Notes

This song opens Sweet Release, and it opens it by reaching all the way down to the foundation. The book I have spent years writing is called A Thought in the Mind of God, and this is that book in five and a half minutes. One sentence. One thought. One mind. That holds the lot. Everything that exists is being thought by God right now - not a machine He wound up and walked away from, but a thought sustained, moment by moment, by His will.

I needed the album to start here, because every quiet, broken, personal song that follows only makes sense if this is true first. Not built like clockwork, left to spin, but held like breath that won't wear thin. If the universe is a thought, then I am a thought - and so is the cross. The cross was thought before the tree. The blood was purposed before me. Not God's plan B. The Author writing history, with the Lamb slain before the world's first dark flag unfurled.

And here is the line I most wanted on the record, because it answers the charge people level at a doctrine this high. The sharpest truth I know produces not the coldest heart but the widest arms to show. A sovereignty this total does not make a man hard. It makes him tender, because he finally understands that he was never an accident or an afterthought - just a thought, held by love's eternal hand. One sentence. Thirty chapters. Zero contradictions. Love the answer.

Lyrics

[Intro]
One sentence
One thought
One mind
That holds the lot

[Verse 1]
Before the light
Before the frame
Before a single star had name
A mind was thinking
Whole and still
A thought sustained
By sovereign will

Not built like clockwork
Left to spin
But held like breath
That won't wear thin
The atom and the angel's wing
Both rest inside
The same one thing

[Pre-Chorus]
Not a machine
Not a design
But a thought
In a living mind

[Chorus]
A thought in the mind of God
Sustained by His will
Authored by His purpose
And the covenants hold me still

A thought in the mind of God
Not wound up and left to run
But held by the very hand
That holds the burning sun

[Verse 2]
The filmmaker
Sees every frame
The characters
Don't know His name
They feel the story
Frame by frame
But He has seen
The end the same

The cross was thought
Before the tree
The blood was purposed
Before me
The Lamb was slain
Before the world
Before the first
Dark flag unfurled

[Pre-Chorus]
Not permission
Not a plan B
But the Author
Writing history

[Chorus]
A thought in the mind of God
Sustained by His will
Authored by His purpose
And the covenants hold me still

A thought in the mind of God
Not wound up and left to run
But held by the very hand
That holds the burning sun

[Bridge]
And then the Author
Stepped inside
His own story
Lived and died

The mind that held
The universe
Took on flesh
And bore the curse

He rendered glory
Into bone
He walked the frames
He'd always known
He ate the fish
He wore the scars
The Author living
Past the bars

The rendering
Sustained His death
The thought kept thinking
Past His breath
The character died
The Author wrote
The loop held fast
The story spoke

[Final Chorus]
A thought in the mind of God
That's all I ever was
Not an accident or afterthought
But purposed just because

A thought in the mind of God
Before the world began
Held together not by contracts
But by love's eternal hand

A thought in the mind of God
The sharpest truth I know
Produces not the coldest heart
But the widest arms to show

[Outro]
One sentence
Thirty chapters
Zero contradictions
Love the answer

Everything that exists
Is a thought in His mind
Sustained by His will
And held
By covenants
Of love
