How can one be considered righteous to be a friend of God?

Answered in 1 source

One can be considered righteous to be a friend of God through the imputed righteousness of Christ.

Righteousness is a requirement for being in fellowship with God, as only those who are righteous can be His friends. However, the righteousness that qualifies believers to be friends of God is not their own; it is the righteousness of Christ that is imputed to them. James 2:23 indicates that 'Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness.' This means that the faith of Abraham, and likewise the faith of every believer, is counted as righteousness in the sight of God. Thus, through faith in Christ, who perfectly fulfilled the law, believers are deemed fit for communion with God and are accepted as His friends.
