How do we know Christ is the rock mentioned in Exodus?

Answered in 2 sources

Exodus explicitly states that the rock was to provide water, which Paul identifies as Christ in the New Testament.

In Exodus 17, God instructs Moses to strike the rock to provide life-sustaining water for the Israelites. This physical act serves as a prefigurement of the spiritual reality fulfilled in Christ. The Apostle Paul later asserts that the rock referred to in Exodus was indeed Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). By establishing this connection, Scripture teaches us that Christ is the source of life—the spiritual water needed to quench the thirst of our souls. The striking of the rock symbolizes Christ being smitten for our sins—through His affliction, we receive not just physical sustenance but eternal spiritual life.
