How can Christians respond to prolonged suffering?

Answered in 1 source

Christians are called to seek God in their afflictions and not refuse comfort from His Word (Psalm 77).

In times of prolonged suffering, Christians are encouraged to cry out to God, just as the psalmist did in Psalm 77. This cry reflects trust in God’s presence and ability to help us through our trials. Importantly, believers should not refuse to be comforted by the truths of Scripture and the assurances of God's love. Recognizing the balance between mourning and receiving comfort is essential; excessive grief can lead to spiritual idolatry. Instead, we should remember God's past mercies, seek Him for comfort, and remain open to the healing and support He offers.
