How do we know Apollos' understanding of baptism was incomplete?

Answered in 1 source

Apollos knew only the baptism of John, lacking the understanding of Christ's redemptive work.

In Acts 18:25, we learn that Apollos was 'instructed in the way of the Lord' but 'knew only the baptism of John.' This highlights that his knowledge was limited to the acknowledgment of sin without the full revelation of Christ’s atoning sacrifice. While he effectively preached the law and spoke about the need for repentance, he lacked an understanding of the fulfillment of those truths in Jesus Christ. This deficiency was significant, as the purpose of baptism is not merely to recognize guilt but to point to the hope found in Christ, which Apollos had not yet comprehended. It was Aquila and Priscilla who graciously expounded to him 'the way of God more perfectly' (Acts 18:26).
