How can we distinguish between true fasting and hypocritical fasting?

Answered in 1 source

True fasting is done in secret for God, while hypocritical fasting seeks the approval of men.

Matthew 6:16-18 illustrates the distinction between true fasting and hypocritical fasting. True fasting is marked by sincerity and a genuine desire for God's presence, while hypocritical fasting is performed to gain accolades from others. Isaiah 58 further reveals that those who fast with pure intentions do so out of a heart that mourns over sin and seeks to serve others, not for self-glorification. Hypocritical fasting can involve pride and a focus on one's own actions rather than on God's mercy and grace. Believers are called to engage in a humble fast that reflects a heart turned towards God instead of a show of religiosity for others to see.
