How do we know Christ is equal with God?

Answered in 2 sources

Christ's claims, including His ability to work on the Sabbath and raise the dead, affirm His equality with God.

In John 5:17, Jesus asserts, 'My Father worketh hitherto, and I work,' which illustrates His divine authority and equality with God. The Jews understood this claim, leading them to seek to kill Him because He not only performed miracles on the Sabbath but also referred to God as His Father, thus making Himself equal with God (John 5:18). Jesus’ nature as the Son of God is further established in His role as the Redeemer; only God can save humanity from sin. The claim of Christ's divinity is central to the Gospel message: if He is not God, He cannot provide the salvation needed for humanity's sinfulness.
