How do we know believers receive the Holy Spirit?

Answered in 1 source

Believers receive the Holy Spirit as a gift from God upon their faith in Jesus Christ.

The reception of the Holy Spirit is closely linked with true faith in Jesus Christ. In Acts 19:2, Paul asks if the disciples had received the Holy Spirit since they believed. This indicates that the Holy Spirit is a gift to all who genuinely believe in Christ, fulfilling the promise that believers would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them (Acts 1:8). In the Old Testament, the Spirit's presence often empowered God's prophets and faithful individuals, but in the New Testament, the promised Holy Spirit indwells believers, uniting them with Christ and empowering them for service (Ephesians 1:13-14). The apostolic laying on of hands in Acts 19 shows God's affirmation of these believers as they were empowered by the Holy Spirit to go forth with the gospel.
