Persevering in perilous, perilous
times. And of course this is Paul writing
to young Timothy. Timothy, a minister of the gospel. And Paul writing these words
from prison in Rome. And he says, this know, Timothy,
this know also that in the last days When would you say these last days are? What does he refer to here? What
are the last days? Well, he's talking about all
the days from the time of our Lord's incarnation and death
to now. These are the last days. You
see, according to the scriptures, time is divided into three parts. is from Adam to Moses, Adam to
Moses, from Moses to Christ, and from Christ to his return
and the end of the world. These are the last days. That's
so. And in these last days, perilous,
perilous times shall come. Perilous times are upon us. He's
talking about here now in religion. in religion, difficult, perilous
times. And I'll tell you this, in my
lifetime, of course, history has a way of repeating itself. It's just as you study church
history, as you study these last days from the apostles on, the
same thing occurs again and again and again. Men go through the
same stages of error and apostasy wickedness and in the name of
religion and idolatry and all of these things. What we're seeing
today is no new thing. There's nothing new under the
sun. It's happened since the days of the apostle. But I am honestly just taken
aback. I'm just shocked. I know a little
bit about the scriptures. I know something of the gospel
and the glory of God and the writings of the apostles. And
what I see today in religion is almost unbelievable. It is almost unbelievable. And
I could give so many illustrations here. These boys on television,
the big muscle men, you know, with the chains breaking rocks,
the power of God, they call it. I never thought I'd live seeing
anything like that in the name of God. I never thought I'd live
to see some of these couples that are on television singing
these romantic songs to Jesus, you know, all dressed up in their
fancy duds and diamond rings and all of this background and
atmosphere and settings and drums. I never, never, never dreamed
that I'd ever see anything like that in the name of God. I just
never dreamed that I would, what I'm seeing. And what I'm also
seeing is this in America. Everybody's a Christian. Everybody. Let me give you an
example. Last Wednesday night, most of you were gone, and people
were standing around talking. I looked back in the vestibule,
and there was a man standing back there. Because we have a
great deal of this here. We have a lot of people coming
by who need help, and we help a lot of people. You do. by your
gifts and all. This church sends over $600 a
month to social services, which buys prescriptions and drugs
and food and clothing for people who are in need. And then people
come by here. This is the main thoroughfare.
This is the main highway. And they stop in here almost
every day, Martha. Almost every day. Some two or
three times a day. and we helped them. We have a
grocery account up here at the grocery store, we help people.
But anyway, one of these fellows was standing in the back, a pretty
man about my size, and ill-clad, and pretty much the worst for
wear. And I knew they needed help,
so I walked back there, and he said, You know me, I've been
here before, and he said, I live out in Grayson. I'm up against
it, don't have any food, and you've helped us before, and
I need some help. And I said, well, okay. But I
said, let me talk to you a minute. Let me just talk to you a minute.
Will you let me talk to you? Okay. I said, you see this fellowship
of people here? These are believers. These are
people who know God. They're Christians. And people
who are in this congregation, they help one another. If anybody
gets in need, they help them. If anybody needs their rent paid,
or groceries bought, or drugs, or prescriptions, or hospital,
they help one another. And I said, where do you go to
church? He said, nowhere. And I said,
well, you see, if you were a believer, if you were a Christian, if you
were... And he interrupted me. And his face flushed. And he
said, don't you question my Christianity. He said, I am a Christian. And
he said, because I don't go to church or worship God doesn't
mean I'm not a Christian. He said, I love Jesus and Jesus
loves me. And don't you talk to me anymore
about me not being a Christian. And he stomped out. What I'm
saying is this. See, everybody's a Christian.
This is what television has done, and this is what high-pressure
fundamentalism has done. This is what getting children
down the aisles as infants have done, and primary and junior
department dragging them in front, shaking hands, saying, you saved.
We've saved this whole country three or four times now. Everybody's
a Christian. There's no fear of God, there's
no love for God, there's no devotion to God, there's no love for the
Word of God, there's no consecration to God, there's no charity among
the people, there's no love for one another, there's no forgiving
spirit. We've got the crookedest government in Washington we've
ever had, and in Senate and Congress and local governments and state
governments and city governments, but every one of them is somebody's
deacon or elder or steward in a church. Did you know that?
It's just rotten. The whole foundation is rotten,
but it's Christian. Is that not true? These are perilous
times. They're testing times and difficult
times. And look, here's the way he describes
them. Men should be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters,
arrogant, proud, blasphemers. Blasphemers. What is blasphemy? It has to do with the holy name
of God. It has to do with the majesty
of God. It has to do with holding God
in the highest esteem. And men are so careless with
the name of God. Even the preachers are so careless
with the holy name of God. Disobedient to parents. There's
no authority. You're teachers. We've got a
whole lot. You can't even discipline a child
in school today. The parents will be down on your
neck. That's right. There's no discipline.
There's no authority. The bosses can't correct a man
working for them or they'll shut the whole mill down and have
a strike. If you correct one of them, there's no authority.
But they're all deacons. They're all church members, they're
all Christians, but there's no authority. Disobedient, no authority
in the home, no authority in the school, no authority in the
plants, no authority on the job, and people won't work. You can't
make them work either. They'll file a grievance. You
pay them, but they won't work. And they're all Christians. Have
a blessed one, I'm going to have them ask them. They're all Christians. unthankful, murmuring, unholy,
without natural affection. Without natural affection. You
can carry that to a lot of places. Truce breakers. They don't mind
breaking an agreement. They don't mind divulging words
spoken in confidence. They're truce breakers. They'll
hold an office Like one of these fellas in the government, hold
an office and be a confidant of the President, and then when
he gets fired, he'll write a book exposing everybody. Truce breakers. Covenant breakers. People get
married, they don't intend to stay together, they may make
a promise before the preacher that they're going to be true
to one another to the death, do them part, but they lie and
they know it, and they don't have any thought whatsoever of
breaking that covenant with God Almighty. Truce breakers. But
they're all Christians. Ever-blessed one, I'm going to
heaven, ask them. False accusers, they're lounge people. Don't
have any foundation for what to say. But they don't need a
foundation, they just need to have heard it. They love to repeat
slander, but they're all Christians. They're incontinent. There's
no restraint. There's no restraint on words,
no restraint in temperament, no restraint with passions, no
restraint. They'll argue, fuss, fight, quarrel. No restraint. Incontinent. Intemperate. They're fierce. Fierce and despisers of those
that are righteous. Despisers of those that believe
the gospel. They despise them. They're traitors.
They're heady. High-minded, wise in the things
of this world, lovers of pleasure more than they love God Almighty.
Is that not the religious world we live in? It's frustrating. I heard a song years ago, stop
this world and let me off. I feel that way sometimes, don't
you? Just put the brakes on, let me get off. I don't ever
see anything on television or hear anything on the radio in
the name of God, not anything, not anything that I think is
worth ten cents, nothing, I mean nil, nothing. You mean my favorite
preacher? I mean your favorite preacher.
It's just not there. We're living in a day of total
compromise, total departure from this Word. Is that right? You
know it's right and I know it's right too. And all of this, they
have a form of godliness. They use the name God. They have
their special holy days. They have their special church
services, and Easter, and Christmas, and Lent, and all of the different
days, holy days, Sabbath days. They have a form of godliness.
They carry Bibles. They wear crosses around their
necks. They wear crosses in their earrings. They wear Jesus pins,
great big Jesus pins. They say words of benediction
and words of prayer at football games and basketball games. And
they have a form of godliness. They hold hands and pray. They
have all of this outward form of godliness, but watch it, they
deny the power of godliness, the power of it. What am I talking
about? Listen to four things, and I'm
telling you the truth. First, they deny the power of sin. They
deny what happened in the garden. Modern religion denies what happened
in the garden. By one man sin entered this world,
and death by sin, so death passed upon all men. They deny original
sin. The religious preachers and people
of this day deny, absolutely deny, original sin. The nature
of it, the effect of it, the consequences of it, the evil
of it, the exceeding sinfulness of sin, they deny that. There's
none good, no, not one. There's none righteous. There's
none that seeketh after God. They altogether become unprofitable
with denying the origin of sin and the nature of sin and the
power of sin. Sin has in its great power has
conquered every human being and brought that human being into
subjection to sin. That's right. And then secondly,
they deny the power of God. The power of God. The God that's
preached today and the God that's worshipped today is impotent.
He's not almighty, he's impotent. He wants to and can't. Isn't
that right? He wills to and men won't let
him. He's totally dependent on the will of the creature. They
deny the sovereign, omnipotent, almighty, infinite, eternal power
of Almighty God to do what he will, when he will, with whom
he will. My day of religion is denying
the power of God. That's right. They have a form
of godliness. They have a show of godliness,
but they're denying the power of sin, the inability of the
sinner, and they're denying the power of God, the almighty power
of God to save whom He will, to have mercy on whom He will,
and to harden whom He will. And I'll tell you something else
they're denying. They're denying the power and efficacy of the
blood of Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ by his
death on Calvary's cross redeemed all for whom he suffered. Dear
Lamb of God, thy precious blood shall never lose its power till
all the ransomed Church of God be saved to sin no more. As since
by faith I saw that stream, thy flowing wound supply, redeeming
love and grace has been my thing and will be till I die. They're
denying the power, the efficacy, the sufficiency of the blood
of Jesus Christ. I'm telling you the truth. Perilous times. We are engulfed
with perilous times. We're surrounded by voices, religious
voices. They're just everywhere. And
they're all saying the wrong thing, believe me. They're all
denying the power of God and the power of sin and the power
of Christ's blood. They're sitting around in chairs
discussing, they're discussing God, and they're discussing the
mysteries of God, and they don't even have a Bible in their hands.
They're discussing what they think. They have a form of godliness,
perilous times. This describes them. But they
have a form of godliness and they deny the power. They deny
the power of sin, they deny the power of God, they deny the power
of Christ's blood, and they deny the power of the Holy Spirit. One man said this morning on
the radio, and Doris turned to me and she said, you know, as
old as he is, and as long as he's been around, and as much
as he's been preaching, It just seems he'd know better than what
he's saying. And what he was saying is this.
He said, folks, try God. He said, try religion. He said, you haven't tried it.
If you don't like it, you can give it up. It's like God's a suit over here,
and you go try him on, and you say, well, I don't fancy it.
I believe I'll just leave it. Try God. You think of this. This
is a man's hair whiter than mine. He's been preaching 40 years.
And the man doesn't have the slightest concept of what redemption
is. The Holy Spirit regenerates a
sinner, quickens a sinner, calls the dead from the spiritual grave,
gives them a new heart, a new nature, a new life, the life
of God. Brings them to need God and to
want God and to love God and be willing to receive God. And
He gives them a new heart. You don't try it on like a suit.
It's a new nature. That's the power of God. The
power of God. It's not by might nor by power,
it's by my spirit, saith the Lord. We're born not of the will
of man, the will of the flesh, we're born of God. Shocking. I just can't believe
what I'm hearing. I can't believe what I'm seeing.
And yet, over here in the Old Testament, he said they prophesy
falsely from the priest to the prophet. They're all given to
covetousness. And yet, my people like to have
it so, God said. Now look at this next verse.
And for of this sort are they which creep into houses and leave
captive silly women, laden with sins, led away with divers lusts. Now we're looking at today's
religion. Are you with me? Perilous times. I mean perilous
times. And he describes these folks
who are operating in the name of God, and this kind of people
they are. And they have a form of godliness. They call it God,
and they call it Bible, and they call it heaven, they call it
hell, and they call it Jesus, and they call it blood. They
use these terms, but they got the different dictionary. They
don't mean the same. Talk about grace even. And they
have a form of godliness, and they deny the power. They deny
the power of sin, and the power of God, and the power of the
blood, and the power of the Holy Spirit, and the power of a new
life, and the power of a new creature, and the fact that God,
salvations of the Lord, in His irresistible, invincible power! You see what I'm saying? Our
gospel came to you in power! Not in logic, argument, word,
but in the power of God! Now watch this. Verse 6. These false professors, false
preachers, false teachers, they worked just like their daddy
worked. Satan. Now don't get upset with
me, but our Lord looked at the religious Pharisees of His day
and He said, You are of your father, the devil, and his works
will you do. His works will you do. They worked
just like their daddy, these false religious preachers. How
did their daddy work? In the garden, Satan didn't come
to Adam. He didn't attack Adam. He attacked
the woman, not the man. So preachers today, every cult,
every sect, Every denomination, Methodist, Baptist, Catholic,
all the rest of them, Church of Christ, Church of God, Camelite,
you name it, every one of them. They work themselves into the
favor and good graces of the weaker vessel. Women are the prey and the victims
of all these preachers because they're the weaker vessel. Every cult, every sect, every
denomination today is dominated by women. Is that not true? Of
course it's true. It's dominated by women. It has
been for a hundred years. Without women, the Methodist
Church would have closed down years ago. The Pentecostals and
the Assemblies of God, you watch them on television. It's the
emotional women. It's the way all these preachers
got their silly wives standing beside them, trying to look sanctified,
you know, and pious and sanctimonious and carried on. That's true,
I'm telling you the truth. Every denomination today is dominated
by women full of the sin of self-righteousness. The very exaltation of Mary is
a part of it. Christ is the Redeemer, Christ
is the Savior, Christ is the Mediator, but silly men, feminine
men, feminine priests, and that's what most of my very effeminate
priests have put a woman on the throne and made her the Mediator
between God and men. And women are a dominating religion. Arminian free will, flesh exalting
religion. And I can show you in the word
of God how wrong that is. I want to give you several scriptures
with your patience. Turn to Genesis chapter 3. Genesis chapter 3. Now be patient
with me and jot this down. Genesis chapter 3 verse 16. This is after the fall. And Adam
was not deceived, the woman was. Genesis 3.16, unto the woman
he said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception
in sorrow. You shall bring forth children,
and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over
you. God said that. Rule. Alright, turn with me to 1 Corinthians
14. Now let's look at the scripture. And Paul said to Timothy from
down there in jail, back under 2,000 years ago, he said these
fellows creep into houses and that's what they creep in and
leave captive after their religious creeds and were silly women.
laden with sin, led away with diverse lust, desire for recognition
and prestige and power and rulership and authority and leadership.
They're even ordaining women to preach now and teach. There's
some churches that teachers are all women. Even the men's Bible
class are taught by women. In 1 Corinthians 14, listen to
the Word of God, verse 34. 1 Corinthians 14, 34. Let your
women keep silence in the churches. It's not permitted unto them
to speak, and that goes for television and radio too. They're commanded
to be under obedience, as also saith God's law. And if they
will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. It's
a shame for a woman to speak in the church, to teach, or to
usurp authority to preach. That's what God's Word says.
It goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. That's what God's
Word says. And first, turn to Ephesians
5. Let's just go through the word
here. Ephesians chapter 5. I'm not being ugly. I'm trying
to be truthful. And I'm saying that we're departing
from the Word of God. We're just completely ignoring
the Word of God. Because it's convenient. Do it
our way. No matter what God says. Ephesians 5. Listen to this.
Verse 22. And you young girls, listen to
me. I'm telling you the truth. You say, you're an old wetback,
a throwback. Well, that's all right. Verse 22. For wives, submit yourselves
unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is
the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, and
he's the Savior of the body. Therefore, as the church is subject
unto Christ, so let the wives be subject to their husbands
in everything. And husbands, love your wives.
Treat them tenderly and kindly. Be grateful for them just like
Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. All right, let's look at 1 Timothy
2. 1 Timothy 2. 1 Timothy 2, verse 11. Verse Timothy 2 tells
us Men how to act and the ladies
how to dress, how to behave themselves, professing godliness. Verse 11,
and let the women, boy let me show you verse 9,
take these gals on television in the name of God, listen to
this, in like manner that women adorn themselves in modest apparel
with shamefacedness and sobriety. Not with plaited hair, gold,
pearls, and costly array. I bet we could run our mission
program on what it costs those gals to dress, you know, in the
name of God. I bet you we support one missionary
all year. But that which becometh women
professing godliness. Let your women learn in silence
with all subjection. I suffer not a woman to teach,
nor to usurp authority over a man, but to be in silence. Now go
back to my text, and I'm... Brother Maine, you're loaded
this morning, yeah? But I'll tell you why, I'm just
unhappy with what's... Aren't you unhappy with religion?
With your relative's religion? with what they call godliness. It's denying the powers, denying
the truth. It's denying the Word of God.
It's a joke. It's a masquerade. It's hypocrisy. It's a charade,
isn't it? In the name of my great God.
And in verse 6, this is where a lot of it is. They lead silly
women. All these preachers got a following
of silly women. They don't know anything about
God. I drove by a Nazarene church going to Cincinnati the other
day and there was a woman cutting the grass even. I mean, one thing
to occupy the pulpit is another thing to cut the grass. I thought as I went by, where
are the men? Where are the men? God said men lift holy hands
in prayer. Men ought to pray and not to
faint. Men of God rise and stand up. It's awful. And look at verse
7, they're ever learning. Ever learning, learning Bible
facts, writing books, learning about prophecy and history and
laws and dispensations, ever learning Bible studies, Bible
conferences, ever learning, learning, learning, and never, never, never,
never, ever able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Who is that? I am the truth. Christ said, I am the truth. That's who that's talking about.
They know the historical fact. They reform, but they never repent. They pray, but they never plead
for mercy. They testify, but they never
turn from their idols. They boast of what they know,
but they never bow to Christ. The truth. Him who is the truth. They never come to see Him. Did you ever hear one of them
really preach Christ lately? I mean, all they mention is His
name except Jesus. I'm talking about, have you heard
any of these fellows take the Word and show how that in the
book of Ruth, the kinsman-redeemer is the theme all the way through,
Christ the kinsman-redeemer. Have you ever heard one take
that rock in the Old Testament, that rock's Christ, or that Passover's
Christ, or take that Ark of Noah and show how that's Christ? Take that serpent lifted up and
show how that Christ took the nature of His people. He was
made in the likeness of sinful flesh. He became like us, like
Moses lifted up that brazen serpent that was made in the likeness
of the fiery serpent and lifted it up. How that God Almighty
requires that Christ suffer and die and obey the Lord to give
us a righteousness that His justice and holiness demand. Do you ever
hear that? Christ is the truth. You see, my friends, this book,
and I'm talking about from Genesis, chapter 2 and 3, when Adam fell,
and they were standing there naked, or rather, they were clothed
in their fig leaf aprons, and trying to cover their nakedness.
And God took the fig leaf aprons. You can't cover your sins with
your church membership and righteousness and work. And God slew a lamb,
slew an animal. and covered Adam and Eve with
the skin from that Adam. It had to die to cover their
sins. That animal had to provide a
covering between God and them for their sins. That's Christ
the truth. And then you come on through
in Exodus, He's the Passover Lamb. In Leviticus, he's the
atonement, how that the high priest went into the Holy of
Holies, and that, you see, that high priest putting that blood
on the mercy seat where it brought the shekinah glory between the
cherubim. You see, that mercy seat covered
the broken law. That wasn't just a ceremony,
that was a picture of Christ. Christ is the truth of the priesthood,
and the truth of the atonement, and the truth of the mercy seat,
and the truth of the substitution is Christ. The whole book of
Leviticus is Christ. Numbers, the serpent lifted up,
that's Christ. Deuteronomy, go right on through
the Bible. Christ is my shepherd. Christ
is my scapegoat. That's what I try to preach to
you. And what disturbs me is these folks come along with their
big show and their big numbers, you know, and their band and
their thousand dollar suits and four and five carat rings and
four or five limousines parked out front and half a million
dollar home and big school and hospital and folks get all excited
over them. It's enough to tear your heart
out. They're crooks. They're conmen. They're ambassadors
of Satan. And they're deceiving multitudes,
and they're leading captive, silly women. And their movement
is a movement taking men to hell. I'm telling you that. We must
not leave the simplicity of Christ. The simplicity of Christ. Ever
learning, ever learning. Never, never able to come to
a knowledge of the truth. But, verse 8, it's just like
Janus and Jambres, those two fellows in Egypt, withstood Moses,
so do these also resist the truth. And did you know the strange
thing is there's not a grace preacher in the whole batch?
They all hate sovereign grace. That ought to tell you something.
With all of their competition, with all their different names,
now you can name them what you want to, Protestant, Catholic,
Jew, you can name them Catholic, Missionary Baptist, Southern
Baptist, name what you want to, Church of Christ, Church of God,
they all hate total depravity, unconditional election, particular
redemption, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints.
They're all in agreement, they hate salvation of the Lord, every
one of them. And they'll resist the truth,
and their men are corrupt minds and reprobate concerning the
faith. But, verse 9, they'll proceed no further. Their folly
will be manifest to all, as these fellows in Egypt was. And then
Paul talks about himself. Even God's choice apostle was
not without persecution. And he says, verse 12, all that
live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But verse
13, these evil men and seducers will wax worse and worse. You
can expect it, deceiving and being deceived. Now watch this.
But, he says, continue thou. And that's what I say to you
this morning. I just encourage you, continue.
Continue thou in the things which you've learned. What have you
learned? What have you learned? You've been here so long, so
much. What have you learned? Well, I'll tell you what I've
learned. And Paul said down here, verse 15, from a child. Some
of you have been here since you were children. Paul, Mindy, Susan,
Sandy, Becca, since little children, Jonathan. What have you learned? But I'll tell you what I've learned.
I've learned something of the character of God. Have you? Who
He is. Frank, who he is? You learned
from a child who he is, didn't you? You and Janet. Who he is? He's God. He's God. Omnipotent. Omniscient. Omnipresent. He's God. I've learned something, secondly,
of the nature and effect of sin. Sin's not just in a box or a
bottle. Sin's in the heart. It's a nature
with which we're born. It plagues and permeates and
pollutes me and you by birth, in our hearts by nature. Isn't
that right? I've learned that. That sin can't be put away by
promises or professions, it can only be put away by blood. Blood,
the blood of God. You learned that? And thirdly,
I've learned something of the covenant mercies of God. That
God's not waiting to see how things are going to turn out.
that He decreed how they're going to turn out. I've learned that. He chose us in Christ before
the world began. That He's a victorious, conquering
God who will do what He will, when He will, with whom He will.
You learn that? I've learned something about that. And I've
learned something of the person and work of Jesus Christ in all
these years. His work is effectual. My Lord
doesn't try to save people. He came to save them. My Lord's victorious. My Lord
reigns. He's seated at the right hand
of God. His work is finished. All for whom he obeyed will be
righteous and all for whom he died shall be cleansed. I believe
that. I believe it more today than
I did yesterday. He's victorious. He cannot fail. He shall see
of the travail of his soul and be satisfied. The pleasure of
the Lord shall prosper in his hand. I believe that. I've learned
something of the magnitude of this great thing called regeneration,
the new birth. The magnitude of it, the glory
of it. That article, George, you mentioned
I wrote on the back of the bulletin last Sunday. I believe salvation
is a new creation. It's life from the dead. It's
resurrection. It's the life of God. It's something
God does for a sinner. It's not some silly profession
or easy believism or walking an aisle or turning over a new
leaf. It's life from above. And I say,
who am I and what is my house that God should show mercy to
me? Who am I that He should save such a dead dog? I'm amazed that
God could ever love me. so full of sin, so covered over
with shame. Make me to walk with Him who
is above me. Cleanse me by the power of His
redeeming name. Oh, I tell you, what a grand
and glorious and great gift of salvation. Magnitude of it. The glory of it. I've learned something of His
divine providence and daily care. What have you learned? Well,
he said in verse 14, I'll quit, he said, you continue in the
things that you've learned and been assured of. Now watch this,
knowing of whom you learned them. Now I've got to mention this,
knowing of whom you've learned. Now listen, Paul may to some
extent have been referring to himself here, but I don't think
so. I don't think so. I think he
knew he was the human estimate But he knows that a man must
be taught of God. And he that hath learned of the
Father, Christ said, cometh unto me. People who are taught of
men will have a man's religion which endures for a while and
offers a false peace and a false refuge. But those who are indeed
taught of God in the truth of Christ have a solid assurance
and peace that leads them to say, with Job of old, I know
my Redeemer liveth. Continue in the things which
you've learned, knowing of whom you learned them, in these perilous
times, in these difficult, difficult times. I don't know how profitable such
a message is, but I do know that somebody needs to say something.
Somebody needs to say something. Because it's like a giant snow
slide coming down the hill. It's just taking all the trees
and the houses and everybody with it. It just seems like everybody's
taken up in this giant religious movement that's just slipping
and sliding down the hill and getting bigger, more colossal,
more terrible as it goes and perilous. And what I'm saying
is what Paul says here, you who have learned something, don't
be deceived. And Christ said this, he said
they'll deceive the elect if it's possible. taken up with
them, but continue in these things you've learned, and be not moved
away from the hope of the gospel. Our Father, what perilous, disruptive, and
destructive times are upon us and about us, and we listen to
hear something that glorifies You, and we don't hear it. We
look to see some evidence of your hand and a revelation of
your son and his glory, and we don't see it. And religion today is taken up
with a total compromise of the principles and truth of thy word. Lord, be our teacher. Establish
us, and we shall be established. Plant our feet firm on the rock,
Christ Jesus, but more than anything, establish Thy word of truth and
grace in our hearts. Give us an understanding of Your
word and an eye to see the glory and beauty of Christ Jesus and
an ear to hear and rejoice in His word. Take this message and
use it for whatever it pleases Thee. Deliver us from this present
generation, this perverse religious movement, and set our hearts
on Christ, and Christ alone. In his name we pray. Amen.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
