How did Jesus experience agony on the cross?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus experienced both physical and, more profoundly, emotional and spiritual agony on the cross as He bore the sins of humanity.

While the physical suffering of Jesus is well-documented—including the trauma of crucifixion—the greater agony lay in His spiritual torment. The scriptures portray Him as a 'man of sorrows', acquainted with grief, which highlights not only His physical pain but also the anguish stemming from bearing the totality of human sin. This agony was intensified by the felt absence of God’s presence and mercy, which Jesus expressed during His crucifixion. Therefore, His suffering encompassed a profound mental and spiritual burden far exceeding mere physical pain.
