How can we avoid falling into legalism?

Answered in 1 source

To avoid legalism, we must adhere to the truth that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone, not by our works.

Legalism arises when believers begin to add human works to the gospel of grace. As seen in Galatians 1:6-7, Paul cautions against turning away from the pure gospel to a distorted version that requires adherence to the law alongside faith. To resist legalism, Christians must continually remind themselves and others that the basis of our salvation is Christ’s work, not our performance. This is reflected in Hebrews 10:14, where it states that by one offering, He has perfected forever those who are sanctified. Engagement with the Word of God, diligent prayer, and fostering a community that emphasizes grace will help maintain a focus on Christ’s sufficiency, keeping us from the bondage of legalism.
