How can we comfort those who are mourning a loved one?

Answered in 1 source

True comfort comes from acknowledging reality and directing mourners to the hope found in Christ.

When comforting those who are mourning, it is crucial not to shy away from the reality of death. Empty platitudes that suggest the deceased is in a 'better place' without faith in Christ can mislead and offer false comfort. Instead, we should validate the pain of loss while gently guiding them toward the hope and assurance found in the gospel. We can share the promise that those who die in Christ will experience resurrection glory and be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). By recognizing the grievousness of their sorrow and pointing them to Jesus—the source of eternal comfort—we help them navigate their grief in a way that acknowledges their pain but also brings hope.
