well, what
I do and what I think and what I say and where I live and where
I go is nobody's business. It's my business where this hand
goes, where this foot goes. So if I'm a member of this body,
then it is important where I go and what I do and what I say.
Is it good for the body? My son Paul has an article in
the Bulletin today. I hope all of you read it. He asks three questions examining
what we do and how we live and how we act and so forth, examine
it using this threefold criteria. Is it for God's glory? The second
question, is it good for the church? And thirdly, how is it going
to affect my family? This family and my immediate
family. Well, you know, you hear this
sort of talk where it's nobody's business. It is if you're a member
of a body. And then someone says, well,
I don't intend to sacrifice, you don't say this, many people
do, my rights and my desires and my future for other people.
We will if we're part of a body. We will if we're part of a body.
We're members one of another. Turn to 1 Corinthians 12. What
Bob read in the study tonight is so important right here. talking about this body, this
church. And when we consider the Lord,
the head, and the general church of the firstborn, it doesn't
get quite as personal as it does when we think about the church,
the local church. So let's think about it that
way. What applies to that general body applies to this body, doesn't
it? So listen to this, chapter 12
of 1 Corinthians 12. The body's one. It has many members,
and all the members of that body being many are one body. So also
is Christ. For by one spirit are we all
baptized into this one body. We become a part of this body
of Christ. Whether we be Jews or Gentiles or male or female
or bond or free or old or young or rich or poor or educated or
uneducated, we've been all made to drink of one spirit. For the
body is not one member, it's many. If the foot shall say, well,
I'm not the hand, I'm not part of the body, I'll do what I want
to do. No, is it not therefore not of
the body? The ears shall say, well, I'm
not the eye. They don't depend on me to see. They depend on
you to hear. Is it not of the body? If the
whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole
body were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God
set the members. Me, you, every one of us, children,
older folks, young people, elders, women, men, singers, instrumentalists,
in the body as it pleased Him. As it pleased Him. And if they
were all one member, you wouldn't have a body. But now are they
many members, yet with just one body. One church. And the eye
cannot save the hand, I don't need you. The head can't save
the feet, I don't need you. Much more, those members of the
body which seem to be most feeble, unseen, unassuming, they're necessary. Those members of the body which
we think to be less honorable, we wouldn't want to think that,
but some people might think that. Upon these we bestow more abundant
honor, and our comely parts have more abundant comeliness. Actually,
our comely parts, those that are always on exhibition or like
up here, Mike's always up here, I'm up here, always seen, they
don't need any attention. You don't need any praise. Those parts that are seen so
much and out in the open, it's the parts that are maybe not
seen so much that need the encouragement and the comfort and the consolation
and to be told how important they are, how vital they are. That's what he says there. Read
that 23rd verse, and those members of the body which we think to
be of less importance Upon these, we need to bestow more abundant
honor. And our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
That's so vital. So vital. Our ribs hold us together,
but nobody ever sees them. That's right. Nobody ever sees
them. Our comely parts have no need.
They don't need a boost much, they don't need that much encouragement,
but some of the others do. They need to be remembered. All
right, that's... remembers one of another. No part of the body of Christ.
He has put them in that body as it pleases Him. And they have
a function and a usefulness and a ministry that He gave to them. and they're a vital part of that
body. And we've got to look at it. They've got to think that
way. We've got to think that way and make our plans accordingly
and our actions accordingly. All right, verse 6, having then
guilts differing according to the grace that's given to us.
All right, now usually when one mentions guilt, today in a church
or in religion or from the pulpit. Gifts, first thing people think
of, is the supernatural, unusual gifts of the Spirit. Speaking
in tongues, discerning of spirits, healing the sick, and so forth. Well, those gifts
at one time, were in the church powerfully. Our Lord Jesus Christ
came into this world. The Old Testament was written.
Genesis through Malachi. That was the Scriptures. And
when you read in the New Testament a reference to the Scriptures,
He died for our sins according to the Scriptures, we're talking
about the Old Testament. The New Testament wasn't written.
The New Testament was written later by his apostles, by Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John, and by Paul, and James, and others. Jude, these books were written
later. After our Lord died on the cross,
was buried and rose again, went back to glory, he used these
men. All right. They went out to preach the gospel,
these men, these twelve apostles, including Paul. And some of the
men, Timothy and Titus and others whom God raised up later. The
church at Corinth and Rome and so forth. And our Lord did what
He promised them He would do in Mark chapter 16. Turn over
there. Mark chapter 16. He told them
He'd give them His Holy Spirit. He breathed on them and said,
Receive the Holy Ghost. And He gave them gifts. Unusual
supernatural gifts, such as speaking in tongues, raising the dead,
Paul raised the dead, healing the sick, causing the lame to
walk. He gave them these supernatural
signs. Signs they were too, they were
credentials. Like a policeman comes in, says
he's a policeman, you say, I don't know that you're a policeman,
here's my credentials. And these men went forth to preach
a Messiah whom nobody knew. Christ was in the world and the
world knew Him not. He came to the Jews and they received Him
not. And our Lord sent these men to preach this Messiah, this
Christ, this Redeemer, that the Old Testament prophesied and
pictured and patterned. And He gave them credentials
and signs. I'm an apostle of God. Prove
it. Raise the dead. Heal the sick. Speak. Every man heard the gospel in
his own language. That's right. Or look at Mark
16. And he said, verse 15, to these
disciples, you go into all the world and preach the gospel to
every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved,
but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs, signs,
show us a sign. He did. He showed them a sign,
many signs. And signs are not for believers,
signs are for unbelievers. Believers don't need signs, unbelievers
do. And these signs, credentials,
shall follow them. In my name they'll cast out devils.
Don't you try that. In my name they'll speak with
new languages. You can't do that. I can't either. I'd go to Russia or China or
Africa or India or wherever and have to have an interpreter. But Paul didn't. Whatever language
was needed, that's what he spoke. He said, I speak with tongues
more than you all. They'll take up serpents, not
on purpose, to show off. Paul reached in to put a piece
of wood on the fire serpent clamped on his hand. One of those powerful,
poisonous serpents. He just shook it off into the
fire. And they all stood there and waited on him to die. And
he didn't die. And they said, he's a God. We
better listen to him. He got something to say. We don't need to do that to prove
we have come of God. We just read the scriptures.
The New Testament, it's been finished, been completed. The
Scriptures are completed now. But God sent these men with signs,
and if they drink any deadly thing, I do believe if Paul had
stood before a group of people and picked up a cup of poison
and drank it, God would have killed him for showing off and
drawing attention to himself. I believe he would have. I believe
if he had picked up a snake and said, I'm going to show you how
a How powerful I am, I'm going to pick a baby that died right
there. Moses died for doing something like that. Moses said, you want
me to get water out of this rock, remember? And God killed him. He said,
you didn't sanctify me, you exalted yourself. And you say, well,
God's not killing these men and doing it now. He will in due
time. Their foot will slide in due
time. Look at me, I can heal the sick. Look at me, I can do
this, that, and the other. No, sir. They lay hands on the
sick, they'll recover. That's what he said. Now turn
to Hebrews chapter 3. Hebrews chapter 3. Chapter 2. Hebrews chapter 2. Now let's
turn over there. Hebrews chapter 2. Now this is
so important. Verse 1. You remember in chapter 1 it
says, God spake to our fathers with the prophets, he hath in
these last days spoken to us by his Son. Verse 1 of chapter
2, Therefore we ought to give them more earnest heed to the
things which we have heard, lest at any time we let them slip
away. For if the words spoken by angels
and prophets and Old Testament men were steadfast, And every
transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of
reward. How shall we today escape if
we neglect so great salvation which at the first began to be
spoken to us by our Lord and was confirmed unto us by them
that heard him, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, James? also bearing them witness, both
with signs and wonders and different miracles and gifts of the Holy
Ghost according to His will." Now, brethren, if God was pleased
to do so, He could give me the gift of tongues. I'm not going
to profess to have what I don't have. If God was willing and
is in His purpose and plan, the gift of one of you, the gift
to lay hands on the sick and they recover, that would be all
right with me. I would rejoice because I have
got some sick folks I would love to see made whole. But we don't
need that as credentials. We have the Word. We don't need signs and wonders. We need thus saith the Lord.
And I found this to be true. profess to do these things, and
they don't do them. There's no blind seeing. The hospital's full of people.
If these men had the gifts, they could go up and down those, and
empty those rooms down there if they would. But everywhere
they're doing this, they're taking up an offering. That ought to
tell us something. It should. But God, I tell you, everywhere
you see these things, The focus is on the gifts and not on the
giver, not on Christ. And that defeats the very purpose. God gave these men these gifts
and signs and wonders to turn the attention of the people to
the gospel that they preach. But these men doing it today,
their attention is being turned to the Spirit and to the gifts
and to the preachers. And they're going to hear men
and not hear from God. But we're seeing miracles, we're
seeing the blind see. You know, we're seeing the deaf
hear, and we're seeing the lame walk,
and we're seeing dead men rise spiritually. And these blind
that are seeing by hearing our gospel will always see. Those people that were healed
back then died. These whom God are raising will
never die. So which miracle do you want?
Do you want to fix the body up or fix up the heart? Take your
choice. But there are gifts. All right.
Verse 6, having then gifts. Gifts right here between these
walls right here. Here they are. Having then gifts
differing according to the grace given to us. Whether prophecy,
let us prophesy. What is prophecy now? I'll tell
you what prophecy is, since the completion of the Scriptures.
Prophecy is the study of the Scriptures and the proper understanding
and preaching of the Word of God. That's this prophecy right
here. If we've been given that gift,
let's be about it. Preach the Word. That's what
Paul said to Timothy. Preach the Word, in season, out
of season. All right? If God has given to
you men here, to this man, the gift of preaching, studying the
Word, preaching the Word, let's prophesy according to the proportion
of faith. David said, I believe, therefore
have I spoken. Paul said, well, that's me. I
believe, therefore I speak. So according to the proportion
of faith God's given you, speak, preach. All right, here's another
gift, ministry. If we have the gift of ministry,
let's wait on our ministering. What would this mean, ministering,
ministry? Well, don't restrict it to preachers.
Don't restrict it to elders. All in the church who minister
to the needs of others are in the ministry. All who serve the
Lord's Church in any way are in the ministry, and they do
minister. Our Lord said, I came not to
be ministered unto, but to minister. And everyone who, like I said
this morning, gives a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple
is ministering. We are all in the ministry. Would
you say that this song service we just had, led by this brother,
It's a ministry. Boy, he ministered to me. In
the study when you prayed, you ministered to me. One of the
young boys, I told his mother about it today. I was standing
down front and he came by and patted me on the back. He ministered
to me. He showed he cared. Didn't say
anything, just popped me. But he paid attention to me and
he ministered to me and I just felt so good about it. You see
what I'm saying? We minister, we minister, we
minister. A smile, a handshake, an encouraging
word, a card in the mail, a letter, a telephone call in the name
of God to comfort, to encourage. Johnson, folks, we've been ministering
to you this week, haven't we? You and Jeremy and Vicki and
your trial. Been hard to do without them,
wasn't it? That's ministry. You've been given a gift to minister. Well, get busy. Keep on. Keep
doing it. Or he that teacheth on teaching.
We're talking here about men who've been given the gift to
teach. Teach the Word. And you women
have been given the gift to teach the younger women. Teach them. It's a gift. Do it diligently
and prayerfully. These are gifts. Or listen, he that exhorted.
Now look up that word exhort. What is it to exhort? What is
it to exhort? Well, let's review several times.
Let's look at it. Let's look it up. Hebrews 3.
Hebrews 3. That's the first thing I do in
studying the Word. I come upon a Word and wonder
what it means, and I'll try to find it in other places in the
Scripture. Hebrews 3, verse 12 and 13. Hebrews
3, 12 and 13. Lest there be in any of you an
evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God, but exhort
one another." Every one of us exhort, exhort one another daily
while it's called today. Lest any of you be hardened through
the deceitfulness of sin. What is it to exhort? It's to
comfort. It's to comfort. It's to give
consolation. It's to entreat. It's to advise. It's to encourage. It's to admonish
one another. That's exhorting. Hebrews, let
me show you another scripture. Hebrews 10. Exhort one another. Encourage one another. Admonish
one another. Comfort one another. Hebrews
10. Look at verse 24 and 25. Verse 24, listen, let us consider
one another to provoke, to encourage unto love and good works, not
forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the matter of some
is, but exhort one another, comfort one another, encourage one another,
so much the more, as you see the day approaching. We need
it more and more. These are gifts that are in this
church. Let's quit talking about tongues and start exhorting and
teaching and encouraging and lifting and ministering. We don't
need tongues. We don't need to fall on the
floor. I don't need to line you up and hit you in the head and
watch you fall. I can't figure out what they're doing. It's
bad on my back to fall on the floor. But I notice somebody's
always there to catch them. And somebody's got a rug to cover
them. Oh. All right, let's go on. Listen.
He that giveth. You with me? Verse 8, Romans
12. He that giveth. Well, everybody gives. The ability
to give is the gift of God, and everybody has the ability to
give to some extent. I think even the young people
here, when you come to worship, bring an offering. If it's a
nickel, a quarter, a dollar, He said, well, we don't have
much money. Well, a lot of folks here don't have much money. The
widow didn't have much money, but she gave. She gave her two
pennies. Christ said she gave all she
had. He didn't say anything about anybody's giving but her. Didn't
say anything about anybody's gift but her. He watched her
and called attention to the fact she gave and let The Scripture
says, upon the first day of the week, let every one of you, every
one of you give. So nobody's exempted from giving.
It's a privilege to bring an offering and come before the
Lord. That's what Psalm says. But what he's saying here is
some people, right here in this verse, he's including it with,
and this is a gift that everybody has to some extent, but some
people, are blessed to give more and to carry a heavy load and
to give liberally. That's what this word simplicity
is, give with liberality. Give with liberality. Let him
that has that give to support missions, TV, radio, missionaries,
let him give liberally because God blessed him in that way.
We minister, everybody ministers according to the gift God's given
you. And let him do it with simplicity, liberality without fanfare. Don't
call attention to it. When we go to call an attention
to what we're doing and what we're giving, we lose the blessing.
Don't call attention to it. God who seeth in secret will
reward you openly. But if he's given you the ability
to help others, You help them. You help them. And don't do it
with interest. Do you know the Scripture is
against a believer lending money to another believer with interest?
Usury, it's called. Look it up. Don't do that. God
didn't give it to you for you to pay Him interest. The Lord
didn't give me what I have for me to pay Him interest, and I'm
not supposed to give it to my brother and demand 10%. Now, that's not it. Just let
him give, hoping for nothing in return. He that ruleth. That's a gift to rule. Well,
that falls upon the elders and the pastor in the church mainly.
But now, wait a minute. Fathers, you rule your home. Do it with
love. Do it with diligence. That's right. You rule mothers. Don't let the child raise you.
You raise the child. You've got to respond. You've
got a gift to rule teachers, foremen, employers. Do it. Rule with diligence, authority. I'll tell you one of the things
missing in this generation is authority. Back when I was growing
up, I talked to Doris about this before we came to church, school
teachers were in authority. And the schools had discipline.
What a teacher said, it was the law. Policemen, the president
was held in esteem. Anybody in authority was highly
respected and obeyed. We said yes sir and no sir. But
when you lose that, and I think one reason we've lost it in this
day is we've lost His authority. If God reigns and rules in your
heart, you won't have any trouble with authority. If we ever bow
to His authority, we'll never have any problem saying yes sir,
no sir, You know, when this thing started in the 60s, one of my
children came home and said the school teacher told him to quit
saying, yes, sir, and yes, ma'am. Now, that's bad, isn't it? If
I had a child say, yes, ma'am, and yes, sir, I'd pat him on
the back. But that's when it started. Rule
with diligence. Well, I got clear off the way
that day time, didn't I? But listen, here's a gift, show
mercy. Verse 8, show mercy, do it with
cheerfulness. Show mercy. All right, I'm going
to read the rest of the chapter because here's what it is. The
rest of the chapter from verse 9 through verse 18 are the Ten
Commandments of the Royal Law. Brethren, what's
the Royal Law? Turn to James 2. I'll show you
the royal law. I'm going to quit. I'm going
to give you these Ten Commandments. James 2, verse 8. If you fulfill the royal law,
that's the king's law, according to the Scripture, you'll
love your neighbors yourself, and you'll do well. You remember
the Lord Jesus said, I give you a commandment that you love one
another. That's the King's Law. Now here's
the Ten Commandments of the King's Law. Let me give it to you. Verse 9, let your love be sincere
without hypocrisy. If you're going to hate something,
hate what's evil. Don't hate one another. Cleave to that which
is good. Let your love be sincere. Verse
10, here's the second one, be kindly affection, be kind one
to another. With brotherly love, in honor,
preferring one another. Let you go first. You go first. You're good at that. You're good
at that. Verse 11, number 3, don't be
lazy in whatever you do. Not slothful in business. Be
fervent and dedicated to what you're doing, do it heartily
as unto the Lord. See what he's saying there? Don't
be lazy in your business, in your work, but be firm as if
you were serving the Lord Himself, working for the Lord, working
for the King. That's the commandment. Verse
12, rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice in hope. Be patient unto
His tribulation and providence and continue in prayer. Verse
13, share what you have with others, distributing to the necessity
of the saints, giving to hospitality, open your homes, open your hearts,
open your hands. That's the fifth commandment,
share what you have. The sixth commandment, be kind to your enemies, even
those that persecute you, bless them. You know what Stephen said? Lord, don't lay this sin to their
charge. They don't know what they're
doing. Our Lord said that from the cross. Father, forgive them.
They don't know what they're doing. I know these are not easy. They're difficult. But these
are the commandments of the royal law. Bless them that curse you. Don't curse them. Don't return
evil for evil. All right, six. Or seven, verse 15, be of one
heart. Rejoice with them that do rejoice.
Be glad with those that are blessed and weep with them that weep.
A strong heart will produce a strong interest in the things of others
so that we're able to rejoice with those that are blessed from
heaven and we're able to weep with those that going through
great trials. Be of one heart. Number eight,
verse 16. Verse 15 said, Be of one heart.
Verse 16 said, Be of one mind. Be of the same mind, one toward
another. Be united in your doctrines, united in your goals, united
in your sentiments. Be of the same mind, one toward
another. And mind not high things. Don't cater to high. folks and
important people who think they're important. Condescend to men
of humble estate, low estate. Adjust yourself to people of
every station. This is done when we have a deep
sense of our own unworthiness. Look at the last line, be not
wise in your own conceits. That will help us adjust to every
people of every station and calling, won't it? If we don't think we're
We're anybody. All right, verse 17, his number
is number 9. Don't get revenge. Recompense
to no man evil for evil. Hatred and revenge is contrary
to our gospel. We're not to repay evil for evil. Provide things honest in the
sight of all men. Deal honestly, not deceitfully.
All right, number 10, verse 18. If it's possible, as much as
life in you, as much as possible, live peaceably with all men. With all men. You know the chief
enemy of peace is the tongue. That's the chief offender. causes
more problems and trouble and heartache than any other single
member of this body. And we've all got one. We all have one. All right, in
closing, dearly beloved, avenge not yourself. Give place to wrath. Mr. Spurgeon said one time, anger
and revenge will never win the heart of an enemy. It may be that he'll never be
your friend. It may be he'll never believe your gospel, but
one thing I know, your wrath won't make him be your friend
and won't make him believe your gospel. So love him, if you can. Give place to wrath. It's written,
vengeance is mine, I'll repay, saith the Lord. Therefore, if
your enemy hunger, feed him. If he's thirsty, give him a drink.
In so doing, it may be You'll heap coals of fire on his head.
You'll be convicted of his attitude and spirit. It may be. But our
wrath won't convict him. So verse 21, be not overcome
of evil. Don't let evil and evil thoughts
and evil men dictate your course and action and character. Don't
let evil overcome you. Don't be swept up in this. Like
I said this morning, let's not be conformed to the world. Let's
not be swept up in this thing. Don't let evil men and evil thoughts
dictate your course. You dictate from the Scripture
your course. Let God dictate your course.
Don't let hatred and ill feelings get the better of you. Don't
let it happen. Don't let revenge replace that
divine grace of forgiveness. But overcome evil with good. overcome evil with good. Oh and
I hope that was a blessing to all of you. Let's sing a closing
hymn.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
