How can we discern if we really know God?

Answered in 1 source

We can discern our knowledge of God through our obedience to His commandments and our love for others, as emphasized in 1 John 2:3-5.

The Apostle John provides a clear test of knowing God in 1 John 2:3-5. He asserts that we know we have come to know Him if we keep His commandments. This obedience is not merely about ritualistic adherence but a genuine commitment to live according to God's will, reflecting an inner transformation that accompanies true faith. Furthermore, a love for the brethren, as discussed in 1 John 3:14, further substantiates our relationship with God. If we do not exhibit love for others, we are deceiving ourselves about knowing God, indicating that truly knowing Him results in a transformative love that extends beyond mere acknowledgment to active care and compassion toward others.
