How can Christians identify a false prophet?

Answered in 1 source

Christians can identify a false prophet by testing their teachings against the Scriptures and assessing their confession of Christ.

In 1 John 4:1, believers are instructed to test the spirits to determine their authenticity. A true prophet will confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh and uphold the doctrines that align with the gospel of grace. False prophets may use familiar language but twist or distort the essential truths of Scripture. For instance, while they might speak of redemption or grace, they often add to the gospel or redefine terms to fit a works-based theology. Thus, examining the consistency of their teaching with biblical doctrine is essential. As Christians engage with various teachings, they must discern whether the message aligns with the undiluted gospel as revealed in Scripture.
