It is Finished!

Let it be Love
End of album

Notes

The album ends here, and it ends on the one word in the Christian faith that is past tense and done. It is finished. Not being finished. Not almost. Finished - a cry that, the song says, broke out through eternity.

I put one verse in this song aimed straight at a specific error, and I want to be plain about it. Some still say, Not yet, not quite, as though His cross waits on our might. There is a whole way of doing Christianity that keeps the cross slightly open - that needs your effort, your decision, your performance to complete what Christ supposedly only started. The song calls that what it is, a shifting of His Word. We add no thing to what He gave. His finished work alone HAS SAVED. Past tense. Has saved. You cannot finish a finished thing.

And notice where the album chose to stop. In the Little Things spent fourteen songs on faithfulness, wounds, gatekeeping, and love - all the things we are called to do and to suffer. Then it closes by taking the weight of all of it off your back. No more striving. The little things still matter, but they were never holding up your salvation. That was finished on a tree before you drew a breath. The last word of the album is rest - let us rest in what He's done - and it is the only word strong enough to end on.

Lyrics

[VERSE 1]
When Jesus hung upon the tree,
A cry broke out through eternity.
Ooooh-ah-eh-yo, “It is finished,” mercy cried,
And at that word, all darkness died.

[VERSE 1 tail]
The sky was torn, the veil undone,
Oooh-aaah-yeh-ohh, light pouring from the Son.

[PRE-CHORUS]
Oooh-ah-ah-yo-ehh… the night gave way to dawn,
Ae-ee-ohh-aehh… and chains were broken, gone.

[CHORUS]
It is finished - ooo-ahh-ohh, it is done!
Grace poured down through the Risen One.
No more striving, no more pain,
Love has shattered every chain.
Ooohh it is finished - it is done,
Hope is rising with the morning sun.

[VERSE 2]
Some still say, “Not yet, not quite,”
As though His cross waits on our might.
But who are we to shift His Word?
His victory forever stands, assured.

[VERSE 2 tail]
Oooh-ah-yeh-ohh we add no thing to what He gave,
His finished work alone HAS SAVED.

[PRE-CHORUS]
Oooh-ah-ah-yo-ehh… the night gave way to dawn,
Ae-ee-ohh-aehh… and iron shackles gone.

[CHORUS]
It is finished - ooo-ahh-ehh, it is done!
Grace streams down from the Holy One.
No more striving, no more pain,
Love has broken every chain.
Ooohh it is finished - it is done,
Hope is rising with the morning sun.

[BRIDGE]
Oooh-aaah-ae-ee, let us rest in what He’s done,
Ee-ya-oooh, in the victory He won.
Ooo-ohh-aeh His promise deep and true,
Ee-ahh-ae His word will carry through.

[VERSE 3]
No chosen heart will slip away,
His voice still calls the ones that stray.
Oooh the Shepherd holds us near,
His finished work dissolves all fear.

[PRE-CHORUS]
Oooh-ah-ah-yo-ehh… the night gave way to dawn,
Ae-ee-ohh-aehh… and death’s dominion gone.

[FINAL CHORUS]
It is finished - ooo-ahh-ehh-yo, it is done!
Chains lie broken by the Holy Son.
We stand redeemed, restored anew,
Grace eternal, ancient, true.
Ooohh it is finished - it is done,
Hope is rising like the morning sun.

[EXTENDED OUTRO]
Finished… finished… oooh it is finished…
Finished… finished… oooh it is finished…
Aaaah-YEH-ohhhh-ahhhh…
Oooh-ahh-yo-ehh… Ae-ee-ohh-aehh…
Finished… finished… oooh it is finished…
Finished… finished… oooh it is finished…
