When Every Friend Fades

by Brandan Kraft, © 2025
When the Wounds Run Deep
Deeper Than the Words We Speak

Notes

This song holds three true things at once and refuses to drop any of them. The first: friendship is a real gift, and you are not built to carry your life alone. The song will not let you spiritualize that away - it points at Paul, the great apostle, in a dungeon, calling out, Oh Timothy, come quickly. If Paul wanted a friend in the room, then wanting one is not weakness.

The second true thing is the grief. Friends do fade. Men I honored let me down - and the song makes me say the other half in the same breath: I've done the same to others. There are no perfect saints in this, only people, and people leave, and it cuts. The song does not pretend otherwise.

And the third: when every earthly friendship slips like sand, one Friend still stays. Not as a slogan to skip the grief with - the song earns that line by sitting in the dungeon first. Jesus stands unshaken when the others are gone. I will name one more, because the song does: my wife, the constant light and anchor, a voice that says, get up, keep running. That is grace too. Friends fade, and the Friend does not, and now and then He gives you one who stays. The song is gratitude and grief in one melody, which is the only honest way to sing about love.

Lyrics

[VERSE 1]
Oh what a gift it is - a friend in the Gospel,
We walk this road but we don’t walk it alone.
In all our battles, all our victories and failures,
It's grace that binds, it's love that makes us known.
No hero stands alone beneath the weight of calling,
We need each other when the night gets long -
And through the years I’ve learned with joy and sorrow...
I’m stronger when my brothers keep me strong.

[PRE-CHORUS]
But even Paul cried out inside the dungeon walls,
Betrayed, forsaken - but still he stood tall.

[CHORUS]
When the whole world fades and the lights go dim,
And every friend I trusted walks away again -
I call like Paul, “Oh Timothy, come quickly!”
‘Cause we’re not made to carry pain alone.
But even when I’m broken and the night cuts deep,
When no one shows - one Friend still stays with me.
My Rock, my steady One, my faithful King -
Jesus stands, unshaken, by my side.

[VERSE 2]
I’ve known dark rooms where sorrow kept me waiting,
I’ve seen betrayal burn like wildfire in my chest.
Men I honored let me down, I’ve done the same to others,
No perfect saints among us - only grace for every step.
But some stayed close through every storm that found me,
My brothers walking with me through the bitter wind -
And my wife, my constant light and anchor,
A voice that says, “Get up - keep running once again.”

[PRE-CHORUS]
When Paul was bleeding hope in chains and iron doors,
He whispered out for friendship - longing for something more.

[BRIDGE]
Cold nights, lost fights - I reach for the ones who care,
Across the states, across the years - I know they're there.
But if every voice falls silent and every ear grows cold -
My Savior holds me closer than them all.
He delivers me from evil, leads me through the fire -
A Friend unbroken, love that won’t retire.

[FINAL CHORUS]
When the whole world fades and the lights go dim,
When every earthly friendship slips like sand again -
I stand on Christ, my rock-built foundation,
My faithful Friend who never walks away.
Through chains or thunder, through betrayal’s sting -
He strengthens me, He lifts me up to sing.
My Rock, my steady One, my faithful King -
Jesus stands, unshaken, by my side.
