How can God be just and still cover our sins?

Answered in 1 source

God is just because He punished our sins through Christ, allowing Him to cover our sins without compromising His righteousness.

The question of how God can cover our sins while remaining just is answered through the lens of Christ's atoning sacrifice. God must punish sin, yet in 1 John 4:10, we learn that Christ was sent to be the propitiation for our sins. This means that Christ bore the judgment for our sins, and as a result, God can justly cover our iniquities. When Christ cried 'It is finished,' He fulfilled the requirement of justice on our behalf, thus allowing believers to stand before God free from condemnation.
