How do free will and captivity relate to salvation?

Answered in 1 source

In Reformed theology, true freedom is found in Christ, as humanity is born captive to sin and unable to choose righteousness.

According to Reformed theology, as articulated in Luke 4:18, humanity is inherently captive to sin and cannot achieve freedom on their own. The concept of free will is often misunderstood; while people act according to their desires, those desires are shaped by a sinful nature, making true choice impossible without divine intervention. The gospel offers deliverance to those who recognize their captivity, as salvation is not about making a choice but about being set free by God's grace. Ephesians 2:1-5 illustrates this by affirming that we were dead in our sins, yet God, in His mercy, made us alive in Christ. This highlights that freedom in Christ comes from His grace, effectively liberating us from our sinful natures.
